Recruiting Volunteer Advocates for Fall 2026-27
by Saira Sheikh 08 Sep '26

08 Sep '26

Hello, We hope you’re doing well! As we get ready for another year of Poverty Awareness and Community Action (PACA), we’re reaching out to members of the CEL community who have been connected with PACA in the past. We’re currently recruiting Volunteer Advocates for the 2026–27 academic year, and we’d love to welcome anyone who is interested in getting involved with PACA this year. Last year, PACA brought Student Advocates and Lived Experience Experts (LEEs) together through both learning and social programming. Students learned about resources and supports such as EIA, CNIB, community mental health services, mobility-related resources, and the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), while building practical skills in communication, de-escalation, relationship-building, and trauma-informed approaches to support. We also made plenty of room for connection and fun through activities like coffee outings, movie nights, a beach day, and an escape room. Whether you’ve previously participated as a Volunteer Advocate, or been involved with CEL in another capacity, we’d be happy to have you reconnect with us and continue being part of the PACA community. Applications are open until September 25, 2026. Application form link - PACA Support Circle 2026-27 - Application Form – Fill out form<https://forms.cloud.microsoft/r/2fyKMYkfU5> We’d love to hear from you! Invite: Sept 9 - Community-Led Advocacy Workshop
by Mandalyn Unger 03 Sep '26

03 Sep '26

Hello friends of Social Justice Hub! This invitation is meant for you, either to attend yourself or to share with students you're in relationship with, who might be a good fit. SJH is offering a workshop on Wednesday Sept 9th, from 2-4pm, in CEL (203-55 Chancellor's Circle): Community-Led Advocacy Campaigns (From Problems to Solutions) At the Students Leading Change conference, something I heard from student leaders over and over was that it's hard to get students engaged with the issues they're trying to tackle - it seems like students just don't care! My troubling thought for them was: if you have to convince students to care, it's the wrong issue. So... how do you figure out what the right issue is? Workshop Description "Listen to community" is advice that leaders, advocates, and change-makers are often given - but how do you actually do that and do it well? This 2hr in-person workshop will explore what it means to advocate not just for your community, but with your community, through the lens of community-engaged change work. Learners will gain theory and practical tools for a more effective approach based in community organizing principles. Expect a participatory session, with ample time spent in discussion and group work so you can leave with a plan. Topics will include: power and theories of change; defining advocacy; and a guide for planning an advocacy campaign. Register here!<https://forms.cloud.microsoft/r/wswPhtkchB> If you have any questions, please reach out to the facilitator, mandalyn.unger(a)umanitoba.ca Directions to CEL can be found under "Access Information" on our website<http://umanitoba.ca/community-engaged-learning/social-justice-hub>. Mandalyn Unger (they/she) Coordinator, Social Justice Hub Community Engaged Learning Please note I work an atypical 28 hr/week and am not available on Tuesdays or Wednesday mornings. Land and Water Program [cid:b7029103-55b0-4f64-bada-641a098ad80a] Land & Water is back in full swing after the holidays! January 2026 started off with our Winter Orientation event where we made Moose Meat Stew and Bannock! Our next event is coming up soon, Feather Dressing! We will be getting together on January 20th, in Migizii Agamik from 3:30pm - 6pm to learn all about feathers and how to dress them for ceremony. We will also be joined by a special animal guest to help us see feathers in action at the source! This drop-in is open to Indigenous students, staff, faculty, and community members, as well as global Indigenous folks. If this sounds like something of interest to you, please contact em.tardiffbreen(a)umanitoba.ca to register. Poverty Awareness and Community Action (PACA) PACA has just finished wrapping up our workshops this month, with the last two of the 2025-2026 academic year happening with the Faculty of Nursing. We had future healthcare professionals learn from our lived experience educators (LEEs) through small group activities, where they developed a felt understanding of the social injustices that are experienced at the intersections of poverty and discrimination. Students reflected on their roles as professionals, their responsibilities for advocacy, and discussed barriers and solutions to bring about individual and systemic change. To support the LEEs with their work, our Support Circle advocates have been working together to identify and navigate various community resources. Through experiential learning, the students are not only developing research and communication skills, they are also developing a sense of working with communities in trauma-informed ways. Great teamwork is essential when working together, and to strengthen relationships through shared problem-solving, the Support Circle rang in the new year with a day of Escape Room adventures in January. The next intake of the PACA Support Circle will be in Fall 2026! If you are interested in getting involved, please keep an eye on our newsletter and Instagram! [CEL-Mailing-List] You're Invited: This Wednesday May 28! The Revolution Will Not Be Funded
by Mandalyn Unger 23 May '25

23 May '25

Hello everyone, This month’s Social Justice Hub drop-in will be hosted by the Anti-Xenophobia student group. Participants are invited to discuss the issues raised in The Revolution Will Not Be Funded, a book by 'INCITE! Women of Color Against Violence' about the impacts of the nonprofit sector on social justice movements. Register to receive an excerpt from the book to read in advance. Registration link: Book club RSVP forms<https://forms.cloud.microsoft/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=C92AT4wzTE6KFJBEaW…> WHEN: Wednesday May 28th from 6-7:30pm WHERE: Zoom Meeting Link: https://rb.gy/031eoa Meeting ID: 688 5788 1985 Passcode: 779744 Folks who don't register in advance are also welcome to drop-in! HOW TO GET INVOLVED: The Students co-hosting this month's event are curious as to whether there is appetite for a book club to read through and discuss this text further so if you can't attend but would be interested in that opportunity, please reach out to let us know! Some discussion questions to consider ahead of time: * How have you routed your community organizing through non-profits? * How do non-profits impact capacity for community work? * Are there benefits to community work happening in non-profits as opposed to grassroots people's organizations? * What do we stand to gain from organizing outside of the non-profit industrial complex? Apologies for the late notice on this one but we hope with such a topical and important issue we'll see some of you there! Take care, Mandalyn

[Cel-newsletter] CEL Newsletter: Upcoming workshop on Police Abolition (Tue Feb 13, 4-6pm)
by Anny Chen 05 Feb '24

05 Feb '24

Community Engaged Learning is back with our next opportunity to learn about community work! This month, we are hosting an in-person workshop on police abolition with WPCH, a community-centred police abolitionist group committed to defunding the Winnipeg Police Service and reallocating resources to life-sustaining services. The movement to imagine and create a world without the police is a longstanding and ongoing struggle. Year after year, we see the high rates of police violence against Black, Indigenous, racialized, and other marginalized communities. Interactions with the police should not be a death sentence. In this workshop, we will work together to address common questions related to police abolition: - What does a world without policing look like in practice? - What is “crime” and its root causes? - What is the difference between police reform and police abolition? Event Info Date: Tuesday, February 13 Time: 4:00-6:00 p.m. Location: Fort Garry campus - More directions will be provided after registration! Please register by February 12.<https://forms.office.com/r/V1D7MeNRrp> This workshop is free and open to UM students and their friends and family. A light meal / snacks will be provided. We will try to accommodate dietary restrictions for people who register by February 9.
