Your attendance is encouraged if you are in a Winnipeg placement as it is a good opportunity to meet and interact with FHNS faculty, staff and students. If you rsvp to attend, please let us know and we will send a request to your preceptor to dismiss you from placement at 3pm that day to attend the event. You will only be dismissed early from placement if you are attending the event. We are also looking for two students to help us at a booth at the event. Please ensure that you have activated your MFA on the provincial external webmail (outlook web access). This change will require enrollment and use of the Microsoft Authenticator application on a smart device by any user who wants to use Outlook Web Access, and will have impacts on other application usage (e.g., MS Teams) once the action is completed. Dear Students, Please read this e-mail carefully. It contains important information about the first week of the MAHN program. The MAHN program orientation schedule is attached. Attendance at all events during MAHN orientation are mandatory including the FHNS graduate studies orientation on Monday morning. You are required to attend all sessions, to arrive on time and to remain for the entre session/day as per the orientation schedule. During our introductory meetings in May, some of you indicated an interest in receiving readings ahead of time to start preparing for the MAHN program. Attached is a list of readings that must be completed by Sunday September 8. If you wish, you can complete the readings before the program starts. You will be required to complete a quiz on the attached readings. That quiz will be available to you starting orientation week. The first few weeks of the program are intense with a lot of assigned readings and new information. Sunday September 15 will be the due date to complete the Dietitians of Canada "Swallow Screen and Assessment Course". This course will take 5 to 6 hours to complete and will be available at no cost to you. If you are not satisfied with your grade for this course and wish to do a rewrite you may do so at your own expense. This course counts toward 2.5% of your grade for HNSC 7700. We expect to obtain the registration code for the course from Dietitians of Canada soon and will share it with you via e-mail as soon as we have it. You can work ahead on this assignment if you choose. Be sure to retain your certificate of completion as you will be required to submit the certificate on UM learn by September 15. At this time, all student communication related to the MAHN program must be directed to MAHN.info(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:MAHN.info@umanitoba.ca> . The MAHN Program Assistant will direct the e-mail to the appropriate person for response. E-mails sent directly to the MAHN Coordinator or MAHN Preceptor Liaison will not be responded to. We receive numerous e-mails each day and having the MAHN Program Assistant manage, and triage e-mails helps to ensure e-mails are not missed. Required Materials for the Practicum Courses (7700, 7710 and 7720): * A printed copy of the WRHA Clinical Nutrition Handbook pdf. We have printed copies available for purchase at the UM Bookstore for $17.50+ tax. If you prefer to print your own copy, a PDF version of the handbook will be available on the UM Learn 7700 course page which will be available starting orientation week. A printed copy of the handbook is required for Nutrition Refresher week, experiential learning weeks and all nutrition care placements. * A scientific calculator is required for Nutrition Refresher week, experiential learning weeks and all nutrition care placements. * A 3-ring binder is required for orientation, nutrition refresher week, experiential learning weeks and all placements. Mr. Pugh received his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree from the Faculty of Agriculture and Home Economics in 1940. The purpose of this award is to defray travel-related costs for diploma, undergraduate and graduate students. MAHN rural travel subsidy

Dear MAHN Students, Dr. Myrie and I have been successful in applying for and securing endowment funds to support some of the costs of mileage for your rural travel. If you drove to a rural placement (defined as a rural designated placement outside of the Winnipeg perimeter) and you have not been fully reimbursed for mileage through other means you are eligible to submit a claim for reimbursement. All students that have mileage expenses that have not been reimbursed through other means will receive a subsidy from the endowment fund up to a maximum of $400. We recognize that this may not cover all mileage or other expenses during rural placement. If you have remaining travel expenses after this reimbursement you may consider applying for a Stewart Pugh travel award<https://ui-webapps.ad.umanitoba.ca/searchableAwards/searchForm/awardDetails…>. You are eligible for this award even if the travel is already completed. Eligibility and directions for the MAHN travel subsidy: 1. The claim is specifically for travel to a placement outside of the Winnipeg perimeter for a rural designated placement (contact MAHN.info(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:MAHN.info@umanitoba.ca> if you are not certain whether your placement was a rural designated placement). 2. You must not have received reimbursement from other sources for the mileage claimed. 3. Travel can only be claimed once. Students shall receive a maximum of $400 in total (not per rural placement). 5. We will not be issuing reminders, and we will not accept claims submitted to any other e-mail address. 6. Mileage rate is $0.50 per kilometer. Wrap up week-update

Hi Everyone, Thank you for all your great suggestions for wrap up week. I will send a more detailed agenda soon but, in the meantime, here is a general overview of the week. Monday: You will have your courses as usual, with your research presentations during the afternoon course. Tuesday and Wednesday: You will have these two days off. Thursday: This will be a full day 9am to 4pm of in-class wrap up. Attendance is mandatory and counts toward practicum hours. You are expected to arrive on time. We will cover the following topics suggested by students (if I have missed your suggestion, please let me know. I have been receiving a high volume of emails lately and I may have missed it.) * Further discussion regarding the CDRE exam (we will be bringing in a preceptor that recently wrote the exam to talk about their experience). * A review of next steps after graduation (registration with CDM, registration for CDRE etc.) * An overview of the process for CDM continuing competency requirements including goal setting * A discussion regarding continuing education opportunities and resources. We will also discuss various listservs and RD groups that might be worth joining. * Time to complete the MAHN student exit evaluation through Survey Monkey. * Katrina and I will be bringing a cake for us to have a mini celebration toward the end of day Thursday. Friday: The end of the year celebration will be held from 11am to 1:30pm. Attendance is mandatory. This updated policy is currently only effective within the WRHA. If you are doing your PSE in other health regions, you will need to follow the policy of that health region, not the WRHA updated policy. If you are in another region for PSE, please confirm with your preceptor at the time of your placement as the policy may or may not change for the other regions within the next few weeks. They have offered to treat the MAHN students to supper at a nearby restaurant after our sessions that day. They are waiting to determine interest before selecting the restaurant. An Exploration of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA) in Nutrition Research and Practice Network: Diabetes, Obesity & Cardiovascular Date: April 9, 2024 Time: 11:00 AM Central Time Historically, the constructs of inclusion, diversity, equity, and access (IDEA) have not been sufficiently considered or included throughout the research process in nutrition research and practice, despite recent attempts to describe under-reported groups. Consequently, nutrition assessment benchmarks and knowledge translation tools may not accurately or adequately reflect diversity in the Canadian population, or produce meaningful dietary guidance, respectively. Camp Briardale, the Diabetes Canada overnight camp for children living with type 1 diabetes is looking for healthcare students and registered dieticians to attend a one-week camp in August 19-23, 2024. There will be a training day before camp. Camp is a great experience – you will learn lots and have fun at the same time! We do not expect you to have any experience with type 1 diabetes, we will teach you what you need to know. Coming to camp gives you the opportunity to learn the basics of management of type 1 diabetes but more importantly will give you insight into what it is like for a child to live with a chronic illness that requires constant attention. And Camp experience is also not necessary – this is a great opportunity to go back to camp if you have been in the past and an even better opportunity to go to overnight camp if you never had the chance as a kid! The 2 positions that are available for health care students are “Medical Counsellor” and “Midnight Rambler ”. Nutrition students who will have completed their practicum are invited to apply for the “Dietitian“ position (if you are a graduate dietitian). Each cabin group has a medical counsellor who helps organize blood glucose checks, insulin doses etc. In addition, they also act as a general counsellor – living with a cabin group, going to and participating in all activities etc. (Don’t worry – there are experienced camp counsellors as part of the team). Midnight ramblers help check glucose values through the night – and after sleeping in in the morning are welcome to join in with camp activities. I am happy to be back, and I am delighted to inform you that Katrina is now with the MAHN program full-time as the Preceptor Liaison Dietitian. Katrina's primary role will be placement planning and preceptor support. Your course instructors and I will remain your primary contacts within the program and please be sure to include MAHN.info(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:MAHN.info@umanitoba.ca> in all communications to me. Please see below for important updates and reminders for this week. * There have been some updates to placement and preceptors due to changes in preceptor availability. Please be sure to access the "live" version of your placement schedule in Typhon before contacting your next preceptors. * By Friday December 22, send a professional, introductory e-mail to your preceptors for your January placement. Some preceptors will be away over the holidays and will appreciate receiving this e-mail before they are away. Include all preceptors on your precepting team on your e-mail. Contact mahn.info(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:mahn.info@umanitoba.ca> if you require e-mails for any of your preceptors. * Complete an evaluation of your second placement. This is due January 8 and is a required assignment for the program. You will access this evaluation in UM learn under the "surveys" tab. It is the only survey you will see under the survey tab. There will be no extensions granted for submitting the evaluation and you are responsible for monitoring this due date. * Complete pre-placement readings and quizzes for placement 3 by the due date stipulated in UM Learn. * Reminder: This is an intense program; you are expected to monitor due dates and plan your tasks accordingly. Extensions will not be granted for practicum assignments and quizzes. * The WRHA has updated their social media policy. Please review the updated policy (attached). Please send an email before your desired pick-up date, as it operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Each student is allowed to borrow only one manual at a time. For those in rural placements, the manuals must be returned within 6 weeks of being borrowed, for those within the city, the manuals must be returned within 3 weeks of being borrowed.
