Over the last few years, the MNN has actively invited more than 30 national and international distinguished speakers to come to Winnipeg and interact with our scientific community. This has been achieved through a close interaction between the MNN, Kleysen Neuroscience group and the Saint Boniface Hospital. This has been a real opportunity for our Neuroscientists to interact with the speakers and establish successful collaborative projects. Many of these speakers visited our city for the first time and were quite impressed with the quality, quantity and the depth of neuroscience research at U of M. NEW course! IMED7004 Human Brain Imaging Methods: Fall 2016 term

Dear students, A new course is running this September 2016. Registration opens on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 for all Fall Term graduate courses. This course should be available to register via Aurora Student by the next two weeks. Thanks. Jen University of Manitoba Graduate Course Announcement (2016-2017) Human Brain Imaging Methods (IMED 7004) This is a 1.5 credit hour course held on the Bannatyne Campus (Sep. 8, 2016 - Oct. 27, 2016). It will be of particular interest to graduate students whose research is in neuroscience. This course will provide an overview of the in vivo brain imaging methods and how imaging data are analysed (e.g., MRI, PET, EEG). Students will have opportunity to perform hands-on practice in computer labs with sample data. The course has 2 components: 1. Lectures that will provide a systematic survey of different brain imaging modalities, and 2. Computer Laboratory sessions in which students will perform computer analysis using real brain imaging data. As Ben mentioned, our outreach activities have gone extremely well this year, and I have another opportunity to share with you. We received this email from the Massage Therapy Association of Manitoba on Tuesday through the MNN Speaker's Bureau. They are requesting speakers for their annual education conference, which will take place April 21-23, 2017. As you will see, they have mentioned some individuals by name, and we have already contacted them, but they have also requested other speakers for the topics that are listed below. This is a great opportunity to connect with the regulatory body of a growing allied health profession in our province, and I hope you will consider taking part. MTAM is a not-for-profit organization that provides the massage therapy profession with a self-regulating body to ensure the highest standards of massage training and practice, and provide protection for the public. One of the ways we accomplish this is by holding an annual Spring Education Conference. This conference provides a means for our members to achieve some of their mandatory continuing competency credits every year. There is a growing need for evidence based education as it relates to the field of manual therapy. Topics of interest to our members would be: * The placebo effect * Treatment of chronic pain * Neural and fascial relationships * Posture * Repetitive strain disorders * Acupuncture * Psychological effects of chronic pain and their impact on treatment * The role of manual therapy in the rehabilitation of spinal cord injuries I am interested in contacting Dr. Barbara Shay, Dr. Karen Ethans and Dr. Katinka Stecina to see if they have presentations that they could offer on any of these topics. I would also be appreciate if you could make recommendations of other speakers who could present information on the above topics. Our next conference is scheduled for April 21-23, 2017 in Winnipeg at the Victoria Inn and Conference Centre. We are looking for presenters who would be able to do 1-2 hour presentations on any of the 3 days of the conference. Our education sessions are held at various times between the hours of 8:30 am - 5:00 pm. Dr. Shay, Dr. Ethans and Dr. Stecina may contact me directly if they are interested in discussing the possibility of presenting at our conference. Dr. Gandy is an international expert in the metabolism of the sticky substance called amyloid that clogs the brain in patients with Alzheimer's. In 1989, Gandy and his team discovered the first drugs that could lower formation of amyloid. Dr. Gandy has written more than 150 original papers, chapters and reviews on this topic. Dr. Gandy has received continuous NIH funding for his research on amyloid metabolism since 1986. Dr. Gandy is a member of the Faculty of 1000 Biology and serves as a Consulting Editor for The Journal of Clinical Investigation. He also serves on the Editorial Advisory Boards for the journals Public Library of Science-Medicine (PLoSM), Neurodegenerative Diseases, and Current Alzheimer Research. He is Associate Editor of the journals Molecular Neurodegeneration and Alzheimer Disease and Associated Disorders. From 1996-2006, Dr Gandy was Director of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories/Wellcome Trust Annual Summer Course on the Neurobiology of Human Neurological Disorders. In 2000, he became chief organizer for the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories Bi-Annual Winter Biotechnology Conference on Therapeutic Opportunities in Neurodegenerative Diseases and continues in that role until 2010. The Manitoba Neuroimaging Platform was recently established with funding from Brain Canada. The Platform is designed to be a central resource for MR an PET imaging sequence design, standardization and analysis. It is intended to serve investigators engaged in animal AND human research, helping to facilitate translation between them.
