Statement of Support for 2SLGBTQIA+ rights from UM Faculty of Education

[cid:image002.png@01D9ECB3.0D38D5F0] Dear Faculty, Staff and Students, Recently, we have heard about rallies for which inclusivity of 2SLGBTQIA+ rights were challenged. As educators and administrators, we support inclusive schools and safe environments where everyone feels valued and respected. Rights such as those related to gender expression and gender identity are enshrined in the Canadian Human Rights Act, and it is our responsibility to respect these rights and advocate for those who are unfairly treated. We value diversity and we are committed to engaging in constructive conversations that work towards equity and inclusivity in all spaces. With education and respectful conversations, we will build a more equitable environment together. Educators have an essential role in promoting a culture of care and compassion and in helping students develop the skills and understandings they need to create a more just society. UM staff are available to help those who are affected by these difficult topics. We encourage members of our community to reach out to advisors in our faculty, or to staff and faculty in your department, who may assist and support you. Dear B.Ed & PBDE student, the beginning of the school year can be a stressful time with financial concerns the most stressful of all. Did you know the UM has means to help financially? All you have to do is apply. UM Bursaries applications are open. Complete your application (s) by Oct 1 to be eligible for many bursaries. The Learning Commons is a great space to study on your own, collaborate with others or take a break. Education students can also borrow books from the Canadian Children’s Book Collection stored in the Learning Commons by using the self-check-out machine or downloading the “Meescan” app. The Learning Commons is accessed by swiping your student ID card but you have to get your ID card encoded before it will work. A staff member will be in Room 200 to encode student cards at the following times: September 11 – 3:45pm to 5:30pm September 12 – 3:30pm to 5:30pm September 13 – 3:30pm to 5:30pm September 14 – 1:30pm to 3:00pm If you are unable to be there during these times, please visit the Physical Plant office at 79 Freedman Crescent to have your card encoded.
