RBC - Brain Canada Research Partnership in Mental Health Services for Children and Youth Multi-Investigator Research Initiative (MIRI) Request for Applications (RFA) Brain Canada, in partnership with the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), is pleased to announce a research partnership in mental health services for children and youth, through the Brain Canada Multi-Investigator Research Initiative (MIRI) program. The RBC – Brain Canada Research Partnership will support a multi-investigator three-year research project focused on improved delivery of mental health services through the identification and validation of innovative interventions and practices that are cost-effective, and delivered at the right place and time to support both affected individuals and their families. Notably, the funded project will involve a continuing collaboration between researchers, policy-makers, service providers, and those affected by child and youth mental health issues. The collaboration will jointly identify the research questions to be studied, be engaged in the research project itself, and cooperate in the dissemination of the projects' findings to influence policy and practice. A total of $910,000 will be awarded to one team over two or three years of funding. Manitoba Neuroscience Network 2014/2015 Seminar & Visiting Speaker Series DATE: Friday, February 27th, 2015 TIME: 9:00 a.m. LOCATION: PX236/238 PsycHealth Bldg., Bannatyne Campus Sachin Katyal, PhD Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics, University of Manitoba; Senior Scientist, Manitoba Institute of Cell Biology, CancerCare Manitoba Topic: Understanding DNA repair biology in the development of novel cancer chemotherapeutic strategies: neurodevelopment applied to neuro-oncology Research: Modulating DNA damage repair pathways in the treatment of malignant brain tumours My research aims to identify ways to dysregulate cellular DNA repair pathways in tumours and improve therapeutic success. In this regard, DNA damage repair pathways are an ideal target; first, to minimize tumour cell therapeutic resistance and second, to specifically kill cancer cells by lowering the radio- and chemotherapeutic threshold of tumour cell genotoxicity by inhibiting redundant DNA repair pathways. We use genetic and biochemical approaches: 1. to determine how DNA repair pathways co-ordinately affect neurodevelopment, 2. to investigate how DNA repair deficiency contributes to neurodegeneration and, 3. to selectively target DNA repair pathways in neural/brain tumour cell and animal lines to enhance cellular sensitization to radio- and chemotherapeutic drugs. My work will serve to expand our knowledge of DNA repair neurobiology and translate this data into tangible next-generation cancer treatment paradigms that augment therapeutic efficacy with improved patient quality-of-life. Manitoba Neuroscience Network Scientific Meeting now

This message is sent on behalf of Dr. Soheila Karimi, the chair of 2015 MNN Scientific Meeting Dear Neuroscience community, Since 2010, the Manitoba Neuroscience Network held annual scientific meetings of neuroscience faculty and trainees. These gatherings have been received with tremendous enthusiasm, attracting around 150 attendees each year. We are pleased to build on this success by holding a 5th annual meeting in 2015. The Winnipeg Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience (WCSN), under the leadership of Dr. Chris Anderson, actively promotes neuroscience research, education and outreach in Manitoba. The Manitoba Neuroscience network represents the cornerstone approach of the WCSN to encourage communication, cooperation and collaboration among Manitoba's broad basic and clinical neuroscience research community. In 2015, the meeting content will center on, synaptic plasticity, neural networks, epigenetic and genetic modeling of CNS disorders, and neural repair and regeneration. There will be participation by Manitoba principal investigators and invited speakers. There will also be a poster competition for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to show case the research done in neuroscience labs in Manitoba. Funding Announcement that might be of interest: [Home] [Home] ALS Canada and Brain Canada Joint Partnership 2015 Research Funding Opportunities: ALS Canada and Brain Canada wish to announce the 2015 funding opportunities resulting from their landmark $20 million partnership. The objective of this joint funding program is to support research that is relevant to ALS and related neurological disorders, including primary lateral sclerosis, progressive muscular atrophy, and ALS/FTLD (ALS/frontotemporal lobar dementia). The ultimate goal of the ALS Society of Canada and Brain Canada (the Partners) is to prevent or cure these disorders, to slow their progression, and to improve the quality of life for those affected and their families. Research in all stages of development is welcomed, from basic/preclinical to phase I, II and III clinical trials. ALS Canada and Brain Canada (The Partners) are seeking applications from teams of independent investigators from multiple independent institutions proposing such a translational research approach with a sound and feasible rationale, supported by preliminary data. The spirit of this program is “high risk/high reward” and is aimed at independent investigator(s) proposing a novel research approach, supported by a sound rationale and feasible experimental plan, but not necessarily preliminary data. Traditionally, the Discovery Grants program has provided support to novel projects from established ALS researchers, individuals from outside the field applying specific knowledge or expertise to ALS and related neurological disorders or teams of multiple investigators combining expertise in novel ways. Opening date: February 13, 2015 Deadline for submission: June 1, 2015 Announcement of results: September 21, 2015 ALS Canada-Brain Canada Career Transition Award This program will identify and engage a rising star pursuing innovative research in labs and academic institutions in Canada. This award has the long-term goal of developing the next generation of scientists across various disciplines within basic and clinical sciences, contributing to knowledge generation and translation in ALS. The award will provide the necessary support to either a senior postdoctoral trainee or recently hired junior faculty member to secure or maintain a faculty job in Canada.
