Ervin Bighetty and Chris Brayley both took part in gardening programs as youth, which helped them grow as leaders and friends and led to many projects and initiatives to support their community. Ervin Bighetty is currently headman of Pickerel Narrows First Nation and on the board of Pickerel Narrows Community Association. Ervin is currently focused on advocating for Pickerel Narrows and bringing food resources into town. Chris Brayley is Cree with ties to Brochet, MB, and is the Public Works Town Foreman and Volunteer Fire Chief in Leaf Rapids. Chris leads a team of volunteer firefighters and uses it as an opportunity for youth leadership development. Mr. Donisio Shol is part of the Julian Cho Society<https://www.jcsbelize.org/pages/home.php>, a non-governmental organization devoted to indigenous rights through research, education, and advocacy in southern Belize. The Society is dedicated to increasing understanding of the history and indigenous cultures of the Toledo District of Belize. We aim to carry forward the legacy of Julian Armando Cho through programs that promote education, justice, and sustainable development. Ms. Gloria Coc is part of the Laguna Eco-Adventure Guesthouse<https://www.facebook.com/LEAGueasthouse/>, which offers an eco-friendly cultural experience, allowing guests to be immersed in a traditional Maya village in the green tranquility of Laguna. We hope you'll join us for the final teach-in of Winter term: Student Experiences of Advocacy Tues Mar 31, 12 - 1:30pm 203-55 Chancellors Circle - Community Engaged Learning office Register to get an event reminder!<https://forms.office.com/r/c86nvgASj8> This will be an opportunity to hear from students who have worked with the university to make change on campus and discuss what worked; what didn’t; what barriers they faced; and what changes could be made so students can more easily impact the policies and procedures that shape their university experience! What to expect: * The first 15 minutes will be for participants to arrive, sign-in, get comfortable, and introduced to each other * The next 45 minutes will be a presentation delivered in a casual setting of sitting in a circle * The following 45 minutes will be participatory discussion with time dedicated to question and answer or activities to engage participants in dialogue. * There will be no formal break so you are encouraged to move around the space and take additional breaks as needed These teach-ins are a casual, conversational space for knowledge exchange. Feel free to bring your lunch, and drop-in even if you can't be there the whole time! Space: * Lights: As much as possible, we will try to utilize natural and ambient lighting (rather than the overhead fluorescent lights). * Washrooms: We have a private, gender-inclusive washroom in our space, but it is not wheelchair accessible (the narrowest point in the bathroom is 27" and there is no grab bar). There is a single-stall "universal toilet room" down the hall from our office (216 - 55 Chancellor's Circle). The doorways into this bathroom are 33" wide, the height to the sink is 31", and there is a grab bar on the left side of the toilet. The doors and locks are not automated. * Room: Flooring throughout our space is level. There are tiles throughout, and a rubberized carpet mat at the entrance. Hi Everyone, I hope everyone had a wonderful start to the new year and the first couple of weeks have been a time for new motivations, inspirations, and actions! CEL has been busy gearing up with some upcoming programming, for both our core programs as well as drop in. Read on to learn more about what we have been up to, and what's coming! Social Justice Hub (SJH) Now in its second year, the Social Justice Hub is establishing itself as the go-to site for students, staff, and faculty who are passionate about social justice work. Here are a few ways to get involved! (Also see attached posters) Monthly Drop-ins: From 12 – 1:30pm on the last* Tuesday of the month (unless otherwise noted*), bring your lunch and questions and join us for lightly facilitated conversations. These events bring together UM students, staff, and faculty to process the political moment, learn about social justice issues, workshop ideas for projects or initiatives, and meet people to collaborate with. Fall Schedule: Sept 23* Oct 28 Nov 25 Dec 16* Masks will be provided, and air purifiers will be running. January 2026 started off with our Winter Orientation event where we made Moose Meat Stew and Bannock! Our next event is coming up soon, Feather Dressing! We will be getting together on January 20th, in Migizii Agamik from 3:30pm - 6pm to learn all about feathers and how to dress them for ceremony. We will also be joined by a special animal guest to help us see feathers in action at the source! This drop-in is open to Indigenous students, staff, faculty, and community members, as well as global Indigenous folks. Poverty Awareness and Community Action (PACA) PACA has just finished wrapping up our workshops this month, with the last two of the 2025-2026 academic year happening with the Faculty of Nursing. We had future healthcare professionals learn from our lived experience educators (LEEs) through small group activities, where they developed a felt understanding of the social injustices that are experienced at the intersections of poverty and discrimination. Students reflected on their roles as professionals, their responsibilities for advocacy, and discussed barriers and solutions to bring about individual and systemic change. To support the LEEs with their work, our Support Circle advocates have been working together to identify and navigate various community resources. Through experiential learning, the students are not only developing research and communication skills, they are also developing a sense of working with communities in trauma-informed ways. Great teamwork is essential when working together, and to strengthen relationships through shared problem-solving, the Support Circle rang in the new year with a day of Escape Room adventures in January. Hi everyone! Come for a free, soup lunch tomorrow, Tuesday Dec 16, and learn about how to run your own mutual aid projects. Social Justice Hub will have vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free soup options served hot from 12pm - 1:30pm in the CEL office, room 203, at 55 Chancellors Circle. Anny and Sanjana will host a teach-in on running lunch clubs and community catering. Take home an instructional zine and some extra soup if you bring a takeaway container! These drop-in events bring together UM students, staff, and faculty to process the political moment, learn about social justice issues, workshop ideas for projects or initiatives, and meet people to collaborate with. Fall Schedule: Sept 23* Oct 28 Nov 25 Dec 16* *Earlier dates to accommodate National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Winter Term Break. Location and Accessibility: Masks will be provided and air purifiers will be running. One room will be designated as mask-on, and all participants are asked to wear a well-fitting respirator when not eating.
