Dear Neuroscientists, We just finished the 2014 Manitoba Neuroscience Network meeting but I must already look forward to the 2015 meeting. The 2015 meeting will be held in Winnipeg in June and will be symposium-style with full trainee participation much like the first 4 meetings were formatted. The plan is to alternate between this format and retreat format from now on. To make these meetings useful for all, they must be well-planned. I am looking for potential position(s) as a research associate and/or project manager to carry on a given challenging projects and/or to allow me to use my expertise in research on neurodegenerative disease. Post-doctoral experience on multi-disciplinary fields; 1. Identification of non-coding RNA targets of RNA binding protein FUS, and their role in vivo and modulation of direct targets in generated animal mouse model system related to human disease and cancer 2. Development of novel gene targeting and tagging techniques to generate knock-out and conditional, and GFPs, mCherry, Biotin-tagged gene of interest of transgenic animal model system for molecular signaling pathways in immune response and cancer progression. 3. Specializing from manipulation of mouse stem cell (mSCs), induced pluripotent stem cell (miPS) and embryonic body formation (mEB) to construction and design of large scale vector construction system using latest recombineering technology tools Undertook PhD at Department of Physiology, U of MANITOBA. I specialized on gene regulation to dissect mechanisms of regulatory factors involved in rPlacental Lactogen II gene regulation and expression during placental development using molecular biology, proteomics and generation of transgenic mice model system in vivo Completed M.Sc. at Faculty of Medicine, Department of Medical Biology and Genetics, U of AKDENIZ. I was specialized as a human cytogeneticist on diagnosis of structural chromosome analysis in blood and bone marrow associated disease and cancer as well as breast and lung cancer. In parallele, I took a role in establishment of protocols and methods to advance the pre-clinical screening applications (diagnostics). In addition, I worked as clinical geneticist in medical research. My profession practice includes; - Hands on extensive expertise in gene editing/modification tools and manipulation of any given protein and non-protein coding genes - Performing cellular, molecular biology, proteomics and stem cell technologies - Generation and phenotyping of transgenic mice - Design and planning proposals and literature analysis - Grant writing and reviewing (including fellowship proposals) - Conducting clinical and basic research projects, and complies with the anticipated time line - Managing members of a given research team, training and supervising students - Eager to learn and establish new protocols and efficiency in independent work I have generated a number of transgenic mice that can be utilized for future and I would like to explore the potential use of them if applicable. He was the proprietor of several movie houses in Winnipeg's famous "North End." Best remembered of these were the Starland, the Colonial and the Regent. Mr. Weiner was keenly interested in research. He died in 1960 and left $15,000 to the University of Manitoba. In 1968 the Samuel Weiner Distinguished Visitor Award and its terms of reference were approved by the University Senate. The endowment was recapitalized from interest to allow for annual awards. The first award was made in 1980. Dear All, As you know, we established to Manitoba Neuroscience Network as an offshoot of the Winnipeg Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience to enhance interaction among scientists with research interests in the neurosciences. However, the intent was also to leverage the network as a tool to establish an identity for neuroscience research at the University of Manitoba that is currently largely non-existent. I and others have been told over and over that when outsiders, including potential recruits, search "neuroscience" and "umanitoba," there is no useful output. This makes it seem as though we do not do meaningful neuroscience research in Manitoba despite the truth that we have neurosciences PI's approaching 50! I think we can remedy that very nicely by building a virtual institute with a high-quality, updated, visually pleasing website that features the full breadth of our neurosciences research interests and capabilities. This endeavour was, in fact, near the top of the priority list built by network members at the first scientific meeting during breakout sessions. I would like to make it happen now. To get this going, I would like to assemble a committee of a few network members to decide on content, design, brand and a way to proceed. I know that there are members who are well-suited for this. The Weston Brain Institute has new funding opportunities available. Please have a close look: All funding programs support translational research to accelerate the development of therapeutics for neurodegenerative diseases of aging. As the Institute defines it, these diseases include: * Alzheimer's disease * Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) * Dementia with Lewy bodies * Frontotemporal dementia * Mild cognitive impairment as prodromal to one of the other listed diseases * Multiple system atrophy * Parkinson's disease * Progressive supranuclear palsy Submissions open: approximately August 2014 Seed funding (up to $150,000 for up to 18 months) for high-risk, high-reward, totally novel ideas. Manitoba Neuroscience Network Seminar Series Friday, May 30, 2014 | 9:00 AM Dr. Eftekhar Eftekharpour Assistant Professor, Regenerative Medicine Program Spinal Cord Research Centre Department of Physiology University of Manitoba Topic: Manipulation of Redox Regulation for Neurotrauma Repair. Location: PX236/238 Psych Health Bldg. Research in Neuroprotection: My laboratory is interested in understanding the cellular and molecular events after Neurotrauma . Our overall aim is to find clinically relevant neuroprotective approaches to decrease the extent of cell death and to enhance cell survival after injury/stroke. Increasing evidence indicate that limiting the extent of cell death will result in improved tissue repair and functional recovery for patients. Despite extensive research in this field, there is currently no effective treatment available. In our laboratory, we focus on the oxidative stress as a major underlying mechanism in injury and stroke pathophysiology. We aim to: 1) use antioxidant therapy to enhance neural cell survival immediately after injury. 2) enhance cell preservation and regeneration for enhancement of repair. Short Biosketch: Eftekhar received his BSc and MSc from Tehran University, Iran. He moved to Canada in 1996 to study Neuroscience at the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology University of Saskatchewan. After graduating in 2001, he moved to Toronto Western Hospital Research Institute for a postdoctoral training in Spinal Cord Injury in the Laboratory of Dr. Michael Fehlings. His work focused on understanding the cellular and molecular systems involved in spinal cord injury and repair with special interests in stem cell therapy. His work has been published in the leading journals of the field including the Journal of Neuroscience. After completion of post-doctoral training, he worked as a staff scientist at the University Health Network Spinal Cdrd Injury Group in Toronto until 2010, when he moved to the Spinal Cord Research Centre at the University of Manitoba. Eftekhar has established his laboratory in 2012 and his research focuses on neuroprotection strategies for treatment of neurotrauma. To see the list of next scheduled BME seminars, please seehere: http://umanitoba.ca/biomedical_engineering/courses/bme_seminars.html Abstract of the talk Oxygen plays a critical role in almost every cell of the body, from energy production in the mitochondria to generation of key signaling molecules such as nitric oxide and carbon monoxide. To fulfill these functions, O2 must diffuse from an O2 source (e.g. erythrocyte in a capillary) through the cell (or cells) to the site where it will be used (consumed). But diffusion into an O2 consuming tissue places a biophysical limitation on the maximum cell size and the maximum distance between O2 sources within an organ. Ninety five years ago Krogh was the first to recognize that it was not adequate to simply deliver the correct amount of O2 to an organ, the vasculature needed to match the distribute the O2 supply to the O2 needs of the tissue to within a few 10's of micrometers of where it would be consumed. To meet this design constraint Krogh proposed that capillary density was actively controlled; as O2 consumption increased more capillaries would be recruited to minimize diffusion distances. Despite the importance of Krogh's insights, there was a fundamental flaw in his model of tissue oxygenation and his concept of capillary recruitment has never been proven. This talk will describe our current understanding of how the microvasculature regulates the distribution of O2 supply within a tissue. The situation is far more complex than controlling capillary density due to a wide range of factors such as the unique fluid dynamic properties of blood flow in the network of very small vessels that make up the microvasculature (arterioles, capillaries and venules), the complex three dimensional geometry of the microvasculature and diffusional exchange of O2 among all levels of the microvasculature as well as with the tissue. Our hypothesis is that the O2 supply to individual capillary units (capillaries supplied by a single terminal arteriole) is regulated by the hemoglobin O2 saturation dependent release of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) from red blood cells in capillaries and that receptors on the capillary endothelium detect the ATP levels and signal upstream arterioles to dilate via conducted hyperpolarization of endothelial membrane potential. To test the hypothesis that individual capillary units can regulate their O2 supply, we used a microfluidic device to perturb O2 levels in small groups of capillaries at the surface of skeletal muscle in rat hindlimb and a dual wavelength intravital video microscopy system for measuring red blood cell flow and O2 saturation in these capillaries. BME PhD student, Nour Ghonaim, demonstrated that individual capillary units were able to signal for an increase in O2 supply when capillaries were exposed to low O2 levels. Since O2 levels in arterioles were not affected this result supports our hypothesis of a conducted signal from capillaries to arterioles. Our conclusion is that discrete networks of capillaries, with the red blood cell as the O2 sensor, are able to regulate upstream arteriolar resistance to ensure that the distribution of O2 supply matches the O2 needs of the tissue and that O2 regulation occurs at the level of capillary units not individual capillaries as proposed by Krogh. Bio of the Speaker Dr. Christopher Ellis graduated from McMaster University in Hamilton with a B.Eng. degree in Chemical Engineering. In 1980 he completed his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He began his postdoctoral training with Alan C. Groom in Biophysics at The University of Western Ontario in 1979 and in 1982 he was appointed as an Assistant Professor supported initially by a Senior Scholarship (1982-89) and later a Career Investigator Award of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario (1989-94). From 1995 through 2004 he served as Graduate Chair for Medical Biophysics. From June 2006 to June 2009 he served as Assistant Dean - Research, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and from July 2009 to December 2009 as Associate Dean - Research. He is currently a Professor in the Departments of Medical Biophysics and Medicine. Dr. Ellis has trained over 20 graduate students, clinical trainees and post-doctoral fellows. He has published over 80 journal articles with total of ~3200 citations. His research on oxygen transport in the microvasculature has been funded by grants from CIHR, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, NSERC and NIH. 2014 Nick Shepel Student Travel Award Competition deadline: June 13, 2014 The Nick Shepel Student Travel Award was established by the Division of Neurodegenerative Disorders, St. Boniface Hospital Research to honor Nick Shepel who was an outstanding researcher, friend and leader. Nick was a true inspiration to his lab partners and brought fire, humor, and a desire to always do better. His insistence to always try better will have a permanent effect on his lab mates. Nick led by example and taught that detailed preparation and execution of experiments ensured reliable results. Purpose: The purpose of this fund shall be to recognize a young investigator (graduate student within the Faculty of Medicine - University of Manitoba) by providing an annual award(s) (up to $1,000 max) to support travel costs associated with the applicant's attendance at a future national/international conference where the applicant is presenting a poster or oral presentation. Diffuse optical imaging (DOI) is inexpensive and portable compared to other vascular imaging modalities such as MRI or positron emission tomography (PET). One of the advantages of the DOS systems is that they are portable, so it provides the ability to measure cerebral blood oxygenation, volume, or flow using portable instrumentation. DOS can be used for different types of bedside monitoring. Using multi-channel DOS and DOI systems, optical brain imaging can be applied to various psychology functional tests in adults, children, and more recently infants. In this presentation I am going to talk about optical properties of the brain, basic types of NIRS systems, fNIRS signal processing and applications of NIRS. Also, I will talk about the CW-NIRS system that we have built in our lab and its results. He has served as lead or senior author on more than 160 publications. A brief synopsis of Dr. Silver's work: Over the past several decades, Dr. Silver has concentrated his research efforts learning whether molecules that glia produce after spinal cord injury may play a major role in blocking regeneration. Of particular interest, the chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans (CSPGs), were first discovered by the Silver's lab in the early 1990's to be involved in impeding regeneration. His lab has pioneered the use of the CSPG degrading enzyme chondroitinase to reveal the important role of the glycosaminoglycan (GAG) sugar chains. Dr. Silver's lab has shown that adult nerve cells could regenerate their axons with high efficiency and at high rates of speed even in fully degenerating white matter and even at long chronic stages after injury, challenging long held beliefs that this was impossible. Currently, his research focuses on the regenerative approaches that target the CSPG receptors. These receptors identified originally by his laboratory may hold the key for enhancing regeneration after Spinal Cord Injury. Dear Colleagues, I am so pleased to be the new Director of Outreach for our chapter, and I would like to thank Chris for giving me the opportunity to serve the neuroscience community in this way. As Chris has mentioned, our primary goal is to develop a consistent and meaningful program of outreach over the next several years. You will be hearing from me about our initiatives over the next several months. Engagement from neuroscientists at all levels will be key to the success of these programs, and I hope that you will consider participating. Our first project is to develop a Neuroscience Speaker's Bureau - a directory of neuroscientists who are willing to give public talks on neuroscience-related topics. This directory will be available to the public on the chapter website. At this time, we are compiling the names of interested individuals, and we will then contact you to build your profile. Once the directory is completed, we will then advertise it to attract groups who are interested in hosting speakers. At present, there is no time commitment on your part. Neuroscience Outreach

Dear Neuroscientists, As you know, one of the primary responsibilities of the Winnipeg Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience is community outreach. The Chapter has been involved in Brain Awareness week and has given awards for neuroscience projects in school science fairs, among other initiatives recently. Our goal, however, is to gain a more consistent and meaningful outreach presence overall. To help achieve this goal, Dr. Sari Hannila has generously agreed to be the Director of Outreach for the Chapter. She has several initiatives planned and you will see emails from her from time to time describing them. One of her first plans is to develop a roster of scientists who would be willing to give public outreach presentations. Once the list is compiled, she will ask for specific information so she can prepare the roster for 'marketing' and posting on the Winnipeg Chapter website. She obtained her Ph.D. in Biotechnology and Molecular Brain Research in 2001 from the University of Kuopio, Finland. Her Ph.D. studies (published in her maiden name, Tikka) discovered the neuroprotective potential of minocycline, an antibiotic that has several anti-inflammatory functions unrelated to its anti-microbial mechanisms. Dr. Kauppinen did her postdoctoral training at the University of California, San Francisco (2002-2006). After which she became an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology at University of California, San Francisco (2006-2012). Dr. Kauppinen joined the Faculty of Medicine, University of Manitoba July 2012. Her research focuses on the role of microglia and neuroinflammation in acute (ie- stroke) and chronic (ie- Alzheimer's disease) central nervous system disorders, and on the effects of chronic inflammation on fetal (ie- gestational diabetes) and infant (ie- poor diet) neurocognitive development. The overall goals of her research program are to 1) understand how microglial functions affect neurodegeneration, neurogenesis and neuronal functions, 2) establish approaches to modulate microglial responses, and 3) develop new therapeutic strategies with multiple disease relevance. Dr. Kauppinen received a prestigious Jordi Folch Pi award 2008 from American Society for Neurochemistry. Her research has been funded by grants from American Heart and Stroke and Alzheimer Society of Canada. 2014 MNN Retreat - June 26-27 GIMLI, MB

Dear Neuroscientists: As you all know, the MNN has held annual scientific meetings each of the last 4 years. The format for the meetings has been similar for each of these years and although the meetings have been well-received, we would like to introduce other formats that encourage networking and collaboration. One of these formats is a retreat-style structure that brings principal investigators together off-campus with opportunities for social interaction as well as a scientific program. This year, I have stepped aside from organizing the meeting and Paul Fernyhough will be serving as MNN meeting chair. He is looking at organizing a retreat in Gimli on June 26-27. This meeting will be for PI's only. We agree that the retreat format will likely attract fewer PI's but also that those who do attend will be focussed and enthusiastic, producing a successful event. Around 25 PI's gave a preliminary indication they would attend in response to a previous email from Paul, which I think is a strong indication that the event would succeed. Overall, the idea is that while there may be a retreat-style or alternative format meeting from time to time, there will be a traditional scientific meeting with full trainee participation at least every second year. So the plan will be to hold a more traditional style meeting again next in 2015. Thanks to Paul for taking charge. PI's can expect to receive further information from Paul. Please give him a strong idea of whether you will attend given the details he will outline. That way, he can design the best format possible. I encourage you all to participate! Biosketch: Dr. V. Wee Yong is a Professor at the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and the Departments of Clinical Neurosciences and Oncology at The University of Calgary. He co-directs the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Program of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, providing the basic science leadership, and he holds the Canada Research Chair in Neuroimmunology. Dr. Yong received his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, and started his faculty appointment at the Montreal Neurological Institute, McGill University, in 1989. He located to Calgary in 1996. Dr. Yong's research interests lie in the area of neuroimmunology, neuroprotection and CNS regeneration, and his projects have been guided by MS, spinal cord injury and malignant gliomas. Dr. Yong has published 230 peer-reviewed manuscripts and his research has been translated into clinical trials in MS and spinal cord injury. His work has been cited over 12,000 times by other authors in scientific publications. In 2003, Dr. Yong was awarded the Queen's Golden Jubilee Year Medallion for volunteer activities on behalf of the MS Society of Canada. In 2010, Dr. Yong was elected a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, a top honor for those working in the medical sciences. Dr. Yong is the immediate past chair of the Medical Advisory Committee of the MS Society of Canada, he directs the Alberta endMS Regional Research and Training Center, and he is on the editorial board of 7 international journals. In 2012, Dr. Yong was elected by an international community to be the Vice President of the International Society of Neuroimmunology; he will become its President in 2014. Brief description of research interests: Neuroimmunology is the study of inflammation in the nervous system. Virtually all neurological disorders have inflammatory components, and these include diseases traditionally associated with overt inflammation, such as multiple sclerosis (MS), and those previously thought to be purely degenerative, including Alzheimer's disease. Neuroinflammation originates from the trafficking of several leukocyte subsets into the nervous system and through the production of immune molecules by neural cells themselves. The interaction between leukocytes and neural cells further promotes neuroinflammation and injury. In recent years, reparative properties of neuroinflammation have been appreciated, so that the balance between beneficial and detrimental neuroinflammation is a crucial determinant of outcome. My research projects have been guided by 3 diseases of the central nervous system (CNS): MS, spinal cord injury (SCI) and brain tumors (malignant gliomas). MS and SCI provide my research program with diseases of chronic and acute neuroinflammation, respectively. In contrast, malignant gliomas present a disease of immunosuppression, whereby the cancer cells neutralize the activity of leukocytes that infiltrate into these tumors. My research has been translated into clinical trials in MS and in spinal cord injury. Collectively, my studies of neuroimmunology are aimed at understanding, controlling and tipping the balance of neuroinflammation towards one of neuroprotection and regeneration from CNS insults. Presented in co-operation with University of Manitoba Clinical Neuroscience Rounds ************************************** Division of Neurodegenerative Disorders, St. Boniface Hospital Research Neuroscience Seminar Series Friday, February 28th2014 12:00 Noon 500 John Buhler Research Centre - Bannatyne Campus Dr. Bruce Perkins<http://www.uhnresearch.ca/researchers/profile.php?lookup=7067> Associate Professor, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism University of Toronto & Clinician Scientist, Lunenfeld Tanenbaum Research Institute, Leadership Sinai Centre for Diabetes, Mount Sinai Hospital Topic: The Identification of Diabetic Neuropathy in type 1 Diabetes Biosketch: Bruce A Perkins, MD MPH is Associate Professor and Endocrinologist at the University of Toronto, and a Diabetes Complications Clinician-Scientist. He obtained his MD and Internal Medicine training at the University of Toronto, his endocrinology subspecialty training at Harvard University, his Masters of Public Health in Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, and a research fellowship in epidemiology at the Joslin Diabetes Center. In 2003 he was appointed at the Toronto General Hospital and earned a Canadian Diabetes Association early career personnel award for his work in diabetic neuropathy. His clinical practice has focused on type 1 diabetes management, and he directed the formation of an insulin pump program at the UHN. His research work has focused on clinical biomarkers for the early stages of diabetes complications using longitudinal cohort methods as well as clinical trials. Highlights are "Early GFR Loss" as a predictive marker for risk of advanced kidney disease using serial cystatin C analysis and the concept of in-vivo Corneal Confocal Microscopy as a method to analyze the small fiber morphological abnormalities that predict diabetic neuropathy. His clinical trial work in insulin pump and continuous glucose monitoring interventions has contributed to refinements in type 1 diabetes care. He is active on national and international diabetes clinical practice guideline committees including Microvascular Chair on the CDA's 2013 Clinical Practice Guidelines Steering Committee. He has received funding from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Canadian Diabetes Association, CIHR, and the Banting and Best Diabetes Center and is a member of the JDRF's Canadian Clinical Trial Network. He is initiating a JDRF-funded nation-wide cohort study to determine factors associated with longevity in type 1 diabetes. Dear Neuroscientists, We have started to plan the Manitoba Neuroscience Network - 2014 Annual Meeting and are again looking into the possibility of holding a Retreat-style meeting mid-end of June, held over 2 days, at a site within two hours drive (e.g. Whiteshell, Kenora etc.) where a stay overnight would be encouraged (to enhance team building!). Our main focus for this year will be to feature new staff's research, with a secondary focus on promoting interests in establishing research teams (ideally linking CIHR pillars 1 and 2). Therefore, we encourage attendance from researchers in the basic and clinical realms. By at least getting pillars 1 and 2 to communicate at some point in the future we could then identify possible staff in pillars 3 and 4 at UofM (or elsewhere). And then we have the basis for competitive team grants with a strong UofM flavor. Could those that would potentially attend a retreat-style meeting in mid-end June, held over 2 days at a site ~2 hrs drive away (e.g. Whiteshell, etc), please respond ASAP so we can start planning. Biosketch: Dr. V. Wee Yong is a Professor at the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and the Departments of Clinical Neurosciences and Oncology at The University of Calgary. He co-directs the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Program of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, providing the basic science leadership, and he holds the Canada Research Chair in Neuroimmunology. Dr. Yong received his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, and started his faculty appointment at the Montreal Neurological Institute, McGill University, in 1989. He located to Calgary in 1996. Dr. Yong's research interests lie in the area of neuroimmunology, neuroprotection and CNS regeneration, and his projects have been guided by MS, spinal cord injury and malignant gliomas. Dr. Yong has published 230 peer-reviewed manuscripts and his research has been translated into clinical trials in MS and spinal cord injury. His work has been cited over 12,000 times by other authors in scientific publications. In 2003, Dr. Yong was awarded the Queen's Golden Jubilee Year Medallion for volunteer activities on behalf of the MS Society of Canada. In 2010, Dr. Yong was elected a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, a top honor for those working in the medical sciences. Dr. Yong is the immediate past chair of the Medical Advisory Committee of the MS Society of Canada, he directs the Alberta endMS Regional Research and Training Center, and he is on the editorial board of 7 international journals. In 2012, Dr. Yong was elected by an international community to be the Vice President of the International Society of Neuroimmunology; he will become its President in 2014. Brief description of research interests: Neuroimmunology is the study of inflammation in the nervous system. Virtually all neurological disorders have inflammatory components, and these include diseases traditionally associated with overt inflammation, such as multiple sclerosis (MS), and those previously thought to be purely degenerative, including Alzheimer's disease. Neuroinflammation originates from the trafficking of several leukocyte subsets into the nervous system and through the production of immune molecules by neural cells themselves. The interaction between leukocytes and neural cells further promotes neuroinflammation and injury. In recent years, reparative properties of neuroinflammation have been appreciated, so that the balance between beneficial and detrimental neuroinflammation is a crucial determinant of outcome. My research projects have been guided by 3 diseases of the central nervous system (CNS): MS, spinal cord injury (SCI) and brain tumors (malignant gliomas). MS and SCI provide my research program with diseases of chronic and acute neuroinflammation, respectively. In contrast, malignant gliomas present a disease of immunosuppression, whereby the cancer cells neutralize the activity of leukocytes that infiltrate into these tumors. My research has been translated into clinical trials in MS and in spinal cord injury. Collectively, my studies of neuroimmunology are aimed at understanding, controlling and tipping the balance of neuroinflammation towards one of neuroprotection and regeneration from CNS insults. He obtained his MD and Internal Medicine training at the University of Toronto, his endocrinology subspecialty training at Harvard University, his Masters of Public Health in Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, and a research fellowship in epidemiology at the Joslin Diabetes Center. In 2003 he was appointed at the Toronto General Hospital and earned a Canadian Diabetes Association early career personnel award for his work in diabetic neuropathy. His clinical practice has focused on type 1 diabetes management, and he directed the formation of an insulin pump program at the UHN. His research work has focused on clinical biomarkers for the early stages of diabetes complications using longitudinal cohort methods as well as clinical trials. Highlights are "Early GFR Loss" as a predictive marker for risk of advanced kidney disease using serial cystatin C analysis and the concept of in-vivo Corneal Confocal Microscopy as a method to analyze the small fiber morphological abnormalities that predict diabetic neuropathy. His clinical trial work in insulin pump and continuous glucose monitoring interventions has contributed to refinements in type 1 diabetes care. He is active on national and international diabetes clinical practice guideline committees including Microvascular Chair on the CDA's 2013 Clinical Practice Guidelines Steering Committee. He has received funding from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Canadian Diabetes Association, CIHR, and the Banting and Best Diabetes Center and is a member of the JDRF's Canadian Clinical Trial Network. He is initiating a JDRF-funded nation-wide cohort study to determine factors associated with longevity in type 1 diabetes. She then undertook a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Spinal Cord Injury and Stem Cell Research at the Toronto Western Research Institute. Dr. Karimi has had a long-term interest in spinal cord regeneration with a special focus on the application of neural stem cells for the treatment of spinal cord injury (SCI). During her training, she received a number of academic and research awards including postdoctoral fellowships from the CIHR, Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Her postdoctoral work broke a new ground in SCI therapeutic field by showing that transplantation of adult neural stem cells can be used therapeutically to replace lost oligodendrocytes and functionally restore the damaged myelin sheath around the injured axons with improved recovery of function. In 2006, she received the prestigious Synthes Award from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons for this work. Prior to joining the University of Manitoba in 2010, Dr. Karimi was an adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto from 2007 to 2009. Research Interests: Current research in Karimi's laboratory has focused on regenerative medicine strategies to therapeutically optimize the regenerative potential of resident and transplanted neural stem cells for SCI repair. Adult neural stem cells hold tremendous promise for the repair of injured spinal cord since they have multipotential abilities to replace all damaged neural cells and the potential to provide a supporting environment for repair and regeneration. Using pre-clinical models of SCI, Karimi's team strives to understand how the properties NSCs are modulated within the post-SCI niche. The goal is to recruit NSCs efficiently to replace damaged oligodendrocytes and promote axon remyelination and functional recovery. The team has recently discovered key factors that seem to play major roles in regulating the proliferation and differentiation of neural stem cells in SCI condition. Elucidating the underlying mechanisms of stem cell functions will aid in identifying potential therapeutic targets for enhancing cell replacement and tissue reconstruction after SCI. Dr. Karimi's research has been supported by national, international and local grants from CFI, NSERC, Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, Craig Neilsen Foundation, MHRC, Canadian Paraplegic Association, HSC Foundation, MICH, MMSF, Thorlakson Foundation, and U of M. Dear Neuroscientists and Winnipeg SFN Members: Happy New Year to all of you. One of the primary mandates of the Winnipeg Society for Neuroscience Chapter is community outreach. The Chapter is always looking for ways to share knowledge and opportunities. One way to do this is to provide expert public lectures or discussion opportunities to interested parties. I recently linked with the Human Resources Department of Standard Aero - a major aerospace industry employer in Winnipeg. They would very much like to arrange a neuroscience talk or discussion session with their employees. The topic and format are flexible and are ready to be shaped by a willing volunteer or volunteers. I would very much like to arrange something for them and possibly later for others in a similar manner. -------------------------------------- Sent on behalf of Dr. Mike Namaka Dear all, The purpose of this email is to inform you that Dr. Karen Ethans and myself (Dr. Mike Namaka) have recently founded a specialized research interest group called the "Manitoba Multiple Sclerosis Research Network". This research network organization is a non-profit organization that has a specific focus on the disease Multiple Sclerosis (MS). This organization was charged with the responsibility of identifying all MS specialists and people with an inherent interest in advancing our knowledge in the field of MS. The organization has drafted a preliminary outline identifying the core objectives of this special interest group which are as follows: Preliminary - Draft of Objectives for this Special Interest Group * To identify those individuals in Manitoba with a specialized expertise or interest in multiple sclerosis (MS). * To foster research collaboration amongst those individuals in Manitoba with a specialized expertise in MS. * To facilitate knowledge transfer and dissemination amongst the identified areas of areas of MS expertise through cross training of undergraduate, graduate and medical students. * To apply the knowledge transfer obtained amongst the MS sub-specialties through the joint submission to peer-reviewed granting agencies (CIHR, MS Society) that lead to the publication of high impact peer-reviewed publications. * To establish a stronger presence of MS research in Manitoba that will lead to increased participation of the MS specialists of Manitoba in the National endMS program. We are requesting your assistance in the distribution of this letter throughout your research units to assist us in identifying those individuals involved in MS research in Manitoba. We would like to extend an invitation to those individuals to join our organization free of charge. The organization meets quarterly and the next meeting will be held in the later part of December with a subsequent meeting held in March 2014.
