My lab has been investigating their development, organization and function in locomotor behaviors under different physiological and pathological conditions. We have identified molecularly, physiologically, and functionally distinct subpopulations of spinal interneurons. We are characterizing their properties and connectivity in the sensory-motor circuitry and their function in the locomotor control. We are also exploring the developmental logic and mechanisms underlying the diversification of these spinal interneurons. My talk will focus on one of the excitatory spinal neuronal populations, V3 interneurons. I will demonstrate that subpopulations of V3 neurons play unique roles in task-dependent locomotor activities. I will also elucidate our current understanding of the molecular identity of some V3 subpopulations and their diversification across hierarchically organized temporal and spatial developmental pathways. 2021 Nick Shepel Neuroscience Trainee Travel Award Application deadline: Friday, August 20, 2021 Background: The fund was established by the Division of Neurodegenerative Disorders, St. Boniface Hospital Research Centre, to honor Nick Shepel who was an outstanding researcher, friend and leader. Nick was a true inspiration to his laboratory partners and brought fire, humor, and a desire to always excel. His insistence to always try better has had a permanent effect on his lab mates and peers. Nick led by example and taught that detailed preparation and execution of experiments ensured reliable results. Purpose: The purpose of this fund shall be to recognize a young investigator(s) (specifically in the neuroscience area) by providing an annual award(s) to support travel costs associated with the applicant's attendance at an upcoming national/international conference where the applicant is presenting a poster or oral presentation. This year, there are up to four awards available with a value ranging $800 to $1,000. Eligibility: At the time of application the following conditions are required: * Students must be registered as a full-time graduate student in the College of Medicine at the University of Manitoba. * The area of research being presented at the conference must relate to the field of neuroscience. * A student admitted under the "Provisional Status" may not receive the award during the provisional period. * Amount of award(s) may vary each year. * Students must be giving an "IN-PERSON" poster or oral presentation at an upcoming scientific meeting (national/international). Virtual attendance does not qualify for award. * Students who have received this award previously should not apply. Indigenous Initiatives Workshop - Canadian Brain Research Strategy

Dear Colleagues, The Canadian Brain Research Strategy (CBRS) is a pan-Canadian effort to forge a unified strategy for Canadian brain research over the next decade and beyond. You may see more about this at www.canadianbrain.ca <http://www.canadianbrain.ca> . Equity, diversity and inclusion are of paramount importance to the CBRS mission. You may have helped by completing the EDI survey we sent to MNN members a few months ago. Also part of the EDI strategy is creation of a plan to include Indigenous Initiatives in the CBRS, and to provide networking opportunities for Indigenous researchers. Accordingly, there will be a CBRS Indigenous Initiatives Workshop taking place on June 28th from 1:00-4:00 CT. The purpose of the workshop is to obtain a roundtable of points for consideration for CBRS Indigenous Initiatives and to provide a networking opportunity for Indigenous researchers. The MNN would like to have a strong Manitoba contingent involved in these discussions. Both the Universities of Manitoba and Winnipeg have placed significant strategic focus on Indigenous perspectives and involvement in research. Research for, with, and by Indigenous peoples is an important cross-cutting dimension of scholarship at the University of Manitoba and is an area of great contemporary relevance given the historical and developmental consciousness shared by Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples and communities in Manitoba (UM Strategic Research Plan).
