Seminar & Visiting Speaker Series Friday, October 28th, 2016 9:00AM PX236/238 PsychHealth Building Dr. Md Nasir Uddin Staff Scientist & Brain Canada Platform Grant Coordinator Topic: Quantitative MRI in Multiple Sclerosis Short Bio: I received my BSc in Physics from Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh. I then worked as a Lecturer in the same university for two years before moving to Canada in 2008. Then, I received an MSc in biophysics from Memorial University of Newfoundland before pursuing my PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Alberta. In my PhD I worked on developing quantitative MRI transverse relaxometry methods and applications towards Multiple Sclerosis. In January 2016, I moved to Winnipeg as a Staff Scientist & Brain Canada Platform Grant Coordinator at the University of Manitoba. By day she is a prion scientist at the Centre for Prions and Protein Folding Diseases at the University of Alberta and a clinical neurologist consultant for rapidly progressive dementia cases locally and throughout Canada. By night she is a violinist and fiddler. After her undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Calgary and her neurology residency at University of Ottawa, Dr. Sim completed a post-doctoral fellowship in prion disease research at Rocky Mountain Laboratories, NIH, Montana, under the supervision of Dr. Byron Caughey. She joined the University of Alberta Division of Neurology in 2009 and was promoted to associate professor with tenure in July, 2016. In her research lab, Dr. Sim grows prion-infected brain slices in a dish in order to ask: 1) how a prion's size and shape can influence patterns of disease and risks of transmission; and 2) how targeting multiple steps along the disease pathway might produce more effective treatments. >From protein biochemistry to animal treatment experiments, her research publications have received international media attention. We invite you to join us to learn about the neuroimaging capabilities in Manitoba and if they could be of use to you at the upcoming Brain Canada Manitoba Neuroimaging Platform Mini-Symposium, with Keynote Speaker Dr. Ravi Menon. Title: Neuroimaging approaches in research: Role of the Manitoba Neuroimaging Platform for experimental design and analysis. Date: October 14th, 2016 Time: 1-5pm Location: Apotex Centre, Room 071 (750 McDermot Avenue) Keynote Speaker: Dr. Ravi Menon, Canada Research Chair in Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Biosketch: Dr. Ravi Menon is Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Professor of Medical Biophysics, Medical Imaging, Physics and Psychiatry at the University of Western Ontario, where he is also a member of the Graduate Program in Neuroscience and the Graduate Program in Biomedical Engineering and Director of Western's Centre for Functional and Metabolic Mapping. He holds a Ph.D. in Medicine from the University of Alberta (1990), a M.Sc.(A) in Medical Physics from McGill University and a B.Sc. (Hons) in Physics from the University of British Columbia. He did his postdoctoral work in the world-renowned laboratory of Dr. Kamil Ugurbil at the University of Minnesota. He serves on numerous advisory boards, including 7 years on the Canada Gairdner Foundation and recently completed a term on the Science Advisory Council of the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research. He served for 7 years (the last 4 as Chair) on the Institute Advisory Board of the Institute for Neuroscience, Mental Health and Addiction of the CIHR. He is also one of Canada's two scientific advisory board members on the International Traumatic Brain Injury Research EU-NIH-CIHR consortium. He has held grants from a broad spectrum of agencies; CIHR, NSERC, NIH, McDonnell-Pew, Human Frontiers, ORDCF, CFI, OIT, ORF and an Ontario-NCE. He was in the first round of recipients of a Premiers Research Excellence Awrd, a Canada Research Chair and an Ontario Distinguished Researcher Award. He received a CIHR Foundation Award in 2016. His publication record in top-tier journals also reflects this broad scope, from fundamental imaging mechanism papers in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, to neuroscience papers in Science, Nature Neuroscience, Neuron and Current Biology or invited reviews in Trends and Current Opinion in Neurobiology. Over the last few years, the MNN has actively invited more than 30 national and international distinguished speakers to come to Winnipeg and interact with our scientific community. This has been achieved through a close interaction between the MNN, Kleysen Neuroscience group and the Saint Boniface Hospital. This has been a real opportunity for our Neuroscientists to interact with the speakers and establish successful collaborative projects. Many of these speakers visited our city for the first time and were quite impressed with the quality, quantity and the depth of neuroscience research at U of M.
