Good morning,
Learning & Organizational Development (LOD) has opened our training and development workshops to the end of the calendar year. To register, please visit: LODReghttps://umanitoba.gosignmeup.com/Public/Course/Browse. I encourage you to check LODReg regularly to view all of the employee learning and development opportunities as they become available. These are available exclusively to University of Manitoba employees.
Some training opportunities that may interest you include:
Coaching for Performance: December 1 (NEW): The quality of a supervisor's conversations has a direct impact on employee performance, engagement, and growth. This workshop equips those with people-leadership responsibilities with practical coaching skills to support employee growth, accountability, and performance. Participants will learn how to use coaching conversations to foster ownership, solve problems, and support development. Ways to determine when coaching is the right leadership approach will be included in the workshop.
Training: Design & Development: December 3: This half-day session provides an overview of the design and development of training for organizations. We will discuss adult learning principles, how to prepare learning outcomes, the ADDIE instructional design model and ROPES: a step-by-step guide for the creation of a session plan or training outline. Handouts will be provided that include reference materials and templates that you can use as you move forward to develop training. Anyone who is, or may be asked to, develop training or participate in the delivery of training, or is interested in learning more about the training process, is encouraged to attend this session.
Project Management: December 10: Learn how to plan your next project using a simple and structured step-by-step process. This full-day session will introduce you to the basics of project management. The session will focus on the general project management processes while introducing you to project management techniques and vocabulary. Participants will leave with an understanding of the project management process from start to finish and able to contribute to the implementation of large projects and to lead small projects effectively. This is an interactive session which includes activities and small group work where you will be able to practice and develop your skills.
Ethics: Decisions & Impacts: November 19: (last offering in 2026): Decisions and their impact on others are foundational to the work that many of us perform at the university. It is important to consider when a decision may cause an ethical dilemma. The ethical considerations we apply to decisions that we make can determine, or alter, the outcome of that decision for many. It is the affect that the outcome has on others-whether an individual, a group, or some other entity-that makes it an ethical consideration. This four-hour workshop provides a framework for making decisions when ethics are in play. Through examining cases and small and large group discussion, participants will identify measures that we all can take to ensure we are acting ethically in our work processes.
Critical Dialogues: November 18: Communicating with clarity and using our verbal skills to share, exchange and invite dialogue with others are critical workplace skills for many roles in our community. If you work as part of a team, support others' work, explain or share information, this workshop may be helpful for you to learn more about how to have successful conversations. This workshop covers topics relating to clarity, nonverbal communication, listening, empathy, respect, feedback and more. Participants will use role play and case studies to examine how to structure, prepare and engage in conversation.
Manager's Forums: Workplace Culture & Communication: November 16 or December 14 (NEW): These lunchtime Manager's Forum sessions offer leaders across the UM community an opportunity to connect with peers and engage in meaningful dialogue on topics relevant to their roles. At these sessions, participants will explore the role managers play in shaping workplace culture through everyday actions, decisions, and interactions. All are welcome to register for these online sessions.
