Please circulate! 2015 Nick Shepel Student Travel Award Competition deadline: Friday May 15, 2015 The Nick Shepel Student Travel Award was established by the Division of Neurodegenerative Disorders, St. Boniface Hospital Research to honor Nick Shepel who was an outstanding researcher, friend and leader. Nick was a true inspiration to his lab partners and brought fire, humor, and a desire to always do better. His insistence to always try better will have a permanent effect on his lab mates. Nick led by example and taught that detailed preparation and execution of experiments ensured reliable results. Purpose: The purpose of this fund shall be to recognize a young investigator (graduate student within the Faculty of Medicine - University of Manitoba) by providing an annual award(s) (up to $1,000 max) to support travel costs associated with the applicant's attendance at a future national/international conference where the applicant is presenting a poster or oral presentation. Eligibility: At the time of application, students must be registered in the College of Medicine at the University of Manitoba. 1. "Registered" includes being accepted by the major department of study, admitted by the Faculty of Graduate Studies, or eligible to register in the Faculty of Graduate Studies. 2. A student admitted under the "Provisional Status" may not receive the award during the provisional period. 3. Amount of award(s) may vary each year (minimum value - $400). 4. Gore, Ph.D., holds the Hertha Ramsey Cress Chair in Medicine and is a University Professor of Radiology and Radiological Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Physics and Astronomy, and Molecular Physiology and Biophysics, at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Gore obtained his Ph.D. in Physics at the University of London in the UK and also holds a degree in Law. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM), the American Physical Society and the Institute of Physics (UK). In 2004 Dr. Gore was awarded the Gold Medal of the ISMRM for his contributions to the field of magnetic resonance imaging. He is also a Distinguished Investigator of the Academy of Radiology Research. He is editor-in-chief of the journal Magnetic Resonance Imaging and currently serves as a member of the National Advisory Council on Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering for NIBIB. Manitoba Neuroscience Network 5th Scientific Meeting | June 12th, 2015 What: Manitoba Neuroscience Network 5th Scientific Meeting Date: Friday, June 12th, 2015 Location: Radisson Hotel Winnipeg Downtown The Winnipeg Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience (WCSN) actively promotes neuroscience research, education and outreach in Manitoba. The Manitoba Neuroscience network represents the cornerstone approach of the WCSN to encourage communication, cooperation and collaboration among Manitoba's broad basic and clinical neuroscience research community. Since 2010, the Manitoba Neuroscience Network held annual scientific meetings of neuroscience faculty and trainees. These gatherings have been received with tremendous enthusiasm, attracting around 150 attendees each year. We are pleased to build on this success by holding a sixth annual meeting in 2015. In 2015, the meeting content will centre on, synaptic plasticity, neural networks, epigenetic and genetic modeling of CNS disorders, and neural repair and regeneration. There will be participation by principal investigators, trainees and invited speakers. There will also be a poster competition for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. The 2015 meeting program is chaired by Dr. Soheila Karimi, with participation from junior, senior, basic science and clinical faculty. Thank you to all speakers, session chairs and poster judges. Surgery and Medical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases (cross-appointed), University of Manitoba; Honorary Professor, Shantou University Medical College, Guangdong Province, China Topic: High Mobility Group A2 (HMGA2): Amphetamine for Cancer Two major challenges in the research on high grade glioblastoma (GB) are their cell plasticity resulting in a high degree of tumor heterogeneity and the ability of GB cells to colonize the entire brain. As a consequence and despite decades of therapeutic trials, GB remains an incurable fatal disease. I am interested in discovering cellular defense mechanisms GB tumors mount to successfully neutralize therapeutic intervention. As part of a larger team of basic and clinical scientists, I utilize human cell and animal models to better understand the molecular and signaling pathways and identify weaknesses in the armor of GB that can be exploited therapeutically. Stem cell factor High Mobility Group A2 (HMGA2) is one of a few promising targets currently under investigation in my lab. We and others showed that HMGA2 has key roles in stem cell renewal, chemoresistance, proliferation and tissue invasion. The ultimate goal of my research is to develop targeted therapeutic strategies to aid the development of new efficacious treatments that ideally cure or at least extend the quality of life of patients with GB. My research interests are in understanding the cellular factors that control blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability under both normal and pathophysiological conditions. Utilizing both cell culture and whole animal models, my laboratory examines various transport processes within the brain microvessel endothelial cells for moving drugs and solutes into and out of the brain. One area of research interest is in drug efflux transporter localization and expression in the brain endothelial cells, and how modulation of transporter activity influences drug delivery to the brain. My laboratory is also actively pursuing alternative routes for drug delivery across the BBB including transient modulation of BBB permeability and the use of magnetic nanoparticles for targeted delivery to the brain. FIRST BRAIN BEE

Brain Awareness Week is now in the books for 2015. Last week the Winnipeg Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience hosted a successful visit from a Canada Excellence Research Chair and presented a very well-received and well-attended Café Scientifique on concussion/brain injury. On Saturday, we finished the week by presenting the first ever Manitoba Brain Bee. Manitoba high school students performed well and a winner was declared. We are excited to grow this event over the next several years as a tool for grass-roots neuroscience outreach in our local communities. This event included talks and demonstrations and was a challenge to organize and execute. RBC - Brain Canada Research Partnership in Mental Health Services for Children and Youth Multi-Investigator Research Initiative (MIRI) Request for Applications (RFA) Brain Canada, in partnership with the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), is pleased to announce a research partnership in mental health services for children and youth, through the Brain Canada Multi-Investigator Research Initiative (MIRI) program. The RBC – Brain Canada Research Partnership will support a multi-investigator three-year research project focused on improved delivery of mental health services through the identification and validation of innovative interventions and practices that are cost-effective, and delivered at the right place and time to support both affected individuals and their families. Notably, the funded project will involve a continuing collaboration between researchers, policy-makers, service providers, and those affected by child and youth mental health issues. In this regard, DNA damage repair pathways are an ideal target; first, to minimize tumour cell therapeutic resistance and second, to specifically kill cancer cells by lowering the radio- and chemotherapeutic threshold of tumour cell genotoxicity by inhibiting redundant DNA repair pathways. We use genetic and biochemical approaches: 1. to determine how DNA repair pathways co-ordinately affect neurodevelopment, 2. to investigate how DNA repair deficiency contributes to neurodegeneration and, 3. to selectively target DNA repair pathways in neural/brain tumour cell and animal lines to enhance cellular sensitization to radio- and chemotherapeutic drugs. My work will serve to expand our knowledge of DNA repair neurobiology and translate this data into tangible next-generation cancer treatment paradigms that augment therapeutic efficacy with improved patient quality-of-life. This message is sent on behalf of Dr. Soheila Karimi, the chair of 2015 MNN Scientific Meeting Dear Neuroscience community, Since 2010, the Manitoba Neuroscience Network held annual scientific meetings of neuroscience faculty and trainees. These gatherings have been received with tremendous enthusiasm, attracting around 150 attendees each year. We are pleased to build on this success by holding a 5th annual meeting in 2015. The Winnipeg Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience (WCSN), under the leadership of Dr. Chris Anderson, actively promotes neuroscience research, education and outreach in Manitoba. The Manitoba Neuroscience network represents the cornerstone approach of the WCSN to encourage communication, cooperation and collaboration among Manitoba's broad basic and clinical neuroscience research community. In 2015, the meeting content will center on, synaptic plasticity, neural networks, epigenetic and genetic modeling of CNS disorders, and neural repair and regeneration. There will be participation by Manitoba principal investigators and invited speakers. The objective of this joint funding program is to support research that is relevant to ALS and related neurological disorders, including primary lateral sclerosis, progressive muscular atrophy, and ALS/FTLD (ALS/frontotemporal lobar dementia). The ultimate goal of the ALS Society of Canada and Brain Canada (the Partners) is to prevent or cure these disorders, to slow their progression, and to improve the quality of life for those affected and their families. He then completed his PhD in Anatomical Sciences from the Department of Human Anatomy, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran. Prior to joining the University of Manitoba, Dr. Marzban was recruited as an assistant professor in the Medical School at the Tehran University of Medical Sciences. He joined Dr. R. Hawkes' laboratory as visiting scientist and subsequently he was recruited as an assistant professor (research) at the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy, University of Calgary. Dr. Marzban's research interests are to understand cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in cerebellar development, with a focus on neurodevelopmental disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. Mouse models with mutations in genes, such as ACP2 and SNCA, are used in his research. Dr. Marzban's research interests are focused on cerebellar development and understanding the cellular and molecular mechanism of the cerebellar neurodevelopmental disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. His research involves the cerebellum as a model system for studying the normal and abnormal development of the nervous system. Dr. Marzban believes that the temporal and spatial dynamics of cerebellar development are exquisitely controlled and as a model, this structure combines the simplicity of spinal cord development with the complexity of cerebral cortical formation. Mouse models with a spontaneous mutation in the Acp2 (lysosomal acid phosphatase 2) gene cause a neurodevelopmental disorder called naked-ataxic (nax). Dr. Marzban's group investigates the developmental roles of Acp2, SNCA, P75, autophagy and caspase signaling molecules in the cerebellum. His research program aims to understand the specific molecular mechanisms underlying cerebellar neurodevelopmental disorders and neurodegeneration to provide a foundation for development of therapeutic treatment targets and, ultimately, prevention of nervous system diseases. His goal is to develop strategies to regulate ion channel function for therapeutic intervention. Dr. Zamponi's scientific work has garnered dozens of national and international awards. He has also authored more than 215 papers in top tier scientific journals and has been invited to present at almost 200 scientific conferences around the world. In addition, his research on ion channel therapeutics has resulted in numerous patents.Dr. Zamponi served as Head of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology and is currently the Senior Associate Dean for research at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. In addition to being an AI-HS Scientist, he is the Canada Research Chair in Molecular Neurobiology and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Neuroscience outreach - meet the artists!

Hello everyone, Today, I met with Tammy Sutherland, the Programme Coordinator for the Manitoba Craft Council. We reviewed the applications for the Art of Neuroscience initiative and decided to present 8 applications to you so that you would have a wider range of options. We will gauge the amount of interest in each application and from there, choose 3-5 people for the pilot project. I already have some idea of where to match people based on the emails that received last week, but I invite everyone to look at the applications and make their interest known. The applications can be accessed through this Dropbox link (you can also access the artists' websites to see additional images): https://www.dropbox.com/sh/b29sxlfin3ao2b6/AABgdliAaRzXsCEG8x_dE1qDa?dl=0 As you will see, these artists do beautiful work, and in their letters, almost all of them describe how they have been impacted by neurological disease in some way. In fact, some of them have actually been diagnosed with neurological disorders such as essential tremor and Parkinson's disease, which gives them a particularly unique perspective. Two of the artists are from outside of Winnipeg. Lin Xu is an Assistant Professor at Brandon University, but Tammy has indicated that MCC funds would be made available to allow her to travel to Winnipeg, so the distance should not be a big factor. Her work is absolutely stunning - I highly recommend that you check it out! The other artist, Michelle Forsyth, is actually based in Toronto, and is an Associate Professor at OCAD University, one of the country's most prestigious art and design schools. She has been diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson's and is interested in incorporating her experiences into her work. Tammy has told me that she is a very highly regarded artist, and she works in a variety of media. While the distance could pose a bit of a barrier, we felt that this was such a unique opportunity that we should at least make you aware of it. Many of you are likely wondering about the time commitment, and Tammy and I discussed this today. In order to ensure that the process moves forward, we feel that the artist and the neuroscientist should meet for a minimum of 3 hours per month, for 3-6 months starting in January or February (ie. 9-18 hours total between now and next June). Hopefully you will find that to be reasonable. You could certainly meet more often than that if you want - it will be entirely up to the two of you. You can meet in person, Skype, talk on the phone, or exchange emails - again, the depth of your interaction is up to the two of you. Neuroscience outreach opportunities

Dear colleagues, As the year winds down, I am pleased to offer you two exciting opportunities to become involved with the outreach activities of the Winnipeg Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience. Art of Neuroscience - Collaboration with the Manitoba Craft Council The Council sent out a call for applications last month and received applications from 14 highly-accomplished artists who are interested in creating pieces based on neuroscience. Some of these artists have a personal connection to our field, as they have family members who are affected by neurological disorders, while others are interested from a purely aesthetic standpoint. As a first step, we will be selecting 5 artists for a pilot project, and based on their interests, we will match them with scientists who work in that area. If you are interested in participating, please send me an email, and we will do our best to match you. Even if it doesn't work out for the pilot project, we will probably be able to match you once the project expands. I will also send out profiles of the artists once we have selected them. Inaugural Winnipeg Brain Bee Second, I am pleased to announce that we will be hosting our Inaugural Winnipeg Brain Bee on March 21, 2015! For those of you who are not familiar with the Brain Bee, it is an annual neuroscience competition for high school students, which progresses to the national and international levels. Our participation brings us in line with chapters in other major cities such as Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver. We had a tremendous response this year, with 47 students registering! They include students from Henry G. Izatt Middle School, Arthur A. Leach School, River East Collegiate, Children of the Earth High School, and Sisler High School. This will be a large event, and its success will require a concerted, collective effort on our part. I am therefore looking for volunteers to serve in the areas listed below. All members, especially students and post-docs, are welcome to take part! Other roles will likely emerge as the process moves forward. Competition - judging, scoring, question preparation Registration Guides (to escort groups around the Bannatyne campus) Hosting of demonstrations/lab tours Signage and printing Media/photography Through their response to these events, our community has stepped forward in a big way to say that they are interested in what we do. Brief Biosketch: Michael Jackson joined the Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics at the University of Manitoba in April 2013 as an Assistant Professor. His laboratory is located in the newly constructed Neurosciences research laboratories in the Kleysen Institute for Advanced Medicine (KIAM). Dr. Jackson obtained his PhD from McGill University in the Department of Pharmacology. Following postdoctoral training at the University of Toronto in the Department of Physiology, he moved to the Robarts Research Institute at Western University in 2008 as a Research Scientist and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology. A major focus of his research is to understand how specific families of Ca2+-permeable channels, previously implicated in neurological disease, contribute to the loss of Ca2+ homeostasis, impaired synaptic transmission and plasticity as well as neuronal cell death associated with AD and other neurodegenerative disorders. These studies make use of multidisciplinary approaches including, electrophysiological, biochemical and cellular imaging techniques. Epilepsy is the most common chronic neurological disorder in children and is characterized by recurrent unprovoked seizures due to uncontrolled electrical activity in the brain. Thirty per cent or more of epilepsy cases do not respond to conventional epileptic medications. Other treatments for epilepsy are epilepsy surgery, vagus nerve stimulation, the ketogenic diet and investigational anti-epileptic drugs. The epilepsy surgery program at BC Children's Hospital was established in the mid 90s. My research focuses on outcomes following epilepsy surgery of various types and the influence of surgery on seizure control, quality of life, learning and attention. Manitoba Neuroscience Network 2014/2015 Seminar & Visiting Speaker Series Friday, November 7th, 2014 | 3:00 pm Dr. Robert Brownstone <http://neurosurgery.medicine.dal.ca/rbrownstone.htm> Professor, Departments of Medical Neuroscience & Surgery; Director of Research, Division of Neurosugery, Dalhousie University Topic: Sensorimotor confluence and spinal cord plasticity following injury. Location: THEATRE B, Bannatyne Campus (*Reception immediately following lecture in CanadInn Hotel, 2nd floor, Ambassador Room A) Brief Biosketch: A native of Manitoba, Rob Brownstone completed most of his training at the University of Manitoba, beginning with a B.Sc. in computer science, followed by MD and PhD degrees. He then pursued post-doctoral training in neurophysiology at the Panum Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark, before returning to the University of Manitoba for residency training in neurosurgery. He accepted a faculty position there, where he practiced for five years as a neurosurgeon and spinal cord researcher before re-locating to Dalhousie University in 2000. Dr. Rob Brownstone is a Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Spinal Cord Circuits, and Professor in the Departments of Surgery (Neurosurgery) and Medical Neuroscience at Dalhousie University. As a functional neurosurgeon, he treats patients with Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders, intractable pain syndromes, and epilepsy. Work in his laboratory focuses on neural circuits controlling movement. Specifically, he studies how the brain activates spinal cord neuronal circuits to produce movement, how these spinal cord circuits are configured to produce appropriate motor coordination, and how circuits between the spinal cord and muscles ensure appropriate limb movement. His research is currently supported by three grants from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, as well as grants from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation and Nova Scotia Research and Innovation Trust. He is frequently an invited speaker to international meetings, and sits on a variety of national and international neuroscience research committees and boards. On September 18, 2014, Dr Brownstone was inducted as a Fellow into the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. Dr. Siddiqui is appointed in the Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology but his research program will be located in the Kleysen Institute Neuroscience Research Program. Biomedical Engineering seminar on traumatic brain injury

Speaker: Dr. Brittany Coats, PhD (University of Utah) Title: The Effect of the Pia-Arachnoid Complex on Predictions of Traumatic Brain Injury Time: 5:30-6:30 PM Date: Thursday, October 09, 2014 Location: E2-330 Engineering Building (Fort Garry Campus) Abstract: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is often identified by the presence of subdural and/or sub-arachnoid hemorrhages that develop from ruptured cortical vessels during brain-skull displacement. The pia-arachnoid complex (PAC) serves as a mechanical tether between the brain and skull, and likely influences the development of these hemorrhages during head trauma. Finite element (FE) modeling of the head, brain, and skull is used to investigate TBI, but most investigations fail to represent the complex substructures of the PAC. Using an innovative application of optical coherence tomography (OCT), we characterized the variability of the PAC substructure density across the brain and used the microsctructural information to develop a multiscale finite element model for predicting intracranial hemorrhage associated with rapid rotations of the head. This multiscale approach has increased our overall accuracy for predicting hemorrhages in TBI from 80-85% to 94-100%. More importantly, it has improved regional predictions of hemorrhage from 63-88% to 86-100%. Biosketch: Dr. Brittany Coats is an Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Utah, with Adjunct Assistant Professor affiliations in Bioengineering and Pediatrics. She completed her undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Utah and then went on to earn her PhD in Bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania. Her post-doctoral work, evaluating the effect of repetitive head trauma in an animal model, was in collaboration with the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Pennsylvania. Her current research interests focus on characterizing biological structures of the head and eye as they change with age, and identifying how these mechanical changes influence injury. Bannatyne Campus Brief Biosketch: Dr. Jean-Eric Ghia is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Immunology and Internal Medicine section of Gastroenterology at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada. He is also Director, Gastrointestinal Basic Biology Research, at the Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Clinical and Research Centre. Dr. Ghia completed his B.Sc in Neurophysiology, M.Sc in Pharmacology, Clinical Trail Investigator Diploma and Ph.D in Neurosciences at the University of Strasbourg, France. To further build on his expertise, he moved to McMaster University to train with Dr. Stephen M Collins, a world authority in the field of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. Dr. Ghia obtained several research awards and prizes, including a prize from the prestigious l'Institut de France and a fellowship from the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology and the Canadian Institute of Health research. Speaker #1: Essi Shams, MSc Candidate (University of Manitoba BME Graduate Program) Title: MR compatible PET detectors, performance and stability Time: 5:30-6:00 PM Date: Thursday, September 25, 2014 Location: E2-330 Engineering Building (Fort Garry Campus) Abstract: The Biomedical Imaging Lab at the U of M is building a MR compatible PET system to enable simultaneous PET-MR imaging of small animals inside a 7T animal MR imaging system. The output and characteristics of detectors in this system vary with temperature and supply voltage. I this talk, I will describe the evolution of MR-compatible PET systems and make a case for the development of a control system to monitor the detector in such an imaging system and stabilize their output. Results from our MR compatible PET system will be presented. Biosketch: Essi Shams is a M.Sc. student in biomedical engineering with a background as a computer engineer. Before joining the biomedical engineering program, he has worked as a technical support engineer, lead technical trainer and system developer. At the University of Manitoba, he has been working on a network-based control system for a MR compatible PET insert. Speaker #2: Vanessa Palmer, MSc Candidate (University of Manitoba BME Graduate Program) Title: A Proposed Solution to the 'Clinical - Radiological Paradox' associated with Multiple Sclerosis Time: 6:00-6:30 PM Date: Thursday, September 25, 2014 Location: E2-330 Engineering Building (Fort Garry Campus) Abstract: Multiple sclerosis (MS), the most common neurological disease affecting young adults in Canada, is a demyelinating disease that is unpredictable and often disabling. Despite considerable research effort, the etiology of the disease is unknown and there is no known cure. A reason for this gap in knowledge is the "clinical-radiological paradox," or limited correlation between the clinical signs and symptoms of MS and the changes seen on conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Quantitative MRI such as diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), magnetization transfer imaging (MTI) and multicomponent T2 analysis (mcT2) show promise in understanding changes in white matter integrity associated with MS but more work is needed to understand the correlations between the MRI metrics and the pathological changes. We hypothesize that the correlations between MRI findings and clinical status can be improved through correlations between qMRI metrics and pathological changes. Understanding how these MRI metrics vary with changes in white matter integrity improves our understanding of demyelinating diseases such as MS allowing us to understand what processes need to be targeted for treatments. As we begin this new academic year, I would like to give you an update on the outreach events and opportunities that Winnipeg Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience has developed over the last several months. Neuroscience Speaker's Bureau Our Neuroscience Speaker's Bureau continues to take shape, and thank you to everyone who has submitted the online form. Brain Awareness Week - Visit by Dr. Matthew Farrer Brain Awareness Week will be held March 16-22, 2015, and as part of this event I am pleased to announce that we will be hosting CERC chair Dr. Matthew Farrer from UBC. He will be giving both scientific and public talks, and further details about his visit will be distributed as they become available. Brain Awareness Week - Café Scientifique On March 18th, 2015, also during BAW, the Chapter will be co-sponsoring a session in the Café Scientifique series with the Office of the VP Research: http://umanitoba.ca/research/cafescientifique/media/Cafe_Schedule.pdf . The session is entitled, "Keeping Your Head in the Game: How Concussions Affect the Brain". Series Short Biosketch: Dr. Morshead did her PhD at the University of Toronto and joined the faculty in the Department of Surgery in 2003. She is currently a tenured Professor and Chair of the Division of Anatomy, Department of Surgery. Dr. Morshead's expertise is in stem cell biology and specifically, in the field of adult neural stem cells. Her lab is interested in exploring fundamental questions regarding the behaviour and characterization of neural stem cells and applying this knowledge to regenerative medicine strategies. Manitoba Neuroscience Network Seminar and Visiting Speaker Series

I'm pleased to announce that there will be a new and improved MNN seminar and visiting speaker series in 2014-2015. Dr. Eftekhar Eftekharpour will once again direct the series. This year we will continue providing seminars from local neuroscientists on the last Friday of each month during the second hour (9-10 am) of Clinical Neuroscience Rounds. IN ADDITION, we will expand our number of visiting speakers to a total of 6 between September and June. These talks will be held on Friday afternoons and will be accompanied by opportunities for food, drink and social interaction.
