Epilepsy is the most common chronic neurological disorder in children and is characterized by recurrent unprovoked seizures due to uncontrolled electrical activity in the brain. Thirty per cent or more of epilepsy cases do not respond to conventional epileptic medications. Other treatments for epilepsy are epilepsy surgery, vagus nerve stimulation, the ketogenic diet and investigational anti-epileptic drugs. The epilepsy surgery program at BC Children's Hospital was established in the mid 90s. My research focuses on outcomes following epilepsy surgery of various types and the influence of surgery on seizure control, quality of life, learning and attention. Manitoba Neuroscience Network 2014/2015 Seminar & Visiting Speaker Series Friday, November 7th, 2014 | 3:00 pm Dr. Robert Brownstone <http://neurosurgery.medicine.dal.ca/rbrownstone.htm> Professor, Departments of Medical Neuroscience & Surgery; Director of Research, Division of Neurosugery, Dalhousie University Topic: Sensorimotor confluence and spinal cord plasticity following injury. Location: THEATRE B, Bannatyne Campus (*Reception immediately following lecture in CanadInn Hotel, 2nd floor, Ambassador Room A) Brief Biosketch: A native of Manitoba, Rob Brownstone completed most of his training at the University of Manitoba, beginning with a B.Sc. in computer science, followed by MD and PhD degrees. He then pursued post-doctoral training in neurophysiology at the Panum Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark, before returning to the University of Manitoba for residency training in neurosurgery. He accepted a faculty position there, where he practiced for five years as a neurosurgeon and spinal cord researcher before re-locating to Dalhousie University in 2000. Dr. Rob Brownstone is a Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Spinal Cord Circuits, and Professor in the Departments of Surgery (Neurosurgery) and Medical Neuroscience at Dalhousie University. As a functional neurosurgeon, he treats patients with Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders, intractable pain syndromes, and epilepsy. Work in his laboratory focuses on neural circuits controlling movement. Specifically, he studies how the brain activates spinal cord neuronal circuits to produce movement, how these spinal cord circuits are configured to produce appropriate motor coordination, and how circuits between the spinal cord and muscles ensure appropriate limb movement. His research is currently supported by three grants from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, as well as grants from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation and Nova Scotia Research and Innovation Trust. He is frequently an invited speaker to international meetings, and sits on a variety of national and international neuroscience research committees and boards. On September 18, 2014, Dr Brownstone was inducted as a Fellow into the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. Location: PX236/238, Psychiatry Bldg. Bannatyne Campus Brief Biosketch: Dr. Ko received his BSc in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Hanyang University (Seoul, South Korea). In his senior year, he became fascinated by how neurobiological systems can be modeled and interpreted mathematically, so decided to study the brain. He completed his graduate training in Cognitive Neuroscience at McGill University (Montreal) under the supervision of Dr. Antonio Strafella and Dr. Alain Ptito. After earning his PhD, he continued his training as a postdoctoral fellow in functional brain imaging at the University of Toronto, once again under Dr. Strafella. Then, he moved to New York to join Dr. David Eidelberg's group at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, where he trained in multivariate brain imaging analysis. In 2014, he was appointed as an Assistant Professor at The University of Manitoba, where he is currently investigating brain imaging-based biomarkers and therapeutic brain stimulation. Her group uses a combination of functional magnetic resonance imaging and transcranial magnetic stimulation to map changes in brain activity. Her studies are among the first to comprehensively examine the patterns of brain activation as they relate to motor learning and parameters of practice after stroke. It's my pleasure to introduce Manitoba neuroscientists to Dr. Tabrez Siddiqui as the most recent faculty appointee to the Neuroscience Research Program at the University of Manitoba/Health Sciences Centre. Dr. Siddiqui is appointed in the Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology but his research program will be located in the Kleysen Institute Neuroscience Research Program. Dr. Siddiqui received his PhD in Neurobiology from the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen, Germany. He was a postdoctoral fellow and Research Associate in the Department of Psychiatry at UBC in Dr. Ann Marie Craig's laboratory. His research interests are in synaptic development and organization.
