Upcoming CEL Events International Student Health Hub Huddle (Ih3) Friday, March 15, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. 193 Extended Education, Fort Garry campus IH3, as part of the Community Leadership Development Program, invites you to embark on an informative wellness journey focusing on health coverage and benefits for international students. This event is organized by international students, for international students (and friends)! The event will feature an insightful presentation about your UMSU Health & Dental and Manitoba International Student Health Plan (MISHP). Participants can expect to engage in a meaningful Q&A session, followed by an open forum to share, connect, and reflect on community connection and reflection. Community Engaged Learning has two upcoming events! Fire Building Workshop – Sat Mar 2, 1-4pm (for Indigenous community) Land and Water invites the Indigenous community to join us for our fire-building workshop this Saturday. Together we will learn from UM sweat lodge helpers about fire-building, play some Indigenous traditional games, and make some food on the fire. This workshop will take place on the Fort Garry campus and is free and open to Indigenous students, staff, and faculty and Indigenous community members from outside the university. We’re looking for 20 volunteers to join us next Saturday at our upcoming community event with Forward House, a second stage transitional housing program for the men who have experienced incarceration, addictions, mental health issues, homelessness and poverty. Community Engaged Learning is back with our next opportunity to learn about community work! This month, we are hosting an in-person workshop on police abolition with WPCH, a community-centred police abolitionist group committed to defunding the Winnipeg Police Service and reallocating resources to life-sustaining services. The movement to imagine and create a world without the police is a longstanding and ongoing struggle. Year after year, we see the high rates of police violence against Black, Indigenous, racialized, and other marginalized communities. Interactions with the police should not be a death sentence. In this workshop, we will work together to address common questions related to police abolition: - What does a world without policing look like in practice? - What is “crime” and its root causes? - What is the difference between police reform and police abolition?
