OPEN VOLUNTEER POSITION - Communications/Social Media Director The Manitoba Neuroscience Network has created volunteer leadership positions over the past few years to fuel growth and success that a single person could not achieve alone. We have Directors of Outreach (Sari Hannila) and Seminars (Eftekhar Eftekharpour), as well as many volunteers for outreach events and annual meeting program chairs - Drs. Kirouac (2012/13), Fernyhough (2014), Karimi (2015) and Albensi (2016). Volunteers provide substantial benefits to their colleagues and discipline by controlling a manageable portfolio that they can take ownership of, develop into a source of pride and use as evidence of service in their own careers. As you know, we are developing a comprehensive website to feature our research, training, outreach, facilities, events and more. Establishment of a strong visual identity and a framework for the new website is almost complete, and we are working on developing strong content. A major part of communicating our content and having current, continual interaction with other scientists, potential recruits and the public, is having a strong social media presence. Ideally, we will use Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin, at least, to communicate alongside our new website. We're looking for someone to develop an active presence for MNN on these and potentially other social media platforms. Not everyone will be well-suited for this type of position but we're hoping to find just one person among us who is. Dear colleagues, I hope you all had an enjoyable summer. There have been several recent developments regarding our neuroscience outreach activities, and I will be telling you about those in the coming weeks. The first is that our MNN Speaker's Bureau has been officially launched! You can visit the website here: http://www.sfn-manitoba.ca/mnn/speakers.html. For the speakers who are listed, please let me know if you would like to change your picture or title of your talk. This has already had an impact, as we have received our first request for speakers. A local mental health organization called Sara Riel has asked for a speaker for their Mental Wellness: Networking and Resource Expo http://www.sararielinc.com/miaw_expo.php (see emails below as well). Specifically, they are looking for someone to speak on how improving cognitive function ("keeping the brain sharp" in their words) can aid recovery from mental illness. Their first choice of speaker was not available, so I am sending this invitation out to everyone as a way of making you aware of the opportunities that will be available through the Speaker's Bureau. Dear all The BiomedCon deadline for registration and also submitting abstract is approaching fast (Sept. 15)! If you have already registered, please discard this email. If not, you may continue reading the reminder below. Biomedical Engineering (BME) program is holding a one-day conference, where its morning session is dedicated to poster session and students' presentation competition. It is open to all students across U of Manitoba, whose research project is related to BME. The poster competition presentations will be in two categories of graduate and undergraduate groups. There will be cash prizes for the top three winners in each group. The deadline for a 3000-characters (maximum) abstract submission is Sept. 15th through the conference's web page. This one-day conference will be a great opportunity for students interested in BME, not only to gain practice in presentation, receiving feedback across the breadth of health and engineering research, but also to network with industries representatives and researchers in the field.
