Recruiting Volunteer Advocates for Fall 2026-27
by Saira Sheikh 08 Sep '26

08 Sep '26

Hello, We hope you’re doing well! As we get ready for another year of Poverty Awareness and Community Action (PACA), we’re reaching out to members of the CEL community who have been connected with PACA in the past. We’re currently recruiting Volunteer Advocates for the 2026–27 academic year, and we’d love to welcome anyone who is interested in getting involved with PACA this year. Last year, PACA brought Student Advocates and Lived Experience Experts (LEEs) together through both learning and social programming. Students learned about resources and supports such as EIA, CNIB, community mental health services, mobility-related resources, and the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), while building practical skills in communication, de-escalation, relationship-building, and trauma-informed approaches to support. We also made plenty of room for connection and fun through activities like coffee outings, movie nights, a beach day, and an escape room. Whether you’ve previously participated as a Volunteer Advocate, or been involved with CEL in another capacity, we’d be happy to have you reconnect with us and continue being part of the PACA community. Applications are open until September 25, 2026. Application form link - PACA Support Circle 2026-27 - Application Form – Fill out form<https://forms.cloud.microsoft/r/2fyKMYkfU5> We’d love to hear from you! Invite: Sept 9 - Community-Led Advocacy Workshop
by Mandalyn Unger 03 Sep '26

03 Sep '26

Hello friends of Social Justice Hub! This invitation is meant for you, either to attend yourself or to share with students you're in relationship with, who might be a good fit. SJH is offering a workshop on Wednesday Sept 9th, from 2-4pm, in CEL (203-55 Chancellor's Circle): Community-Led Advocacy Campaigns (From Problems to Solutions) At the Students Leading Change conference, something I heard from student leaders over and over was that it's hard to get students engaged with the issues they're trying to tackle - it seems like students just don't care! My troubling thought for them was: if you have to convince students to care, it's the wrong issue. So... how do you figure out what the right issue is? Workshop Description "Listen to community" is advice that leaders, advocates, and change-makers are often given - but how do you actually do that and do it well? This 2hr in-person workshop will explore what it means to advocate not just for your community, but with your community, through the lens of community-engaged change work. Learners will gain theory and practical tools for a more effective approach based in community organizing principles. Expect a participatory session, with ample time spent in discussion and group work so you can leave with a plan. Topics will include: power and theories of change; defining advocacy; and a guide for planning an advocacy campaign. Register here!<https://forms.cloud.microsoft/r/wswPhtkchB> If you have any questions, please reach out to the facilitator, mandalyn.unger(a)umanitoba.ca Directions to CEL can be found under "Access Information" on our website<http://umanitoba.ca/community-engaged-learning/social-justice-hub>. Mandalyn Unger (they/she) Coordinator, Social Justice Hub Community Engaged Learning Please note I work an atypical 28 hr/week and am not available on Tuesdays or Wednesday mornings. Email replies during this period may be delayed. https://umanitoba.ca/community-engaged-learning/social-justice-hub Student Affairs – Leaders in cultivating exceptional student experiences!
