SFN travel awards for trainees

Dear Manitoba Neuroscientists: Each year the Society for Neuroscience offers travel grants through its local Chapters. The Winnipeg Chapter is now accepting applications from graduate students and postdoctoral fellows for this competition. A Chapter committee will rank the applications and forward the top-ranked applications to the Society for Neuroscience for adjudication. In the past our Chapter has successfully attracted several of these awards so I encourage all trainees travelling to the SFN 2011 meeting to submit applications for travel funds. Boniface Research Centre Summary of Research: Dr. Albensi's lab is focused on understanding hippocampal dysfunction. Situated deep in the temporal lobe of the human brain, lays the hippocampal formation, a network of circuits unlike any other structure in the nervous system. The hippocampus is the site of many disease processes, but there are two diseases that stand out; those being Alzheimer's disease and epilepsy. To this end, he has investigated the biological basis of memory impairment and alterations in neuronal excitability (eg., seizures) in the hippocampus caused by calcium overload and alterations in NF-kB signaling. He has developed several animal models to explore both novel mechanisms and novel therapies for treatment of those diseases. His methods include, electrophysiology, calcium imaging, behavioral tests, MRI, and standard cell and molecular assays. CAN Annual Meeting - travel funds available

Dear Neuroscientists, The Canadian Association for Neuroscience (CAN) will be holding its 5th Annual Meeting May 29 to June 1 at the Québec City Convention Centre. While there are many options for our travel dollars, the CAN meeting has proven to be a useful conference of manageable size that brings together the best Canadian Neuroscientists. The meeting chair this year is Dr. Yves De Koninck and he has put together a very good program (www.canmeeting.ca). I encourage as many Manitobans as possible to attend this meeting. Several of us have been making an effort to showcase neuroscience in our province at this meeting since the first one but we need to do more. STUDENT TRAVEL FUNDS AVAILABLE: The CAN Secretary has informed me that significant travel funds are available for trainees (students and postdoctoral fellows) to travel to the 2011 CAN meeting provided local matching funds are available. Stakeholder academic departments and research institutes are committed to finding matching funds for trainees wishing to capitalize on this opportunity. Canadian Society for Brain, Behavior and Cognitive Science Meeting, June 24-26, 2011

The Annual Canadian Society for Brain, Behaviour and Cognitive Science Meeting will be held in Winnipeg at the Fort Garry Campus June 24-26, 2011. This meeting attracts visitors from all over Canada, as well as locations from around the world. The Canadian Society for Brain, Behaviour and Cognitive Science (CSBBCS) is a non-profit organization whose primary function is to advance Canadian research in experimental psychology and behavioural neuroscience.
