Manitoba Neuroscience Network 2014/2015 Seminar & Visiting Speaker Series Date: Friday, March 27th 2015 Time: 9:00 a.m. Location: PX236/238 PsycHealth Bldg., Bannatyne Campus Donald Miller, PhD Professor, Neuroscience Research Program, Kleysen Institute for Advanced Medicine, Health Sciences Centre & University of Manitoba Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics, University of Manitoba Topic: Medicating the brain: Potential routes for drug passage through the blood-brain barrier. My research interests are in understanding the cellular factors that control blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability under both normal and pathophysiological conditions. Utilizing both cell culture and whole animal models, my laboratory examines various transport processes within the brain microvessel endothelial cells for moving drugs and solutes into and out of the brain. One area of research interest is in drug efflux transporter localization and expression in the brain endothelial cells, and how modulation of transporter activity influences drug delivery to the brain. My laboratory is also actively pursuing alternative routes for drug delivery across the BBB including transient modulation of BBB permeability and the use of magnetic nanoparticles for targeted delivery to the brain. The meeting content will centre on, synaptic plasticity, neural networks, epigenetic and genetic modeling of CNS disorders, and neural repair and regeneration. There will be participation by principal investigators, trainees and invited speakers. There will also be a poster competition for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. FIRST BRAIN BEE

Brain Awareness Week is now in the books for 2015. Last week the Winnipeg Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience hosted a successful visit from a Canada Excellence Research Chair and presented a very well-received and well-attended Café Scientifique on concussion/brain injury. On Saturday, we finished the week by presenting the first ever Manitoba Brain Bee. Manitoba high school students performed well and a winner was declared. We are excited to grow this event over the next several years as a tool for grass-roots neuroscience outreach in our local communities. This event included talks and demonstrations and was a challenge to organize and execute. RBC - Brain Canada Research Partnership in Mental Health Services for Children and Youth Multi-Investigator Research Initiative (MIRI) Request for Applications (RFA) Brain Canada, in partnership with the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), is pleased to announce a research partnership in mental health services for children and youth, through the Brain Canada Multi-Investigator Research Initiative (MIRI) program. The RBC – Brain Canada Research Partnership will support a multi-investigator three-year research project focused on improved delivery of mental health services through the identification and validation of innovative interventions and practices that are cost-effective, and delivered at the right place and time to support both affected individuals and their families. Notably, the funded project will involve a continuing collaboration between researchers, policy-makers, service providers, and those affected by child and youth mental health issues. The collaboration will jointly identify the research questions to be studied, be engaged in the research project itself, and cooperate in the dissemination of the projects' findings to influence policy and practice. Manitoba Neuroscience Network 2014/2015 Seminar & Visiting Speaker Series DATE: Friday, February 27th, 2015 TIME: 9:00 a.m. LOCATION: PX236/238 PsycHealth Bldg., Bannatyne Campus Sachin Katyal, PhD Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics, University of Manitoba; Senior Scientist, Manitoba Institute of Cell Biology, CancerCare Manitoba Topic: Understanding DNA repair biology in the development of novel cancer chemotherapeutic strategies: neurodevelopment applied to neuro-oncology Research: Modulating DNA damage repair pathways in the treatment of malignant brain tumours My research aims to identify ways to dysregulate cellular DNA repair pathways in tumours and improve therapeutic success. In this regard, DNA damage repair pathways are an ideal target; first, to minimize tumour cell therapeutic resistance and second, to specifically kill cancer cells by lowering the radio- and chemotherapeutic threshold of tumour cell genotoxicity by inhibiting redundant DNA repair pathways. We use genetic and biochemical approaches: 1. to determine how DNA repair pathways co-ordinately affect neurodevelopment, 2. to investigate how DNA repair deficiency contributes to neurodegeneration and, 3. to selectively target DNA repair pathways in neural/brain tumour cell and animal lines to enhance cellular sensitization to radio- and chemotherapeutic drugs. My work will serve to expand our knowledge of DNA repair neurobiology and translate this data into tangible next-generation cancer treatment paradigms that augment therapeutic efficacy with improved patient quality-of-life.
