Manitoba Neuroscience Network Seminar: Dr. Gilbert Kirouac DATE: Friday, May 27th, 2011 TIME: 9:00 am LOCATION: 370 Helen Glass Bldg. (video-linked to Theatre "B") TOPIC: "Role of the midline thalamus in emotional arousal". Dr. Gilbert Kirouac Associate Professor Department of Oral Biology Faculty of Dentistry, University of Manitoba Dr. Kirouac's laboratory is interested in the brain mechanisms that regulate emotions and motivation. They use a combination of tract tracing and immunohistochemistry to identify anatomical connections; in vivo electrophysiology to measure neuron activity; in vivo voltametry to measure neurotransmitter release; and neuropharmacology combined with behavioral tests to understand functional mechanism involved in emotional behavior. His seminar will discuss the emerging role for the paraventricular nucleus of the midline thalamus in the regulation of emotional arousal and negative emotional states following a painful and fear-inducing experience. The possible implications of this research for the development of novel drug treatments for post traumatic stress disorder will also be presented. She performed her BSc and MSc in Tehran University in Iran. She then moved to Belgium and obtained a "Diplôme d'Etudes Approfondies (DEA)" in Biochemistry and Human Cellular Biology (1998) and a PhD degree in Biomedical Sciences (2000) from the "Université Catholiquede Louvain (UCL)" in Brussels. Dr. Rastegar performed her postdoctoral training at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, at the McGill Cancer Centre in Montreal and at the Indiana University Cancer Center, IN, USA. Title: Understanding the role of Epigenetics in Stem Cell Neurogenesis and Human Disease Abstract of research program: Epigenetics refer to heritable changes in phenotype controlled by mechanisms other than the DNA sequence. Epigenetics play central roles in neuronal development, stem cell differentiation, human disease and cancer. Stem cells have the properties of self-renewal and differentiation into different cell types. Dr. Rastegar lab studies the molecular mechanisms of stem cell differentiation by investigating the role of specific genes and epigenetic modifications during embryonic stem cell and neural stem cell neurogenesis. The research program of Dr. Rastegar in Regenerative Medicine addresses fundamental unanswered questions on the genetics and epigenetics of stem cell differentiation. Her research is aimed towards exploring stem cell potential for generating pure populations of specific cell types for cell-based therapy strategies of human disease. Dr. Rastegar research program is further focused on the molecular pathophysiology of Rett Syndrome (RTT). RTT is the best-studied form of autism spectrum disorders (ASD), linking epigenetics to neuronal maturation and human disease. RTT is a progressive neurological disorder, which is caused by mutations in the MECP2 gene. Rett Syndrome is the primary cause of mental retardation in females and currently has no efficient treatment. With advanced and cutting edge technologies in neuroscience, gene therapy and stem cell biology, Dr. Rastegar lab aims to develop novel therapeutic strategies for neurological disorders that currently have no treatment such as Rett Syndrome and autism. DND Neuroscience Seminar Series: Dr. Michael Kawaja Date: Friday, June 3, 2011 Time: 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM Location: Theatre C Dr. Michael Kawaja Professor, Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology Queen's University at Kingston Topic: Nerve Growth Factor - The driving force behind sympathetic sprouting. Biosketch: Dr. Kawaja did his undergraduate studies in biology at Acadia University and completed his doctoral degree in Anatomy at the University of Western Ontario in 1989. He then went on to have two MRC-funded post-doctoral positions, the first with Dr. Fred Gage at the University of California San Diego, and the second with Dr. John Roder at the Samuel Lunenfeld Institute at the Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto. In 1993 Dr. Kawaja commenced his MRC-funded scholarship position as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at Queen's University. Over the last 17 years he has risen through the ranks of Associate and Full Professor at Queen's. Dr. Kawaja has held numerous operating grants from CIHR (MRC), Heart and Stroke Foundation, Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation, and Ontario Mental Ontario Ministry for Research and Innovation. He has served as a panel member of CIHR Scholarships and continues to serve as a panel member for CIHR Neuroscience "B". He has also served on a number of peer review panels including those for Alzheimer Society of Canada, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, Ontario Mental Health Foundation, and Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation Early Researcher Awards. health Foundation. Dear Manitoba Neuroscientists, As you know, the Manitoba Neuroscience Network holds monthly seminars, the last Friday of each month, in cooperation with Clinical Neuroscience Rounds. Although most seminars have been in Theatre B at the Bannatyne Campus of the University of Manitoba, one of our objectives is to spread a few of these seminars around to the different neuroscience campuses in Winnipeg. We have had 2 at the St. Boniface Campus. They have been well-attended by St. Boniface neuroscientists but modestly attended by people from other campuses. The May seminar will be held on May 27, 9-10 am at the FORT GARRY CAMPUS, Helen Glass 370. The speaker is Dr. Gilbert Kirouac from the Faculty of Dentistry. Because the purpose of these seminars is largely to facilitate interaction/familiarization among neuroscientists, I encourage as many of you as possible to travel to the Fort Garry Campus for this event. For those who cannot leave the Bannatyne Campus, there will be a videolink to Theatre B. I am told it is functional but I will insist on testing to avoid what happened during the April seminar. Dear Manitoba Neuroscientists: Each year the Society for Neuroscience offers travel grants through its local Chapters. The Winnipeg Chapter is now accepting applications from graduate students and postdoctoral fellows for this competition. A Chapter committee will rank the applications and forward the top-ranked applications to the Society for Neuroscience for adjudication. In the past our Chapter has successfully attracted several of these awards so I encourage all trainees travelling to the SFN 2011 meeting to submit applications for travel funds. Situated deep in the temporal lobe of the human brain, lays the hippocampal formation, a network of circuits unlike any other structure in the nervous system. The hippocampus is the site of many disease processes, but there are two diseases that stand out; those being Alzheimer's disease and epilepsy. To this end, he has investigated the biological basis of memory impairment and alterations in neuronal excitability (eg., seizures) in the hippocampus caused by calcium overload and alterations in NF-kB signaling. He has developed several animal models to explore both novel mechanisms and novel therapies for treatment of those diseases. His methods include, electrophysiology, calcium imaging, behavioral tests, MRI, and standard cell and molecular assays. Dear Neuroscientists, The Canadian Association for Neuroscience (CAN) will be holding its 5th Annual Meeting May 29 to June 1 at the Québec City Convention Centre. While there are many options for our travel dollars, the CAN meeting has proven to be a useful conference of manageable size that brings together the best Canadian Neuroscientists. The meeting chair this year is Dr. Yves De Koninck and he has put together a very good program (www.canmeeting.ca). I encourage as many Manitobans as possible to attend this meeting. Several of us have been making an effort to showcase neuroscience in our province at this meeting since the first one but we need to do more. STUDENT TRAVEL FUNDS AVAILABLE: The CAN Secretary has informed me that significant travel funds are available for trainees (students and postdoctoral fellows) to travel to the 2011 CAN meeting provided local matching funds are available. The Annual Canadian Society for Brain, Behaviour and Cognitive Science Meeting will be held in Winnipeg at the Fort Garry Campus June 24-26, 2011. Page 145 of the 2011 budget document states: "Advancing Knowledge and Treatment of Brain Disorders Disorders of the brain are one of the major health challenges of the 21st century. It is estimated that one in three Canadians will face a mental illness or a neurological disorder or injury at some point in their lives. Brain Canada is a national, non-profit foundation dedicated to supporting research into new diagnostics, treatments and ultimately cures for brain disorders. To support Brain Canada's efforts, Budget 2011 proposes to allocate up to $100 million to help establish the Canada Brain Research Fund, which will support the very best Canadian neuroscience, fostering collaborative research and accelerating the pace of discovery, in order to improve the health and quality of life of Canadians who suffer from brain disorders. Federal funding for this initiative will be matched by resources raised from Brain Canada's other partners. This funding will be matched by $100 million of private donations raised by Brain Canada over the next five years to support a co-ordinated, national research program, in partnership with Neurological Health Charities Canada and the Canadian Association of Neuroscience. The goal of Canada Brain Research Fund is to maximize the impact of current investments in neuroscience research in Canada and reinforce a position of global leadership in neuroscience research, a field with limitless economic potential. The plan is to implement a coordinated national strategy for brain research in Canada with funding from private individuals, the charitable sector, and the government. The Canada Brain Research Fund will aim to support transformative team research to bring the results of scientific advances directly to patients, a series of national technology platforms to advance brain research, and a training program to support the next generation of neuroscientists. The implementation of the program will be developed jointly by Government and the partners in the near future. Meeting the Challenge of Brain Disorders The brain is the most vital and complex organ in the human body. Disorders of the brain account for a broad spectrum of conditions encompassing psychiatric diseases and neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, bipolar disorders, chronic pain, depression, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, schizophrenia and brain and spinal cord injuries and stroke. The economic and human impact of brain disorders exceeds that of cancer and cardiovascular disease combined. These facts are not meant to diminish the gravity of other diseases. Rather they underscore the pervasiveness and nature of brain disorders. While some brain diseases respond to treatment, there are no cures at the present time. People with a brain disorder may live for a long time with certain conditions, or with other conditions, they will slowly degenerate and lose function before dying. The resulting economic burden in Canada is estimated at $60 billion, or about 38% of the total burden of disease. Canada has a unique opportunity to turn the challenge of brain disorders and their enormous economic burden on our economy and society into an opportunity for global leadership. The key to realizing this opportunity is to ensure that the community of researchers has funding of the scale and scope required to encourage research that has application across multiple diseases. The budget announcement shows that the Government of Canada recognizes the need for increased funding for brain research and they have responded with a plan for investment in Canadian neuroscience research. They recognize the excellence in the Canadian neuroscience community and the value of investing in research to reduce the burden of brain diseases on Canada. Dr. David Eisenstat's laboratory is interested in the interface between Cancer and Development as well as understanding the genetic regulation of brain and retina development. Dr. Eisenstat graduated from the University of Toronto's Faculty of Medicine in 1985. Following an internship emphasizing surgery and a subsequent residency year in Anatomic Pathology at the University of Toronto, David completed his Pediatrics residency at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto in 1990. After a Clinical Fellowship in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, also at the Hospital for Sick Children, he was awarded a Fellowship from the Pediatric Scientist Development Program. David moved his family to San Francisco, where he joined the Brain Tumor Research Center at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). In 1993, David began a second postdoctoral fellowship funded by the Medical Research Council of Canada with Dr. John Rubenstein, also at UCSF, and was awarded a Master's degree in Neuroscience from UCSF in 1997. In 1998, David was a Clinical Fellow in Pediatric Neuro-Oncology at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. After over 13 years of post-medical school training, he began his first faculty appointment at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada, in 1999. Since 2005, he is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics & Child Health, and holds full cross-appointments as an Associate Professor in the Departments of Human Anatomy & Cell Science, Biochemistry & Medical Genetics and Ophthalmology, all at the University of Manitoba. As you are all aware, one objective of the Manitoba Neuroscience Network is to promote interaction among our neuroscientists. Part of this effort is holding the seminars at different neuroscience campuses from time to time. That said, the February 25 seminar is at ST. BONIFACE HOSPITAL RESEARCH CENTRE in the Cohen Auditorium. We would like to request that as many people as possible make an extra effort to come personally to the Cohen Auditorium for this event. We will even be providing donuts and coffee to encourage you! I do realize that there will be people (those attending rounds from 8-9) who cannot make it over in time. The seminar information is as follows: Manitoba Neuroscience Network Seminar - Dr. Hassan Marzban Date: Friday, February 25, 2011 Time: 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM Location: Samuel Cohen Auditorium, St. Boniface Campus** Dr. Hassan Marzban Assistant Professor, Department of Human Anatomy and Cell Science, Faculty of Medicine University of Manitoba TOPIC: The cerebellum: Pattern formation and early cerebellar development. **video-linked to Theatre B, Bannatyne Campus My research interests are to understand how genes and molecules control the neurogenesis, axonogenesis and pattern formation during cerebellar development. My immediate goals are to exploit the power of mouse genetic models to determine the cellular and molecular mechanism underlying the cellular and axonal organization in the early stages of the developing cerebellum. I also study pattern Purkinje cells degeneration in mouse mutant models. I utilize variety of cellular and molecular techniques, in vivo and in vitro, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to explore the pathologies underlying clinical significances of cerebellar pattern formation. I received my B.Sc. in Physiotherapy, Faculty of Rehabilitation Sciences, Iran University of Medical Sciences, followed by M.Sc. in Anatomy, Department of Anatomy, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. I received my Ph.D degree in Anatomy from Department of Anatomy, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran. I was recruited as an assistant professor at Medical School, Tehran University of Medical Sciences. I joined to Dr. R. Hawkes laboratory as visiting scientist and subsequently I recruited as an assistant professor (research) at the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary. Announcing the Canadian Neuroscience Association young Investigator Award

Dear all, Canadian Association for Neuroscience <http://www.can-acn.net/> has recently initiated a Young Investigator Award. The CAN Young Investigator Award recognizes outstanding research achievements by a young neuroscientist at the early stage of his or her career. Award The award will consist of economy class travel to the CAN annual meeting, accommodation at the conference hotel for three nights, complimentary conference registration and a $1000 award presented at the CAN annual meeting1. Eligibility Candidates must hold a PhD or MD degree (or equivalent), hold an academic or independent research appointment, be within 7 years of their first appointment in a Canadian university or affiliated research institution at the time of application2 and must be a current member in good standing with the Canadian Association for Neuroscience. Nomination Material A letter of nomination signed by three CAN regular members, along with the CV of the nominee should be submitted to the CAN Secretariat by email. Decisions are made by a CAN awards committee. To Apply Please send nominations by March 15, 2011 to jacqueline.turmel(a)crulrg.ulaval.ca. 1Travel to be arranged by the recipient. Hotel accommodation will be made by CAN. Call for Proposals for 2011 Spinal Cord Injury Research Projects The Manitoba Spinal Cord Injury Research Committee (MSCIRC) is pleased to announce that the 2011 Grants and Awards competition is now underway and accepting applications for spinal cord injury research projects in Manitoba. Purpose Grants provided through this initiative aim to increase understanding of spinal cord function; reduce the disability related to spinal cord injury; increase functional capacity after spinal cord injury; reduce the incidence and effects of secondary complications after spinal cord injury; and increase quality of life and community integration after spinal cord injury. Eligibility Grant applications will only be considered from accredited educational institutions, disability related organizations, research institutions or members of hospital staff. Summary of Research: Dr. Del Bigio is one of the few neuropathologists in the world who excels at both clinical and experimental neuropathology. He has investigated in detail the brain abnormalities associated with several diseases, in particular those of children (including complications of premature birth, hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy, and brain injury). He has developed animal models to explore novel methods for treatment of those diseases. The opportunities afforded by the Chair expand the horizons of neuropathology by intense integration with advanced imaging and engineering methods. The Winnipeg Chapter Society Neuroscience would like to make you aware of the following… COLLOQUIUM The Department of Clinical Health Psychology is pleased to present Dr. Devin Mueller & Dr. Shawn Cahill Assistant Professors, Department of Psychology, University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee Pharmacotherapy for fear/anxiety disorders and addiction: Basic mechanisms to clinical practice Part 1: Enhancing extinction and inhibiting retrieval of fear and drug seeking Part 2: Translation and clinical practice with exposure therapy Friday, January 21, 2011 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Basic Medical Sciences Building – 745 Bannatyne Avenue Theatre B Dr. Mueller studies the neural mechanisms of learning and memory as they pertain to drug use and emotional regulation. He is particularly interested in understanding how to overcome drug seeking and learned fear in order to inform treatment for addiction and fear/anxiety disorders. His work has been recognized internationally, and has been recently highlighted by several news agencies for groundbreaking work on pharmacotherapeutics for treatment of cocaine addiction. He serves as a grant reviewer for the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health, and as a reviewer for several journals in the fields of neuroscience and psychiatry. He is funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Research Growth Initiative. Dr. Cahill is interested in understanding the nature and treatment of anxiety and other emotional reactions to stress, such as anger reactions. He has a particular interest in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and panic in adults. His research program is focused on identifying therapeutic procedures that alleviate dysfunctional anxiety and other emotional reactions and understanding the psychological and biological mechanism that are responsible for the reduction of these reactions. As a Society for Neuroscience Chapter, one of our mandates is to lead activities for BAW centered around creating a "brain aware" public and inspiring educators and students to build the next stronger generation of neuroscientists locally. The WCSN is developing a sustainable plan for BAW that will see several events phased in over the next couple of years. For 2011, BAW activities in Winnipeg will center around a visit from renowned neurologist and neuroscientist, Dr. Jack Antel, from the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital. Dr. Antel specializes in the neuroimmunology of Multiple Sclerosis and will give a public lecture at St. Boniface Hospital Research Centre on March 16 and a research seminar at the Bannatyne Campus on March 17. Times will be announced soon. This announcement is meant to make you aware of the event and date. If you have itinerary suggestions/requests for Dr. Antel, please let me know at canderson(a)sbrc.ca as we are planning his time in Winnipeg now. We are also building an army of volunteers for BAW 2012 so we can hold several meaningful outreach events. Some people have indicated an interest but I am still looking for others. BAW and any WCSN outreach activities are only going to be as successful as the volunteer efforts we make as a group so please consider getting involved (email me at canderson(a)sbrc.ca ). The Manitoba Neuroscience Network represents neuroscientists from several campuses, seminars will therefore be distributed among the Bannatyne, St. Boniface and Fort Garry campuses, although most will be at Bannatyne. The spirit of our effort is to try to bring people together once a month. Therefore, we encourage you to travel to the site of each seminar. "Alberta cognitive neuroscientist looking for collaboration"

My name is Brea Chouinard and I am currently a PhD student at the University of Alberta (U of A). I am interested in neuroplasticity and the implications for speech and language therapies. Specifically, for my doctoral research I am going to be investigating a computer program developed around the principles of neuroplasticity and its effects on the language of typically aging adults and people with aphasia. A large part of this project entails functional and structural imaging. I will be collaborating with a speech and language therapist in Winnipeg and ideally, we would like all participants to undergo the same structural and neuroimaging assessment protocols. As such, I would like to know how to go about liaising with Magnetic Resonance Imaging at St. Boniface Hospital. My supervisor re: neuroimaging here at the U of A is Dr. Jacqueline Cummine (PhD Cognitive Neuroscience). We would like to begin the process of affiliating with your institution so that we can use your 1.5 Tesla research MRI for our data gathering. Would you please let me know of how to begin these procedures? The Winnipeg Chapter Society for Neuroscience <http://sfn-manitoba.ca/> is pleased to introduce the new Manitoba Neuroscience Network Seminar Series. Eight seminars are planned. They will be held the last Friday of each month, October thru May, during the second hour of Clinical Neuroscience Rounds. The Manitoba Neuroscience Network represents neuroscientists from several campuses, seminars will therefore be distributed among the Bannatyne, St. Boniface and Fort Garry campuses, although most will be at Bannatyne. The spirit of our effort is to try to bring people together once a month. Therefore, we encourage you to travel to the site of each seminar. However, seminars at St. Boniface and Fort Garry will be video-linked to Bannatyne for those who cannot travel. Please find attached the seminar schedule for 2010/2011. Dr. Bazinet's Biosketch: Dr. Bazinet received his BSc from the University of Western Ontario and completed his PhD under the supervision of Dr. Stephen Cunnane at the University of Toronto in 2003. Dr. Bazinet then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Dr. Stanley Rapoport's Brain Physiology and Metabolism Section at the National Institute on Aging where he examined the brain arachidonic acid cascade as a target of drugs used to treat bipolar disorder. Dr. Bazinet joined the University of Toronto in 2006, where he is currently an assistant professor. Dr. Bazinet is also the 2008 recipient of the Early Career Award from the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids as well as the 2010 recipient of the Jordi Folch-Pi award from the American Society for Neurochemistry. Dr. Bazinet sits on several editorial boards and is an Associate Editor for Senior Associate Editor of Lipids and in 2010 he became the Editor-in-Chief of Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids. The goal of Dr. Bazinet's research program is to identify the mechanisms that regulate brain lipid uptake and metabolism (signaling) and to identify the role of brain lipid metabolism in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases and neuropsychiatric disorders. Dr. Bazinet's group uses a combination of molecular biology, biochemistry and using kinetic approaches. September 17, 2010 Dear Manitoba Neuroscientists, The Winnipeg Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience is committed to improving the public's understanding of the brain and nervous system. We are currently in the process of designing a program of outreach activities that will maximize the value of the contributions we make. This includes formulating a plan for our participation in the International Brain Awareness Week. My feeling is that the best way to proceed is to assemble a committee of a few dedicated individuals who believe strongly in community outreach. The objective of that committee will be to formulate a cohesive outreach plan. All ideas are on the table and innovation is encouraged. If you have a strong belief in cultivating stronger public knowledge of neuroscience and possibly making a difference in the lives of young people, please contact me at canderson(a)sbrc.ca .
