Upcoming Epilepsy seminar

You are invited to a talk by Dr. Demitre Serletis, MD, PhD, FRCSC, FAANS, a Neurosurgeon visiting from Little Rock, Arkansas (University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences). Dr. Serletis' talk is titled "Epilepsy Surgery in the 21st Century". Friday, July 17. 12:00-13:00. Theatre B, Basic Medical Sciences Building. Dr. Serletis completed his MD at the University of Calgary in 2003. He went on to complete a PhD (Physiology and Biomedical Engineering) and Neurosurgery residency at the University of Toronto. Subsequently, he completed the Pediatric/Adult Epilepsy Surgery Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic, a unique and prestigious fellowship that provides highly specialized hypothesis-based epilepsy and high volume surgical training. Dr. Serletis currently holds an academic position at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, and established and now directs Arkansas' only comprehensive Epilepsy Surgery Program. He has also founded and grown the states' only non-profit organization for epilepsy patients and their families. In addition to epilepsy, Dr. Serletis' clinical interests are pediatric neurosurgery, functional neurosurgery, and neuro-oncology. As a surgeon-scientist, he has unique research interests in epilepsy neurodynamics and electrophysiology, and has published numerous papers in this field. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Serletis. Dear all The Biomedical Engineering (BME) program is holding a one-day conference, where its morning session is dedicated to poster session and students' presentation competition. It is open to all students across U of Manitoba, whose research project is related to BME. The poster competition presentations will be in two categories of graduate and undergraduate groups. There will be cash prizes for the top three winners in each group. The deadline for a 300-word (maximum) abstract submission is Friday Sept. 4th. This one-day conference will be a great opportunity for students interested in BME, not only to gain practice in presentation, receiving feedback across the breadth of health and engineering research, but also to network with industries representatives and researchers in the field. This message is sent on Behalf of Drs. Chris Anderson and Soheila Karimi Dear Neuroscience Community, Thank you for your participation in the 5th MNN Scientific Meeting on June 12th. This year we had over 155 participants and 55 posters, which was a record since the establishment of the event in 2010. The event was a success and we have received numerous positive feedbacks on our program. Our keynote speaker, Dr. Fehlings, was very impressed with the size of our Manitoba Neuroscience Network and the quality of our research. We would like to thank all speakers, session chairs, keynote speaker, poster presenters and all other participants. The day would not be a success without your support. MNN poster competition was well-attended and exciting. Our trainees showcased their research in a competitive poster session and judges were impressed with the quality of posters this year. UNIVERSITY OF WINNIPEG PSYCHOLOGY &NEUROSCIENCE TALK THURSDAY 18 JUNE 2015 1:30-3:00 4TH FLOOR LOCKHART (4L28) TRAVIS TODD DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGICAL AND BRAIN SCIENCE DARTMOUTH COLLEGE TOPIC: BEHAVIOURAL AND NEUROBIOLOGICAL MECHANISMS OF EXTINCTION IN PAVLOVIAN AND INSTRUMENTAL LEARNING Abstract: Pavlovian and instrumental learning are two fundamental forms of learning that contribute to behavior in a variety of ways, in both human and non-human animals. In Pavlovian extinction, repeated presentation of a signal without its reinforcer weakens behavior evoked by the signal; in instrumental extinction, repeated occurrence of a voluntary action without its reinforcer weakens the strength of the actions. In both cases, contemporary research at both the behavioural and neural levels of analysis has been guided by a set of extinction principles that were first generated by research conducted at the behavioral level. Both Pavlovian and instrumental extinction are at least partly controlled by a form of context-specific inhibitory learning, and both involve a neural circuit including the hippocampus and the medial prefrontal cortex. Dr. Travis Todd graduated from the University of Winnipeg where he worked in the Doug Williams lab. He subsequently completed a PhD with Mark Bouton at the University of Vermont. Travis won a National Research Service Award from the National Institute of Mental Health and is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in the David Bucci lab at Dartmouth College. The Society for Neuroscience will be offering travel awards for the Chicago meeting in October, 2015. The procedures have changed this year. Interested candidates must now self-nominate for a Trainee Professional Development Award<http://www.sfn.org/Awards-and-Funding/Individual-Prizes-and-Fellowships/Tra…>. One application requirement is a recommendation letter (from mentor, advisor, chapter representative or program/department chair), and SFN encourages chapter representatives to highlight applicants' chapter involvement in the recommendation letters. Unlike the original chapter travel awards program, undergraduates are also eligible for these awards as well as graduate student and postdoctoral trainees. SPEAKER: Dr. Gilbert Kirouac Dr. Gilbert Kirouac Professor - Departments of Oral Biology and Psychiatry Colleges of Dentistry and Medicine Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba Topic: The paraventricular nucleus of the midline thalamus and emotions Brief Biosketch: Dr. Kirouac received a B.A. in Psychology and M.Sc. and Ph.D. (Anatomy) at the University of Manitoba. This was followed by postdoctoral training in the Departments of Physiology at the University of Western Ontario and the University of Calgary. Prior to joining the University of Manitoba in 2006, Dr. Kirouac was an Associate Professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Our focus is in the area of behavioral neurosciences as it relates to emotions and motivation. The paraventricular nucleus of the midline thalamus (PVT) is of special interest because it is connected to areas of the brain which play a key role in the regulation of emotions. The PVT contains a high concentration of neuropeptides linked to arousal and stress. Consequently, we are interested in determining how these neuropeptides act at the PVT to influence emotional behavior. Our laboratory has established a role for the PVT in the regulation of fear and anxiety. For example, recent research in our laboratory showed that activation of the PVT with peptides called orexins produces negative emotions (fear and anxiety) in rats. We also showed that blocking of orexin receptors in the PVT attenuates the anxiety produced by previously exposing rats to an intense stressor (animal model of PTSD). Ongoing research is directed at providing more evidence for a PVT mediated emotional arousal system, discovery of the neural mechanism involved, and determining the role of the orexins and the PVT in conditions like generalized anxiety and PTSD.
