The talks are targeted to high performance amateur athletes, coaches and/or parents to help with development and preparing athletes for competition. We're very interested in incorporating the topic of 'sleep' as one of our topics this year. Is there anyone within the MNN network that would be interested in speaking on the importance of sleep for athletes, sleep strategies for a good night sleep, sleep cycles, naps or other related topics. When researching speakers, we came across Dr. Marcus Ng, but there may be another speaker within the network that could be good fit. All presentations take place at Sport Manitoba's Conference Room (capacity 80), located at 145 Pacific Avenue, Winnipeg Manitoba. The series is also broadcasted via webstream so that athletes in rural regions of the province are able to obtain the information presented. Physiology and Pathophysiology, Regenerative Medicine Program We are pleased to offer a new interdisciplinary medicine course titled: Neural Stem Cells: Biology and Regenerative Medicine Applications. This course (IMED7104) will discuss the current concepts in neural stem cells from basic neurobiology (development, fate specification and maintenance) to their potential clinical applications in treating a broad range of neurological disorders through activation of endogenous cell population, cellular reprograming, cell transplantation as well as gene and drug delivery. Neural stem cells play critical roles in the developing and adult nervous system and the course is developed to build the necessary knowledge for graduate students and residents within all disciplines in neurosciences. Announcing MNN's new art-science collaboration!

[cid:image001.jpg@01D158FE.B69B8D00] [cid:image005.jpg@01D52048.82783DB0] Hello everyone, Following the success of Neurocraft, many of you have asked if there would be more opportunities to connect with local artists, and today I am pleased to announce the launch of Dura Mater: Reflections on Neurofeminism, our new collaboration with Mentoring Artists for Women's Art (MAWA). MAWA was founded in 1983 and provides mentoring, networking, and professional development opportunities for women artists in Manitoba. Their members include such distinguished artists as Ione Thorkelsson, Diana Thorneycroft, and Shawna Dempsey. You can find out more about them at www.mawa.ca<http://www.mawa.ca> Are you interested in participating? Here are a few key points to consider. * This collaboration is open to all MNN faculty members. Depending on the response, students and postdocs may be considered as well. * There are six spots available. * The artists will submit their applications by September 18th and pairings will be finalized in the fall. Participating scientists will have the opportunity to view the artists' applications and identify potential partners. * The program will run from January-December, 2020. An exhibition of the finished pieces will be held at the Buhler Gallery at St. Boniface Hospital in March, 2020. * MAWA has a very strong educational mandate, and so, this program will be far more structured than Neurocraft. Participants will be required to meet with their partners for a minimum of two hours per month, and there will also be six group meetings that will be held every two months at MAWA's offices. These meetings are mandatory and will involve group discussions, lectures, and opportunities to share the work that has been produced. * Participating in this collaboration will therefore involve a 36 hour time commitment (minimum) over the course of the year and it will also require flexibility in your schedule to accommodate the individual and group meetings. * Is this only open to women? Certainly not! The program is open to all genders. The vast majority of the artists will be women, and they will likely be interested in exploring feminist themes in their work, but participants are free to pursue any avenue of inquiry. Collaborative works are also encouraged. The attached flyer was distributed to MAWA members earlier this month and it provides some additional information about the program. It promises to be a unique and engaging intellectual experience, so I hope you will consider taking part. If you are interested, please send me an email prior to September 18th, and if you have any questions, feel free to send those along as well. However, the specific mechanisms by which OTX2 represses neural differentiation in these highly aggressive tumors are not well characterized. We have utilized ChIP-sequencing combined with extensive medulloblastoma patient transcriptome and proteomics data to identify and subsequently validate a novel OTX2 regulatory network that controls Group 3 medulloblastoma cell fate decisions. OTX2 directly restricts the expression of neuronal differentiation genes encoding transcription factors including the novel target genes PAX3 and PAX6. Expression of PAX3 and PAX6 is significantly lower in Group 3 MB patients and is correlated with reduced survival. Similar to OTX2 silencing, PAX3 and PAX6 overexpression inhibit self-renewal and enhance neuronal differentiation in vitro while PAX3, on its own, increases survival in vivo. Finally, we identify mTORC1 and EPHB2 forward signaling as downstream effectors of OTX2-PAX3, thus highlighting axon guidance and protein synthesis pathways as novel therapeutic targets and key players in Group 3 medulloblastoma pathogenesis.
