Hi all,
This came up briefly at the last meeting, but we never got back to it. The Riley grant from the U of Winnipeg, which has to be spent on events open to the public, is going to be directed to three events in the conference: the Wednesday evening panel on commemoration, the Thursday evening event at the Ukrainian Labour Temple with the keynote, and the Saturday afternoon bus tours.
We need to figure out how to advertise these events, and what it means for our planning.
A prime audience for the wednesday evening are the folks who are attending the series at the Library. Can we produce a leaflet (Krishna) for them? Where else can we advertise it. This is a potentially useful thing, because we may attract people who decide to register and stay for the conference. The Wednesday event could be quite popular, which raises another issue. Two small things. As i suggested, we need to be careful about advertising the bus tours, so we shouldn’t include them on any such leaflet.
And I wouldn’t advertise the Riley bits on the webpage. I think that’s generally confusing. I think simply pointing out what’s open to the public (as we do) is sufficient.

Paul and I will be seeing Kevin this morning and will ask about special promotion of the open events. I'm sure they will be happy to do this. We will need a promotional blurb from Krishna. We could use copies of this at all other events (not just the library.)
Krishna did provide us with a flyer for the overall conference already, and we have been plugging it. We may need more copies.

Sharon, if you and everyone is fine with the design and messaging I developed for the library event (see attached), I can print more of these as discussed at last Saturday's meeting. OR, if you want me to refine the focus on maybe the three roundtables or Jane's Keynote or something else, I can do that, too.
I do have a series of PR things that I would like to make, which are as follows:
1. Ad rate sheet (Paul, I will get this to you in support of our conference program; sorry for the delays) 2. General poster (11" x 17") including registration info. 3. Poster re: Jane (11" x 17") 4. Poster re: Good Will (11" x 17") 5. Poster re: Fight for 15/X-Cues (11" x 17") 6. Poster re: Bus Tour (11" x 17")
Obviously, items 2-6 will be included within the program guide itself, but it would be good to advertise at locations throughout the city -- and certainly at UW, UM and Brandon. We will definitely cross-promote with Good Will and X-cues.
I also think that posters/events 3-6 should be advertised on social media as specific, individual event pages, produced as coming from our main FB page. Once we fix on the specifics of these (we're pretty much done re: Jane's event at the UKL, yes?), I'll create.
Note, too, that the MFL is currently running an ad in its 2nd newsletter alongside a brief piece from Jim Naylor (see attached). What's more, I've created and supplied a free full page ad to MFL for their program guide (also see attached).
That's it for now! Two giant work events for me tomorrow, followed by the NDP Winnipeg Centre Fed nomination meeting on Sunday, but I will circle back with you all on Sunday eve.

P.S. I spoke with Jane at length a couple days back and I have all her needs re: flights (departures/arrivals, etc.). She'll be coming from San Francisco on May 8th and returning there on May 14th. This is a potentially useful thing, because we may attract people who decide to register and stay for the conference. The Wednesday event could be quite popular, which raises another issue. I am keeping an eye on registrations and was going to report immediately after early bird registration ends April 1. But this event may attract a significant number of other people which suggests that we may already know that Convocation Hall isn’t large enough. Janis: you may want to report this to the event planning people. I will get back to you when registration itself hits 200, but we should let them know that we are planning and event that isn’t limited to registrants.
For Thursday evening, our main audiences will be accessed through the MFL and Labour Council. Sharon and Jeff can talk to the MFL about this? Perhaps we could quickly make an announcement to put in the next 1919 newsletter? And there may be some affiliates who are particularly interested in McAlevey. Who organized her last visit to the labour council?
Finally, we need to be careful about the bus tours. If we throw it open, we could be swamped and our delegates wouldn’t be able to get on the bus. I’m going to suggest that we have a signup sheet, or print tickets. If our delegates want to go, they can sign up. And we can announce at the conference that they can bring friends and family, but they have to sign them up. And we can allow people who attended the Wednesday and/or Thursday evening events (from the “public”) to sign up as well. This way it’s open, but not out of control And we’ll have a list and can adjust the number of busses.

The Riley grant from the U of Winnipeg, which has to be spent on events open to the public, is going to be directed to three events in the conference: the Wednesday evening panel on commemoration, the Thursday evening event at the Ukrainian Labour Temple with the keynote, and the Saturday afternoon bus tours.
