The Neuroaffirming Cohort is a unique professional learning and mentorship experience, designed to help future teachers develop and strengthen their neuroinclusive teaching practices in practicum and for the K-12 classroom. Participation is limited to only 75 Bachelor of Education students, and spaces will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Why Apply? Neuroaffirming Cohort students will receive: · A $1,000 scholarship to use for classroom teaching materials · Specialised professional learning focused on neurodiversity and neuroinclusive educational practices · Collaborative group work and mentorship throughout practicum and workshops · A Certificate of Completion recognising focused professional learning in neuroinclusion. Be Ready Before Applications Open! Online Applications open Wednesday, September 2 at 12:00 a.m. (midnight Central Time). Sent by Joel McFarlane on behalf of Dr. Wayne Serebrin, Associate Dean - Undergraduate and Partnerships Good morning Students, Just a friendly reminder, and amendment, to our upcoming Orientation Day on September 1st. During the 2:15 to 3:00 pm time slot, you will have a choice of which session you wish to attend: 1. The CANU/CANU Education Academy Volunteer Program; Session 2: The Northern Practicum Information Session with Frontier School Division; Session 3: Hearing insights from a recent B.Ed. graduate and first year teacher. Additionally, our Communications team will be present over the lunch hour to capture the excitement of the day, and you may be approached to participate. Participation is optional. Crowd photos may be taken in public spaces outside of classrooms. As of now, you can all access the Orientation MS PowerPoint slides and schedule, alongside additional general important information and instructions via UM Learn – “Student Resources” – “Content”. This UM Learn module will be updated and used throughout your study journey. If you do not have access to this module, please contact Joel ASAP via adu.education(a)umanitoba.ca. We want to introduce two new initiatives within the Faculty: We will be emailing you shortly about our exciting, new Neuroaffirming professional education program for all B.Ed. students, as well as the opportunity to participate in a Neuroaffirming Cohort with additional mentoring and the possibility of a $1,000 dollar scholarship for the first, eligible 75 Year 1 and Year 2 students who apply by September 2nd (more details to follow this week). Also, this year we will be providing free copies (while copies last) of this year’s “Faculty Reads—Indigenous Authors’ Series” book Theory of Water: Nishnaabe Maps to the Times Ahead. Starting on September 1st, copies of this book will be available for pickup in room 203 Education (Student Services Office) for those students wishing to form a book club with program colleagues/friends. The author, Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, will be with us on Program Day, November 2nd. We have received a few emails with similar questions. Here is a FAQ list: Does the faculty have a Wi-Fi/paper sign in for Orientation Day? Yes to both. You can view the Wi-Fi information here<https://umanitoba.ca/information-services-technology/my-connections/wireles…>. We do have a preference for students signing in virtually via the QR code presented in each session, as this aligns with our Environmental Sustainability Plan. What if I cannot make it to Orientation? Please contact this email address immediately. What resources do we, as students, have access to/receive? Outside of on-campus facilities, students will have access to software - such as MS Office. You can find this on UM Learn – “Student Resources”, and the University's website. Will smudging be available in the morning? Yes, and you can participate in room 322 from 8:30 - 9:00 am. Welcome to the Faculty of Education! Orientation Day Information.

Students; I would like to take this opportunity to warmly welcome you to the Faculty of Education! We are excited to accompany you on your journey towards becoming a professional educator. As faculty and staff members, we look forward to getting to know you and to learning beside you as you pursue your teaching qualifications. I am writing today to provide you with information about the upcoming, mandatory Faculty of Education Orientation Day on Tuesday, September 1st. The purpose of the Orientation is to provide you with the opportunity to learn about the faculty-based program, the practicum, and to gain insight into becoming part of the teaching profession. Please see the attached schedule for the day. Coffee and Doughnuts/Danishes will be provided from 8:30 am to 9:20 am in the main hallway of the Faculty of Education building (see a link to the UM Fort Garry campus map here<https://maps.umanitoba.ca/> to locate the Education building if you are unfamiliar with the campus). Please arrive early so that you will have sufficient time to meet new colleagues, staff, and faculty and find your way to the room for your first session. Should you wish to smudge, we will provide you with an opportunity to do so in Gaa-maamawabing – Gathering Place (Room 322) prior to the time for checking-in. All students must be in their designated rooms and digitally checked in at 9:20 am. You will need a digital device to check in. The first session will begin precisely at 9:30 am. Slides for all sessions will be emailed to you prior to Orientation. However, you will need to bring what you need for taking notes. You will also need to bring a lunch for the 12:00 pm to 12:50 pm break. There is some limited microwave accessibility in the building. During the lunch break you may wish to explore the Faculty of Education building, the University of Manitoba Students’ Union building (where you will find the bookstore and many other services), or take a short walk on campus, and so on. We encourage you to also bring a water bottle with you. Immediately following Orientation, we will provide you with a link to ask any questions you may have. We will aim to address these questions as soon after Orientation as is possible. Please note that the Orientation Day is compulsory. The program is tailored to support your learning experiences in the Faculty of Education over the next few days of classes and in the practicum that begins the following week. As a professional school, we expect everyone to be fully present.
