CPN Challenge Second Round - $700,000 grants available for Paralysis Research

---------------------------------------- Conquer Paralysis Now (CPN) Challenge - Funding available for Paralysis Research The aim of the CPN Challenge<https://www.omnicompete.com/cpnchallenge.html> is to accelerate the development of treatments for spinal cord injury (SCI) in order to provide significant improvements in patients' quality of life. Stage I of the Challenge Program was launched in 2014 to provide seed funding to a wide range of non-traditional approaches, and Stage I grants will recur annually. A total of 12 grants, each at least $50,000, are available cross the six categories in each round of Stage I. In all six awards, we are looking for unconventional, novel and disruptive concepts that have the potential for functional recovery in chronic humans and animals. The second round of Stage I grants is now open for applications. We're giving out 12 grants of at least $50,000 across 6 award categories for innovative and novel research related to Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) treatments. Part of a larger Challenge Program, these grants have a quick and straight forward application process, and we're particularly eager to hear from research(ers) in the following areas: - New Investigators (recently hired SCI researchers or established researchers who recently started working on SCI) - Collaborative Research (eg: nanotechnology and biochemistry) - Cross-Over Research from adjacent scientific fields that can be applied to the field of SCI - Translational Research from animal experiments towards human clinical trials - Reaching & Grasping (research to help restore reaching and grasping function for human SCI patients) - Out of the Box Ideas (risky, high potential research ideas) - Sharable Data (The Trial & Error Prize<http://conquerparalysisnow.org/RibbonLinks/TrialandError/Overview.aspx> is looking for research that can be shared so that the SCI community can learn from each other and not duplicate experiments) The application deadline is January 21st 2016, and we welcome all interest and any questions. ----------------------------------------------------------- Call for 2015 Spinal Cord Injury Research Projects Grant Applications The Manitoba Spinal Cord Injury Research Committee (MSCIRC) is now accepting applications for spinal cord injury research projects in Manitoba. Purpose Grants provided through this initiative aim to increase understanding of spinal cord function, reduce the disability related to spinal cord injury, increase functional capacity after spinal cord injury, reduce the incidence and effects of secondary complications after spinal cord injury, and increase quality of life and community integration after spinal cord injury. In addition, funding is available for projects that will clearly lead to reduced SCI-related health care costs and projects that have the potential to address SCI-related research and health delivery gaps in Manitoba. Eligibility Grant applications will only be considered from applicants conducting spinal cord injury research and who are appointed at accredited educational institutions, disability related organizations, research institutions or hospitals. In addition, Dr. Namaka is also cross-appointed as an Associate Professor in Rehab Medicine (Spinal Cord Injury) & Human Anatomy and Physiology in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority. Michael also is affiliated with Anesthesia Department of Medicine where he has an active clinical practice in the chronic pain clinic with Dr. Howard Intrater. Currently, Michael functions as clinician specialized in multiple sclerosis (MS) and chronic pain, with a recognized cellular expertise in both areas, through his professional designation as a neuro-immunologist. These dual professional designations have allowed Michael to bridge his cellular neuro-immunology research to his neurology based clinical practice. Michael heads a neuro-immunology research laboratory, which serves as the training center for several MD-Ph D; Ph D and Master's students. Since his appointment at the Faculty 13 years ago, Michael holds numerous research grants and has published 43 manuscripts, 2 book chapters, 1 editorial letter, 58 abstracts, and has performed 139 invited presentations world-wide. In addition, Dr. Namaka had 4 submitted and 4 accepted publications this year. Dr. Michael Namaka was awarded the prestigious international: "Commitment to Care Award for his innovative MS research and clinical neurology practice. In addition, Michael held the elected office of Immediate Past President of Association of Faculties of Pharmacy of Canada since May 2010. Currently, Dr. Namaka is the acting President of the Manitoba Multiple Sclerosis Research Network Organization (MMSRNO). Dr. Karen Ethans and Dr. Namaka are the original co-founders of this organization. Program Objectives: 1. Understand the role of the anatomical connection between the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and spinal cord (SC) in the molecular signaling involved in re-myelination and/or myelin repair; 2. Understand the homeostatic molecular signaling between cytokines, chemokines and neurotrophins that regulate re-myelination and/or myelin repair; 3. Understand the beneficial role of brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in regard to re-myelination and/or myelin repair; 4. Understand the upstream role of MeCP2 and its isoforms in the regulation (repression and activation) of the BDNF gene; 5. Understand the molecular mechanisms by which MeCP2E1 isoform represses BDNF expression to disrupt the homeostatic signaling equilibrium between cytokines, chemokines and neurotrophins to facilitate myelin damage; 6. Apply epigenetic interventional strategies to block MeCP2E1 repression of BDNF to promote re-myelination and/or myelin repair with corresponding improvements in neurological disability caused by an immune system mediated attack on CNS myelin. Outreach opportunity - West Broadway Youth Outreach

Hello everyone, We have been contacted by the West Broadway Youth Outreach, who are looking for a neuroscientist to participate in their Dreams Mentorship program. WBYO is a wonderful organization that provides academic and social support to children in the West Broadway neighbourhood. Many of these children are recent immigrants, and others come from disadvantaged backgrounds. There is a strong emphasis on academic achievement in all of their programs, and the students are rewarded for their achievements with opportunities such as the Dreams Mentorship program. Here is their website: http://www.westbroadwayyouthoutreach.com/dreams.html The Dreams Mentorship program gives students the opportunity to meet someone who is working in the student's "dream" job, which shows the child that their goals are attainable. They have a 10-year old boy who wants to become a neuroscientist, and I am hoping that one of you will step forward to serve as a mentor. Here are the critical details that you need to know: - This child is NOT going to be working your lab. - This is a one-time meeting. There is NO long-term commitment or project involved. - The meeting lasts about 2 hours and can be scheduled at a time that is convenient for you (it can be over lunch, dinner, etc). Part of this goal will be met by using social media. MNN recently began using Twitter and Instagram to communicate research and outreach events, accomplishments, news and more. Neuroscience outreach - Brain Bee

Dear colleagues, In this final outreach email, I would like to give you an update on the Winnipeg Brain Bee. Our inaugural Bee was held in March and was a tremendous success! The winner was Rachel Gador, a Grade 11 student from River East Collegiate, who went on to compete at the Canadian National Brain Bee in Hamilton. Next year's Brain Bee will be held March 12, 2016, and I will be sending a notice to local teachers next week. To help promote the competition, I have created a new website which includes photos from this year's event and information for prospective competitors: http://brainbee.ca/local-bees/winnipeg/ To help spread the word further, I encourage all of you to share this link with the high school students and teachers in your lives. Neuroscience outreach - CBC radio programs

Dear colleagues, In this email, I would like to tell you about an exciting new platform for sharing your research with the public. Jean-Eric Ghia has been in contact with Ici-Radio Canada Première to create French-language radio segments that will talk about new research findings and papers that have been produced at Manitoba universities. These biweekly segments will be 6-8 minutes long and they will air Tuesdays at 7:45 am on the Radio Canada morning show Le 6-9. Jean-Eric presents these segments in conjunction with Dr. Fernand Saurette of Université de Saint-Boniface, who focuses on work being done in the natural sciences. The first segment aired on September 22nd, and roughly 20 more segments are currently planned. Update - Art of Neuroscience program

Dear colleagues, The second of our outreach programs that has made great strides in the last few months is our collaboration with the Manitoba Craft Council. I am pleased to inform you that this program recently received a $6,000 grant from the Manitoba Arts Council, one of the major arts funding agencies in the province. This is the maximum amount awarded by the Arts Council, and the funds will be used to support the artists in their work and to develop exhibitions featuring the works that are produced. The first phase of the collaboration has been very successful and I would like to share some preliminary images of the works that have been created. The first is the result of the collaboration between Kris Cowley and artist Heather Komus. It is a mixed media piece representing the degenerative process of Alzheimer's disease. The other works shown have been produced through the partnership of Mike Jackson and artist Lesley Nakonechny. This collaboration has produced some intensely personal and powerful pieces, including the one titled, "Alzheimer's Portrait 2: Father Jackson", which uses linocut to depict Mike's father and his struggle with Alzheimer's. After visiting Mike's lab, Lesley was also inspired to take photographs of "Neurons in Nature", and she placed these photos in petri dishes to create the lightbox that you see. Feeling inspired? You can take part in the next phase of the program! We will be reviewing the next round of artist applications in early October, so if you are interested in participating, please send me an email and we will try to match you. OPEN VOLUNTEER POSITION - Communications/Social Media Director The Manitoba Neuroscience Network has created volunteer leadership positions over the past few years to fuel growth and success that a single person could not achieve alone. We have Directors of Outreach (Sari Hannila) and Seminars (Eftekhar Eftekharpour), as well as many volunteers for outreach events and annual meeting program chairs - Drs. Kirouac (2012/13), Fernyhough (2014), Karimi (2015) and Albensi (2016). Volunteers provide substantial benefits to their colleagues and discipline by controlling a manageable portfolio that they can take ownership of, develop into a source of pride and use as evidence of service in their own careers. As you know, we are developing a comprehensive website to feature our research, training, outreach, facilities, events and more. Establishment of a strong visual identity and a framework for the new website is almost complete, and we are working on developing strong content. A major part of communicating our content and having current, continual interaction with other scientists, potential recruits and the public, is having a strong social media presence. Ideally, we will use Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin, at least, to communicate alongside our new website. We're looking for someone to develop an active presence for MNN on these and potentially other social media platforms. Not everyone will be well-suited for this type of position but we're hoping to find just one person among us who is. There have been several recent developments regarding our neuroscience outreach activities, and I will be telling you about those in the coming weeks. Specifically, they are looking for someone to speak on how improving cognitive function ("keeping the brain sharp" in their words) can aid recovery from mental illness. You are invited to a talk by Dr. Demitre Serletis, MD, PhD, FRCSC, FAANS, a Neurosurgeon visiting from Little Rock, Arkansas (University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences). Dr. Serletis' talk is titled "Epilepsy Surgery in the 21st Century". Friday, July 17. 12:00-13:00. Theatre B, Basic Medical Sciences Building. Dr. Serletis completed his MD at the University of Calgary in 2003. He went on to complete a PhD (Physiology and Biomedical Engineering) and Neurosurgery residency at the University of Toronto. Subsequently, he completed the Pediatric/Adult Epilepsy Surgery Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic, a unique and prestigious fellowship that provides highly specialized hypothesis-based epilepsy and high volume surgical training. Dr. Serletis currently holds an academic position at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, and established and now directs Arkansas' only comprehensive Epilepsy Surgery Program. He has also founded and grown the states' only non-profit organization for epilepsy patients and their families. In addition to epilepsy, Dr. Serletis' clinical interests are pediatric neurosurgery, functional neurosurgery, and neuro-oncology. As a surgeon-scientist, he has unique research interests in epilepsy neurodynamics and electrophysiology, and has published numerous papers in this field. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Serletis. UNIVERSITY OF WINNIPEG PSYCHOLOGY &NEUROSCIENCE TALK THURSDAY 18 JUNE 2015 1:30-3:00 4TH FLOOR LOCKHART (4L28) TRAVIS TODD DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGICAL AND BRAIN SCIENCE DARTMOUTH COLLEGE TOPIC: BEHAVIOURAL AND NEUROBIOLOGICAL MECHANISMS OF EXTINCTION IN PAVLOVIAN AND INSTRUMENTAL LEARNING Abstract: Pavlovian and instrumental learning are two fundamental forms of learning that contribute to behavior in a variety of ways, in both human and non-human animals. In Pavlovian extinction, repeated presentation of a signal without its reinforcer weakens behavior evoked by the signal; in instrumental extinction, repeated occurrence of a voluntary action without its reinforcer weakens the strength of the actions. In both cases, contemporary research at both the behavioural and neural levels of analysis has been guided by a set of extinction principles that were first generated by research conducted at the behavioral level. Both Pavlovian and instrumental extinction are at least partly controlled by a form of context-specific inhibitory learning, and both involve a neural circuit including the hippocampus and the medial prefrontal cortex. Dr. Travis Todd graduated from the University of Winnipeg where he worked in the Doug Williams lab. He subsequently completed a PhD with Mark Bouton at the University of Vermont. Travis won a National Research Service Award from the National Institute of Mental Health and is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in the David Bucci lab at Dartmouth College. SPEAKER: Dr. Gilbert Kirouac Dr. Gilbert Kirouac Professor - Departments of Oral Biology and Psychiatry Colleges of Dentistry and Medicine Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba Topic: The paraventricular nucleus of the midline thalamus and emotions Brief Biosketch: Dr. Kirouac received a B.A. in Psychology and M.Sc. and Ph.D. (Anatomy) at the University of Manitoba. This was followed by postdoctoral training in the Departments of Physiology at the University of Western Ontario and the University of Calgary. Prior to joining the University of Manitoba in 2006, Dr. Kirouac was an Associate Professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Our focus is in the area of behavioral neurosciences as it relates to emotions and motivation. The paraventricular nucleus of the midline thalamus (PVT) is of special interest because it is connected to areas of the brain which play a key role in the regulation of emotions. The PVT contains a high concentration of neuropeptides linked to arousal and stress. Consequently, we are interested in determining how these neuropeptides act at the PVT to influence emotional behavior. Our laboratory has established a role for the PVT in the regulation of fear and anxiety. For example, recent research in our laboratory showed that activation of the PVT with peptides called orexins produces negative emotions (fear and anxiety) in rats. We also showed that blocking of orexin receptors in the PVT attenuates the anxiety produced by previously exposing rats to an intense stressor (animal model of PTSD). Ongoing research is directed at providing more evidence for a PVT mediated emotional arousal system, discovery of the neural mechanism involved, and determining the role of the orexins and the PVT in conditions like generalized anxiety and PTSD. Marco Prado, a Brazilian-born Canadian neuroscientist, has a strong interest in understanding how molecular and cellular changes in neurodegenerative diseases cause cognitive failure. After finishing his PhD and post-doctoral fellowship in 1994, he directed a research laboratory in Brazil until 2008, when he was recruited as a full professor by the University of Western Ontario and as a scientist at the Robarts Research Institute. Marco was recognized as a Guggenheim fellow by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in 2004 and received a Faculty Scholar Award from the University of Western Ontario (2013-2014). In collaboration with his life partner, Vania Prado, he has generated novel genetically-modified mice to model neurochemical deficits in dementia, with particular focus on Alzheimer's disease. These mice have allowed for new discoveries on mechanisms of cognitive failure using state-of-the art touchscreen technology to assess mouse cognition. One of his major interests is to develop new treatments for Alzheimer's disease. Other interests in the Prado laboratory span prion diseases and their interface with Alzheimer's disease and stroke. International PhD study opportunity at SCRC and Nencki Institute June 2015

An opportunity for international PhD study in neuroscience at the Spinal Cord Research Centre (SCRC) and the Nencki Institute (Warsaw, Poland) is available and supported by the Bio4Med: International PhD Program in Biological Bases of Human Diseases. This is a collaborative research project involving Dr. Urszula Slawinska of the Nencki Institute and Dr. Larry M. Jordan at the SCRC, Winnipeg, Canada. This is an attractive program, because the monthly stipend is high compared to other programs (1700Euro monthly for 4 years), and it offers opportunities for work both in Warsaw and in Winnipeg. The project is entitled: Studies on afferents crucial for locomotor recovery after spinal cord injury. In our project we want to clarify the brainstem structures involved in production of locomotion from the MLR, and the interaction of this descending system with intraspinal locomotor neurons and peripheral afferents. The neural system crucial for locomotor recovery after spinal cord injury is under the control of a serotonergic descending pathway, an intraspinal cholinergic propriospinal system, and input from peripheral afferents.Cutaneous afferents from the plantar surface of the paw of cats and rats are necessary for locomotion after spinal cord injury. The intraspinal cholinergic propriospinal system has the capacity to drastically reduce cutaneous input from the limb, thus interfering with locomotor recovery. The balance between these factors determines the success of recovery after injury. Understanding the detailed physiology of these systems is the major goal of this research program. Dear Researchers, I am an investigator with the Department of Immunology, and I wanted to inquire whether there was interest from neuroscience network members for a quantitative 4D analysis software that will allow for the tracking and characterization of a number of cellular parameters in a 3D environment. The program is called Imaris, and I am linking to their website the various modules that might be interesting to your experimental needs. http://www.bitplane.com/learning I have used this program for the last 5 years, and find their technical support to be fantastic. Many of their analysis modules are geared towards neuroscientists, where analysis of neurons and glial cells are challenging with other programs. I am setting up a webinar with the company for a quick demonstration of the various things the program can do. It will be a remote webinar, so anyone can link up to the site and listen in from their own computers. SPEAKER: Dr. Gilbert Kirouac Dr. Gilbert Kirouac Professor - Departments of Oral Biology and Psychiatry Colleges of Dentistry and Medicine Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba Topic: The paraventricular nucleus of the midline thalamus and emotions Brief Biosketch: Dr. Kirouac received a B.A. in Psychology and M.Sc. and Ph.D. (Anatomy) at the University of Manitoba. This was followed by postdoctoral training in the Departments of Physiology at the University of Western Ontario and the University of Calgary. Prior to joining the University of Manitoba in 2006, Dr. Kirouac was an Associate Professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Our focus is in the area of behavioral neurosciences as it relates to emotions and motivation. The paraventricular nucleus of the midline thalamus (PVT) is of special interest because it is connected to areas of the brain which play a key role in the regulation of emotions. The PVT contains a high concentration of neuropeptides linked to arousal and stress. Consequently, we are interested in determining how these neuropeptides act at the PVT to influence emotional behavior. Our laboratory has established a role for the PVT in the regulation of fear and anxiety. For example, recent research in our laboratory showed that activation of the PVT with peptides called orexins produces negative emotions (fear and anxiety) in rats. We also showed that blocking of orexin receptors in the PVT attenuates the anxiety produced by previously exposing rats to an intense stressor (animal model of PTSD). Ongoing research is directed at providing more evidence for a PVT mediated emotional arousal system, discovery of the neural mechanism involved, and determining the role of the orexins and the PVT in conditions like generalized anxiety and PTSD. Surgery and Medical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases (cross-appointed), University of Manitoba; Honorary Professor, Shantou University Medical College, Guangdong Province, China Topic: High Mobility Group A2 (HMGA2): Amphetamine for Cancer Two major challenges in the research on high grade glioblastoma (GB) are their cell plasticity resulting in a high degree of tumor heterogeneity and the ability of GB cells to colonize the entire brain. As a consequence and despite decades of therapeutic trials, GB remains an incurable fatal disease. I am interested in discovering cellular defense mechanisms GB tumors mount to successfully neutralize therapeutic intervention. As part of a larger team of basic and clinical scientists, I utilize human cell and animal models to better understand the molecular and signaling pathways and identify weaknesses in the armor of GB that can be exploited therapeutically. Stem cell factor High Mobility Group A2 (HMGA2) is one of a few promising targets currently under investigation in my lab. We and others showed that HMGA2 has key roles in stem cell renewal, chemoresistance, proliferation and tissue invasion. The ultimate goal of my research is to develop targeted therapeutic strategies to aid the development of new efficacious treatments that ideally cure or at least extend the quality of life of patients with GB. Please circulate! 2015 Nick Shepel Student Travel Award Competition deadline: Friday May 15, 2015 The Nick Shepel Student Travel Award was established by the Division of Neurodegenerative Disorders, St. Boniface Hospital Research to honor Nick Shepel who was an outstanding researcher, friend and leader. Nick was a true inspiration to his lab partners and brought fire, humor, and a desire to always do better. His insistence to always try better will have a permanent effect on his lab mates. Nick led by example and taught that detailed preparation and execution of experiments ensured reliable results. Purpose: The purpose of this fund shall be to recognize a young investigator (graduate student within the College of Medicine - University of Manitoba) by providing an annual award(s) (up to $1,000 max) to support travel costs associated with the applicant's attendance at a future national/international conference where the applicant is presenting a poster or oral presentation. Eligibility: At the time of application, students must be registered in the College of Medicine at the University of Manitoba. 1. "Registered" includes being accepted by the major department of study, admitted by the Faculty of Graduate Studies, or eligible to register in the Faculty of Graduate Studies. 2. A student admitted under the "Provisional Status" may not receive the award during the provisional period. 3. Amount of award(s) may vary each year (minimum value - $400). 4.
