Dr. Diatchenko holds the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Human Pain Genetics, and she has made significant contributions to our understanding of how human genetic variability influences pain sensitivity and chronic pain states. Her work incorporates molecular, genetic, and psychological methods, and one of the primary goals of her research is to develop individualized treatments for pain. Dr. Diatchenko will be giving her talk on Monday, March 13th, at 12:00 pm in Theatre B. She is also available for one-on-one meetings during the day, including a breakfast meeting at 8 am. In fact, in mouse models the loss of dendritic spines and reduction in neurite outgrowth is one of the earliest pathological changes observed in vivo. However, the underlying mechanisms that regulate these processes remain elusive. By harnessing laser capture microdissection to specifically isolate neuronal cell bodies from the hippocampus we were able to identify genes and miRNAs miRs) that are induced during preclinical prion disease. A functional genomics approach in primary hippocampal neurons suggests that these miRs regulate degeneration of neurites in these cells. BIO: The primary interests of my group relate to defining how the absence of either methyl DNA binding factor MeCP2, or more recently CDKL5, affects normal brain function and/or alters the normal progression of brain development, and to identifying strategies that can be used to correct the observed alterations. Our work encompasses generating novel transgenic mouse lines that can be used to address questions relating to our focus, to testing novel pharmacological agents in established models of Rett syndrome as part of translational efforts. We are well positioned to assess therapeutically meaningful endpoints for the translational studies, and have the skills needed to identify key deficits that can then be subsequently targeted. It is our intention to identify novel strategies that can someday be employed to treat patients with Rett syndrome, with the ultimate goal being condition correction. Recent advances in MRI acquisition, analysis, and applications BIO: Chase Figley is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiology at the University of Manitoba and a Principal Investigator within the Neurosci-ence Research Program at the Kleysen Institute for Advanced Medicine. In addition, he also holds adjunct appoint-ments in Biomedical Engineering (University of Manitoba), Diagnostic Imaging (Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre), and the Department of Psycho-logical & Brain Sciences (Johns Hopkins University). Before moving to Winnipeg in September 2013, he completed a BSc (Honors) in Chemistry at the University of Saskatchewan (2001-2005), a PhD in Neuroscience at Queen's University (2005-2010), and a CIHR-sponsored Postdoctoral Fellowship at Johns Hopkins University (2010-2013). The ongoing research in his lab is primarily focused on developing and applying advanced neuroimaging methods - e.g., functional MRI (fMRI), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), myelin water imaging (MWI), and voxel based morphometry (VBM) - to study brain structure and function in both healthy and clinical populations. ABSTRACT: Despite major advances in our ability to characterize white matter microstructure with novel acquisition methods like diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and Myelin Water Imaging (MWI), these improvements have not yet translated into better diagnostic or prognostic capabilities in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) or other white matter disorders. In other words, more sophisticated data acquisition methods alone have not overcome the well-known "clinico-radiological paradox" (i.e., where imaging biomarkers such as lesion count, lesion volume, etc. do not accurately or reliably predict patients' clinical outcomes). Fortunately, our knowledge about how the brain is organized into large-scale functional networks offers a number of clues about how these problems might be dealt with using more sophisticated data analysis approaches. In this talk, I will briefly discuss the organization and topology of these networks in order to suggest that the locations of white matter lesions - as opposed to the total number or overall volume, per se - are likely what underlie specific functional deficits. I will then proceed to describe two new data analysis approaches that my lab has been working on to: 1) ascribe local white matter changes to specific functional brain networks, and 2) detect and measure local white matter changes along white matter tracts. Principal Investigator, Neuroscience Research Program, Kleysen Institute for Advanced Medicine, Health Sciences Centre TOPIC: "Molecular mechanisms of neuronal synapse development" The Siddiqui laboratory is interested in learning how nerve cell connections known as "synapses" form and function in the developing and adult brain. Synapses are the fundamental units for information processing in the brain. Evidence from genetic studies, animal models and post-mortem human tissue indicate impairment of synapse development and synaptic dysfunction in neuropsychiatric disorders such as autism and schizophrenia. Synapses undergo morphological and functional changes in response to neural activity, a phenomenon known as plasticity. These experience-dependent plastic changes at synapses are critical for cognitive processes including learning and memory. Our work focusses on the roles of cell adhesion and scaffolding molecules in the development, maintenance and plasticity of synapses and how these processes can be regulated in health and disease. We are particularly interested in understanding how specific neural circuits essential for learning and memory form and function in the brain. To address our questions, we combine multiple interdisciplinary methods ranging from biochemical and biophysical approaches to cellular, molecular and genetic studies, particularly regional and temporal manipulation of synaptic genes in mice brains. I then worked as a Lecturer in the same university for two years before moving to Canada in 2008. Then, I received an MSc in biophysics from Memorial University of Newfoundland before pursuing my PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Alberta. In my PhD I worked on developing quantitative MRI transverse relaxometry methods and applications towards Multiple Sclerosis. In January 2016, I moved to Winnipeg as a Staff Scientist & Brain Canada Platform Grant Coordinator at the University of Manitoba. By night she is a violinist and fiddler. After her undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Calgary and her neurology residency at University of Ottawa, Dr. Sim completed a post-doctoral fellowship in prion disease research at Rocky Mountain Laboratories, NIH, Montana, under the supervision of Dr. Byron Caughey. She joined the University of Alberta Division of Neurology in 2009 and was promoted to associate professor with tenure in July, 2016. In her research lab, Dr. Sim grows prion-infected brain slices in a dish in order to ask: 1) how a prion's size and shape can influence patterns of disease and risks of transmission; and 2) how targeting multiple steps along the disease pathway might produce more effective treatments. >From protein biochemistry to animal treatment experiments, her research publications have received international media attention. Date: October 14th, 2016 Time: 1-5pm Location: Apotex Centre, Room 071 (750 McDermot Avenue) Keynote Speaker: Dr. Ravi Menon, Canada Research Chair in Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Biosketch: Dr. Ravi Menon is Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Professor of Medical Biophysics, Medical Imaging, Physics and Psychiatry at the University of Western Ontario, where he is also a member of the Graduate Program in Neuroscience and the Graduate Program in Biomedical Engineering and Director of Western's Centre for Functional and Metabolic Mapping. He holds a Ph.D. in Medicine from the University of Alberta (1990), a M.Sc.(A) in Medical Physics from McGill University and a B.Sc. (Hons) in Physics from the University of British Columbia. He did his postdoctoral work in the world-renowned laboratory of Dr. Kamil Ugurbil at the University of Minnesota. He serves on numerous advisory boards, including 7 years on the Canada Gairdner Foundation and recently completed a term on the Science Advisory Council of the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research. He served for 7 years (the last 4 as Chair) on the Institute Advisory Board of the Institute for Neuroscience, Mental Health and Addiction of the CIHR. He is also one of Canada's two scientific advisory board members on the International Traumatic Brain Injury Research EU-NIH-CIHR consortium. He has held grants from a broad spectrum of agencies; CIHR, NSERC, NIH, McDonnell-Pew, Human Frontiers, ORDCF, CFI, OIT, ORF and an Ontario-NCE. He was in the first round of recipients of a Premiers Research Excellence Awrd, a Canada Research Chair and an Ontario Distinguished Researcher Award. He received a CIHR Foundation Award in 2016. His publication record in top-tier journals also reflects this broad scope, from fundamental imaging mechanism papers in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, to neuroscience papers in Science, Nature Neuroscience, Neuron and Current Biology or invited reviews in Trends and Current Opinion in Neurobiology. Dear students, A new course is running this September 2016. Registration opens on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 for all Fall Term graduate courses. Jen University of Manitoba Graduate Course Announcement (2016-2017) Human Brain Imaging Methods (IMED 7004) This is a 1.5 credit hour course held on the Bannatyne Campus (Sep. 8, 2016 - Oct. 27, 2016). It will be of particular interest to graduate students whose research is in neuroscience. This course will provide an overview of the in vivo brain imaging methods and how imaging data are analysed (e.g., MRI, PET, EEG). Students will have opportunity to perform hands-on practice in computer labs with sample data. The course has 2 components: 1. Lectures that will provide a systematic survey of different brain imaging modalities, and 2. Computer Laboratory sessions in which students will perform computer analysis using real brain imaging data. As Ben mentioned, our outreach activities have gone extremely well this year, and I have another opportunity to share with you. We received this email from the Massage Therapy Association of Manitoba on Tuesday through the MNN Speaker's Bureau. They are requesting speakers for their annual education conference, which will take place April 21-23, 2017. As you will see, they have mentioned some individuals by name, and we have already contacted them, but they have also requested other speakers for the topics that are listed below. This is a great opportunity to connect with the regulatory body of a growing allied health profession in our province, and I hope you will consider taking part. MTAM is a not-for-profit organization that provides the massage therapy profession with a self-regulating body to ensure the highest standards of massage training and practice, and provide protection for the public. One of the ways we accomplish this is by holding an annual Spring Education Conference. This conference provides a means for our members to achieve some of their mandatory continuing competency credits every year. There is a growing need for evidence based education as it relates to the field of manual therapy. Topics of interest to our members would be: * The placebo effect * Treatment of chronic pain * Neural and fascial relationships * Posture * Repetitive strain disorders * Acupuncture * Psychological effects of chronic pain and their impact on treatment * The role of manual therapy in the rehabilitation of spinal cord injuries I am interested in contacting Dr. Barbara Shay, Dr. Karen Ethans and Dr. Katinka Stecina to see if they have presentations that they could offer on any of these topics. I would also be appreciate if you could make recommendations of other speakers who could present information on the above topics. Our next conference is scheduled for April 21-23, 2017 in Winnipeg at the Victoria Inn and Conference Centre. We are looking for presenters who would be able to do 1-2 hour presentations on any of the 3 days of the conference. Our education sessions are held at various times between the hours of 8:30 am - 5:00 pm. Dr. Shay, Dr. Ethans and Dr. Stecina may contact me directly if they are interested in discussing the possibility of presenting at our conference. Dr. Gandy is an international expert in the metabolism of the sticky substance called amyloid that clogs the brain in patients with Alzheimer's. In 1989, Gandy and his team discovered the first drugs that could lower formation of amyloid. Dr. Gandy has written more than 150 original papers, chapters and reviews on this topic. Dr. Gandy has received continuous NIH funding for his research on amyloid metabolism since 1986. Dr. Gandy is a member of the Faculty of 1000 Biology and serves as a Consulting Editor for The Journal of Clinical Investigation. He also serves on the Editorial Advisory Boards for the journals Public Library of Science-Medicine (PLoSM), Neurodegenerative Diseases, and Current Alzheimer Research. Objective: to learn about the role of NF-kB signaling in normal memory / learning and also in dementia. Research Focus: The major focus of our laboratory is to understand the biological basis of memory and to also understand what happens to memory when it is impaired. To this end, we attempt to identify molecular signaling pathways and mechanisms that could be targeted with promising therapeutics for enhancing memory and for preventing and/or reversing memory impairments, in diseases or conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, head trauma, etc. Much of our work is centered on the signaling pathway involving the transcription factor, nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB), which is central to not only in inflammatory processes and immune system function, but also plays a central role in basic mechanisms of memory formation and recall. Why is this work important? -It provides a valuable platform for scientists to understand how brain cells and biochemical processes change at the molecular level during the formation of normal memory -By understanding transcriptional regulation during memory encoding, we can identify a gene (or genes) that are utilized during normal memory formation -Characterizing the biological basis of normal memory will lend great insight into treating age-related central nervous system diseases and/or conditions of brain injury that contribute to memory impairment -Our research could ultimately lead to the development of new drug targets and/or new interventions to enhance normal memory and to treat memory disorders and related neurodegenerative conditions About Dr. Benedict Albensi Dr. Albensi’s background is diverse where he has received training in both basic and clinical research. He has also worked in both academic and in industrial sectors on several drug discovery and drug development projects. For example, prior to PhD training, he worked at NPS Pharmaceuticals in Salt Lake City, UT, USA, investigating molecular structures obtained from natural products (e.g., spider venoms) for their potential application in treating CNS disorders. Dr. Albensi continued his academic training and received a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Utah’s Medical School in 1995, where he developed novel MRI methods for characterizing neonatal hypoxic-ischemic injury. Subsequently, he was awarded a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, USA (working with Drs. Faden and Pekar), where he further developed novel MRI methods for investigating TBI and brain cognition. Following this, he went on to work as a Postdoctoral Scholar with Dr. Mark Mattson, an internationally recognized leader in neurodegenerative research, at the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging – University of Kentucky. While working with Dr. Mattson and using electrophysiological methods, he published the ground breaking study that TNF and NF-kB play important roles in synaptic plasticity and memory (Albensi and Mattson, Synapse 2000). Subsequently, he joined the Clinical Research Department at Parke-Davis/Warner-Lambert in Ann Arbor, MI (Pfizer acquired PD-WL in 2000) to obtain additional experience in clinical trials. Following this clinical research training, he was appointed as Project Staff in the Department of Neurological Surgery – Cleveland Clinic Foundation and also as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Biology at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, where he conducted novel work on mechanisms of deep brain stimulation (DBS). He now has several appointments in Canada, which include serving as a Professor of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the University of Manitoba and as a Principal Investigator at St. Boniface Hospital Research. He is also a Core Member of the Biomedical Engineering Graduate Program at the University of Manitoba. In addition, he is the new Manitoba Dementia Research Chair and the Everett Endowment Fund Chair. He is also currently a Director of the Board for MitoCanada and the Movement Ctr. of Manitoba. NEUROSCIENCE TRAINEE LUNCH ALL NEUROSCIENCE STUDENTS, POST-DOC FELLOWS AND RESEARCH ASSOCIATED INVITED!! 1:00 P.M. | SR415 Kleysen Institute for Advanced Medicine Abstract: The Bowie Lab uses a combination of techniques to study ionotropic glutamate receptors (iGluRs), GABA-A receptors and more recently, Na+ channels. All ion-channel families are widespread in the vertebrate brain and fulfill many important roles in healthy individuals as well as being implicated in disease states associated with postnatal development (e.g. autism, schizophrenia), cerebral insult (e.g. stroke, epilepsy) and aging disorders (e.g. Alzheimer's disease, Parkinsonism). We are looking at iGluRs, GABA-A receptors and Na+ channels at two inter-related levels. In molecular terms, we are examining the events that occur when each ion-channel family is activated with the aim of developing novel therapeutic compounds. At the cellular level, we are studying the role that iGluRs, GABA-A receptors and Na+ channels fulfill in shaping the behaviour of neuronal circuits and how these processes may be corrected in disease states. The talk will focus on recent work on NMDA-type iGluRs and how it relates to deficits in Fragile-X syndrome. Bio: Dr. Derek Bowie is the Director of the FRQS-funded research group, GEPRO M, and has been a Professor at McGill University since 2002. He is the recipient of the Canada Research Chair award in Receptor Pharmacology and serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Physiology, Current Neuropharmacology and Channels. Dr. Bowie earned his Ph.D. at the University of London after completing his undergraduate degree at Strathclyde University in Scotland. He then carried out postdoctoral training in France (Université Louis Pasteur), Switzerland (University of Zurich) and the USA (National Institutes of Health) before holding a faculty position at Emory University in Atlanta.
