Dear Year 1 B.Ed. Students;
I would like to take this opportunity to warmly welcome you to the Faculty of Education! We are excited to accompany you on your journey towards becoming a professional educator. As faculty and staff members, we look forward to getting to know you and to learning beside you as you pursue your teaching qualifications.
I am writing today to provide you with information about the upcoming, mandatory Faculty of Education Orientation Day on Tuesday, September 1st. The purpose of the Orientation is to provide you with the opportunity to learn about the faculty-based program, the practicum, and to gain insight into becoming part of the teaching profession.
Please see the attached schedule for the day. Coffee and Doughnuts/Danishes will be provided from 8:30 am to 9:20 am in the main hallway of the Faculty of Education building (see a link to the UM Fort Garry campus map herehttps://maps.umanitoba.ca/ to locate the Education building if you are unfamiliar with the campus). Please arrive early so that you will have sufficient time to meet new colleagues, staff, and faculty and find your way to the room for your first session.
Should you wish to smudge, we will provide you with an opportunity to do so in Gaa-maamawabing – Gathering Place (Room 322) prior to the time for checking-in.
All students must be in their designated rooms and digitally checked in at 9:20 am. You will need a digital device to check in. The first session will begin precisely at 9:30 am.
Slides for all sessions will be emailed to you prior to Orientation. However, you will need to bring what you need for taking notes. You will also need to bring a lunch for the 12:00 pm to 12:50 pm break. There is some limited microwave accessibility in the building. During the lunch break you may wish to explore the Faculty of Education building, the University of Manitoba Students’ Union building (where you will find the bookstore and many other services), or take a short walk on campus, and so on. We encourage you to also bring a water bottle with you.
Immediately following Orientation, we will provide you with a link to ask any questions you may have. We will aim to address these questions as soon after Orientation as is possible.
Please note that the Orientation Day is compulsory. The program is tailored to support your learning experiences in the Faculty of Education over the next few days of classes and in the practicum that begins the following week. As a professional school, we expect everyone to be fully present.
