Hello friends of CEL and the Social Justice Hub, Will you join us for this event, and/or help us promote it within your student networks? This special opportunity will benefit any UM student who is passionate about advancing social justice, equity, and anti-oppression on campus. If you know student leaders, whether they are involved in student government, student groups, or simply taking active care of their community members on campus, please share this event with them. "Pathways for Institutional Change at the UM" * What: An educational event for students who have ideas for changes that would advance equity at the UM and want advice on how to navigate the university's complex structure as advocates. * When and Where: Friday, February 27th, 1-2:30pm, Room 108 - Drake Centre * Why attend: Gather with progressive student leaders to share knowledge and build community connections. The Social Justice Hub presents: Pathways for Institutional Change at the UM with Vice-Provost (Equity) Tina Chen and Vice-Provost (Students) Laurie Schnarr. February 27th from 1-2:30pm Room 108, Drake Centre * Students leading change must navigate a daunting institutional landscape, often learning through trial and error which figures on campus make decisions about what in order to see their campaigns succeed. Hi Everyone, I hope everyone had a wonderful start to the new year and the first couple of weeks have been a time for new motivations, inspirations, and actions! CEL has been busy gearing up with some upcoming programming, for both our core programs as well as drop in. Read on to learn more about what we have been up to, and what's coming! Social Justice Hub (SJH) Now in its second year, the Social Justice Hub is establishing itself as the go-to site for students, staff, and faculty who are passionate about social justice work. Here are a few ways to get involved! (Also see attached posters) Monthly Drop-ins: From 12 – 1:30pm on the last* Tuesday of the month (unless otherwise noted*), bring your lunch and questions and join us for lightly facilitated conversations. These events bring together UM students, staff, and faculty to process the political moment, learn about social justice issues, workshop ideas for projects or initiatives, and meet people to collaborate with. January 2026 started off with our Winter Orientation event where we made Moose Meat Stew and Bannock! Our next event is coming up soon, Feather Dressing! We will be getting together on January 20th, in Migizii Agamik from 3:30pm - 6pm to learn all about feathers and how to dress them for ceremony. We will also be joined by a special animal guest to help us see feathers in action at the source! This drop-in is open to Indigenous students, staff, faculty, and community members, as well as global Indigenous folks. Poverty Awareness and Community Action (PACA) PACA has just finished wrapping up our workshops this month, with the last two of the 2025-2026 academic year happening with the Faculty of Nursing. We had future healthcare professionals learn from our lived experience educators (LEEs) through small group activities, where they developed a felt understanding of the social injustices that are experienced at the intersections of poverty and discrimination. Students reflected on their roles as professionals, their responsibilities for advocacy, and discussed barriers and solutions to bring about individual and systemic change. To support the LEEs with their work, our Support Circle advocates have been working together to identify and navigate various community resources. Through experiential learning, the students are not only developing research and communication skills, they are also developing a sense of working with communities in trauma-informed ways. Great teamwork is essential when working together, and to strengthen relationships through shared problem-solving, the Support Circle rang in the new year with a day of Escape Room adventures in January. Hi Everyone, Hope you are all doing well! We are full steam ahead with most of our programs here at Community Engaged Learning, and wanted to share what's happening this month! Social Justice Hub November Drop-In On Tuesday November 25th, join the Social Justice Hub for our monthly drop-in! If you're looking for a friendly place to meet community on campus who care about social justice, bring your lunch and come ready to discuss the issues of the day. The drop-ins are a casual space to process the political moment, brainstorm ideas and initiatives, and recruit for your organizing efforts. Last month, we had an exciting conversation about housing as a human right; applying a justice lens to economic policy; UBI vs. Universal Basic Services, and justice for International students with regard to barriers post-graduation. Land and Water Our L&W events are now open to all Indigenous students, staff, faculty, and community members. On Nov 25th, Tuesday, we will host a Fire making workshop, 4pm-6pm (outdoors) On Dec 13th, Saturday, we will host a Fish Filleting and Fish Fry workshop at Migizii Agamik, 2pm-5pm. Participants completed a 5-week training series last week, and are now actively doing advocacy work with four Lived Experience Educators (LEEs), who are dedicating their time and knowledge to support hands-on learning. Hello! We are excited to share some upcoming programs at Community Engaged Learning. We are starting Fall intakes for two experiential learning programs at CEL - Poverty Awareness and Community Action (PACA) and Land and Water (L&W). There is a L&W Walk and Talk happening in October. Poverty Awareness and Community Action This staff-facilitated program brings together students and community members to learn, train, and work alongside Lived Experience Educators (LEEs). LEEs are individuals who have firsthand experience with poverty and social challenges. Through weekly meetings and advocacy activities, participants will develop skills in trauma-informed support, resource navigation, and collaborative problem-solving, while building meaningful connections. Commitment: October 2025-April 2026 Wednesday evenings 6-9 pm, in person and online; weekly advocacy meetings and related research/communication. * This program is free and open to all UM students, staff, faculty and members of the wider community who are interested in advocacy work. Walk and Talks are Indigenous Land-Based tours of the Fort Garry campus, where we take the time to explore the Indigenous art and placemaking at the University, in addition to the history of the land we are on prior to its’ (the University) establishment. These tours are open to anyone who is interested in learning more about the history of Indigeneity at our University. The Community Leadership Development Program (CLDP) supports marginalized, minoritized, and under-represented students by providing funding, mentorship, and training in community-building. Grants are available through the Grow Your Community Fund to support regular and ongoing, or one time, community building initiatives with funding ranging from $500 to $3000. Teams will participate in weekly evening training sessions and take away tangible skills and tools that can be used directly to implement community building events, while also learning how to work in ways informed by anti-oppression and EDIA values. Community Engaged Learning (CEL) is launching the 2025-26 Community Leadership Development Program and Grow Your Community Fund<https://umanitoba.ca/student-supports/student-affairs/grow-your-community-f…>. The Community Leadership Development Program (CLDP) supports marginalized, minoritized, and underrepresented students in taking on community leadership roles through experiential training and opportunities to engage, organize, and facilitate events for their communities. Taanishi! Applications are open for Community Engaged Learning's global learning opportunity, Belize: Indigenous Land-Based Foodways! Please share this opportunity with UM Indigenous undergraduate students. Belize: Indigenous Land-Based Foodways invites First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students from the UM on a 9-day global Indigenous learning opportunity with a Maya community in Belize! We encourage you to apply if you are interested in visiting with Maya community members and learning about the intersections of food with culture, land, and people. We will spend time with Maya elders and knowledge holders learning about traditional foods, forest farming practices, cooking techniques, and land-based practices. There is an information session on Thursday, November 21, 10-11am in the Circle Room at Migizii Agamik, featuring Maya scholar, Dr. Filiberto Penados. All are welcome! Program participants will gain travel experience and be immersed in group learning in the Q’eqchi’ Maya community of Laguna, Belize. The program includes a December orientation session, weekly training in January and February, the travel period from February 14-22, 2025, and debrief meetings in March. This project is funded by Global Skills Opportunity, the Government of Canada’s outbound mobility pilot program and the CEL Travel Bursary. To be eligible for this program you must be Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, or Inuit), currently be a UM undergraduate student, have limited travel experience, have a Canadian passport, and be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Community Engaged Learning will be running two program opportunities through the summer! PACA: Support Circle Wednesdays, June 5 to August 28, 6pm Apply by June 1!<https://forms.office.com/r/4LvqS7XseK> PACA: Support Circle provides wrap-around supports for Lived Experience Educators who volunteer with Poverty Awareness & Community Action, including education and training, individual advocacy support, and social advocacy work. Joining the PACA: Support Circle is an opportunity to learn how to work in good ways with low-income communities. Support Circle volunteers receive poverty awareness education and peer advocacy training, so that they can appropriately develop resources, provide advocacy support, and work with people who face poverty and other intersecting oppressions. Summer Term programming will begin with a three-hour in-person program orientation on Wednesday, June 5 from 6-9 p.m. After the orientation, PACA meets online weekly on Wednesdays from 6-7 p.m. We will also have three additional in-person meetings on July 3, July 31, and August 28 that will run from 6-9 p.m. The longer meetings give us the chance to spend time together and learn more complex things! Community Engaged Learning is back with our next opportunity to learn about community work! This month, we are hosting an in-person workshop on police abolition with WPCH, a community-centred police abolitionist group committed to defunding the Winnipeg Police Service and reallocating resources to life-sustaining services. The movement to imagine and create a world without the police is a longstanding and ongoing struggle. Year after year, we see the high rates of police violence against Black, Indigenous, racialized, and other marginalized communities. Interactions with the police should not be a death sentence. In this workshop, we will work together to address common questions related to police abolition: - What does a world without policing look like in practice? - What is “crime” and its root causes? - What is the difference between police reform and police abolition?
