This email was sent on behalf of Dr. Katinka Stecina Please see attached poster for details: The Spinal Cord Research Centre would like to invite you to listen in our 2025 Research Seminar Series " Longitudinal spinal circuits for motor control" Martha Bagnall, PhD Associate Professor, Department of Neuroscience, Washington University, USA Dr. Bagnall worked with Sascha du Lac at the Salk Institute. There she studied intrinsic, synaptic, and circuit function in the mouse vestibular brainstem and cerebellum. During a postdoctoral position with Massimo Scanziani, she mapped the thalamic projection to inhibitory neurons in barrel cortex. Next, with David McLean at Northwestern University, she found that the spinal circuit in zebrafish contains parallel but distinct premotor pathways for independent control of dorsal and ventral musculature. The Bagnall lab at Washington University studies motor and postural circuits in zebrafish. The successful candidate will hold a joint tenure-stream appointment in the Department of Medical Neuroscience (80%) and the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science (20%) at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, with a salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. Required qualifications and experience for this position include a Ph.D. or equivalent, at least three years of postdoctoral experience, demonstrated research excellence in visual neuroscience, and demonstrated excellence or potential for excellence in teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an extramurally funded, dynamic research program in visual neuroscience. Applicants with research programs in fundamental and/or translational aspects of retinal circuitry, cell biology, or physiology, including the optic nerve and retinal pigment epithelium, as well as mechanisms of neurodegenerative and genetic vision disorders, are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will expand interactions with clinical research groups in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, leading to collaborative translational research efforts, and participate in the training of ophthalmology residents and fellows. As a member of the Department of Medical Neuroscience, they will have opportunities to interact and collaborate with faculty studying diverse areas of neuroscience, including neurodevelopment, spinal cord and locomotion, sleep, and nerve injury, and train students in the Medical Neuroscience graduate program. They will also contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching and administrative activities at the departmental and faculty levels. The successful candidate will join the Retina and Optic Nerve Research Laboratory, a shared laboratory space that includes facilities for microscopy, cell and tissue culture, live cell and in vivo ocular imaging, and electrophysiology. To support their research program, the successful candidate will have access to dedicated laboratory space, start-up funds, and state-of-the-art core facilities including Cellular and Molecular Digital Imaging, Biological Mass Spectrometry, Electron Microscopy, and Histology (https://medicine.dal.ca/research-dal-med/facilities.html). Additionally, the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science offers competitive research funding for new faculty members and scholarships for vision research trainees at all levels. REMINDER: Deadline July 31, 2024 [cid:image001.jpg@01D9977D.1476DAA0] We are pleased to announce that the Manitoba Neuroscience Network will again be accepting applications for 2024/25 TRAVEL AWARDS FOR NEUROSCIENCE PROJECTS. The travel awards are sponsored by the Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology (legacy funds from estates of Nancy Hettie Clark and Viktor Havlicek) and MNN. Three travel awards of up to $750 each are intended to be awarded annually to a graduate student and a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Manitoba. The application deadline is JULY 31st. The eligible travel period is between May 1, 2024 and April 30, 2025, BUT all eligible travel claims must be complete by March 31, 2025. Eligibility: Eligible trainees are either graduate students or postdoctoral fellows. Student candidates must be enrolled as full-time graduate students (PhD or MSc) in the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Manitoba, and have a cumulative graduate grade point average of 3.5 or greater (University of Manitoba scale). Postdoctoral fellow candidates must be within five years of having been awarded their Ph.D. and have a full-time appointment at the University of Manitoba or an affiliated hospital or institute. All candidates must demonstrate excellent research performance and potential in a neurosciences-related discipline, and must demonstrate they will disseminate research results that reflect a high-quality contribution by The University of Manitoba. In addition to supporting travel to present work at a national/international conference, applications to attend a neuroscience workshop will also be considered. [cid:image001.jpg@01D9977D.1476DAA0] We are pleased to announce that the Manitoba Neuroscience Network will again be accepting applications for 2024/25 TRAVEL AWARDS FOR NEUROSCIENCE PROJECTS. The travel awards are sponsored by the Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology (legacy funds from estates of Nancy Hettie Clark and Viktor Havlicek) and MNN. Three travel awards of up to $750 each are intended to be awarded annually to a graduate student and a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Manitoba. The application deadline is JULY 31st. The eligible travel period is between May 1, 2024 and April 30, 2025, BUT all eligible travel claims must be complete by March 31, 2025. Eligibility: Eligible trainees are either graduate students or postdoctoral fellows. Student candidates must be enrolled as full-time graduate students (PhD or MSc) in the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Manitoba, and have a cumulative graduate grade point average of 3.5 or greater (University of Manitoba scale). Postdoctoral fellow candidates must be within five years of having been awarded their Ph.D. and have a full-time appointment at the University of Manitoba or an affiliated hospital or institute. All candidates must demonstrate excellent research performance and potential in a neurosciences-related discipline, and must demonstrate they will disseminate research results that reflect a high-quality contribution by The University of Manitoba. In addition to supporting travel to present work at a national/international conference, applications to attend a neuroscience workshop will also be considered. [cid:image001.jpg@01D99EA7.ECDF6250] 2024 Nick Shepel Neuroscience Trainee Travel Award Application deadline: MAY 15TH, 2024 Background: The fund was established by the Division of Neurodegenerative Disorders, St. Boniface Hospital Research Centre, to honor Nick Shepel who was an outstanding researcher, friend and leader. Nick was a true inspiration to his laboratory partners and brought fire, humor, and a desire to always excel. His insistence to always try better has had a permanent effect on his lab mates and peers. Nick led by example and taught that detailed preparation and execution of experiments ensured reliable results. Purpose: The purpose of this fund shall be to recognize a young investigator(s) (specifically in the neuroscience area) by providing an annual award(s) to support travel costs associated with the applicant's attendance at an upcoming national/international conference where the applicant is presenting a poster or oral presentation. This year, awards are available with a value of up to $750. Eligibility: At the time of application, the following conditions are required: * Students must be registered as a full-time graduate student in the College of Medicine at the University of Manitoba. * The area of research being presented at the conference must relate to the field of neuroscience. * A student admitted under the "Provisional Status" may not receive the award during the provisional period. * Number of award(s) may vary each year. * Students must be giving an "IN-PERSON" poster or oral presentation at an upcoming scientific meeting (national/international). Virtual attendance does not qualify for award. * Students who have received this award previously should not apply. Thank you so much for your help and have a great weekend, Leigh Anne The Swayne Lab is recruiting a post-doctoral researcher in cellular and molecular neuroscience. Project: The post-doctoral researcher will investigate cross-cellular mechanisms regulating dendritic spine stability. Experiments will involve transgenic models both in situ and in vitro, a variety of imaging techniques (confocal, super-resolution, two-photon microscopy), cell biological and biochemical tools as well as electrophysiology, and behavioural studies. Opportunity: The post-doctoral researcher will have the opportunity to apply and expand their expertise in neuron and astrocyte biology across these approaches in a dynamic and collaborative research environment that values integrity, teamwork, equity, diversity, and inclusion. Qualifications and Skills: We encourage researchers who have obtained or will soon obtain their PhD with a demonstrated track record in cellular signaling and imaging research to apply.
