Dear colleagues, I hope you all had an enjoyable summer. There have been several recent developments regarding our neuroscience outreach activities, and I will be telling you about those in the coming weeks. The first is that our MNN Speaker's Bureau has been officially launched! You can visit the website here: http://www.sfn-manitoba.ca/mnn/speakers.html. For the speakers who are listed, please let me know if you would like to change your picture or title of your talk. This has already had an impact, as we have received our first request for speakers. A local mental health organization called Sara Riel has asked for a speaker for their Mental Wellness: Networking and Resource Expo http://www.sararielinc.com/miaw_expo.php (see emails below as well). Specifically, they are looking for someone to speak on how improving cognitive function ("keeping the brain sharp" in their words) can aid recovery from mental illness. Their first choice of speaker was not available, so I am sending this invitation out to everyone as a way of making you aware of the opportunities that will be available through the Speaker's Bureau. Deadline is approaching fast! UofM BiomedCon Registration as well as students' abstract submission

Dear all The BiomedCon deadline for registration and also submitting abstract is approaching fast (Sept. 15)! If you have already registered, please discard this email. If not, you may continue reading the reminder below. Biomedical Engineering (BME) program is holding a one-day conference, where its morning session is dedicated to poster session and students' presentation competition. It is open to all students across U of Manitoba, whose research project is related to BME. The poster competition presentations will be in two categories of graduate and undergraduate groups. There will be cash prizes for the top three winners in each group. The deadline for a 3000-characters (maximum) abstract submission is Sept. 15th through the conference's web page. This one-day conference will be a great opportunity for students interested in BME, not only to gain practice in presentation, receiving feedback across the breadth of health and engineering research, but also to network with industries representatives and researchers in the field. Upcoming Epilepsy seminar

You are invited to a talk by Dr. Demitre Serletis, MD, PhD, FRCSC, FAANS, a Neurosurgeon visiting from Little Rock, Arkansas (University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences). Dr. Serletis' talk is titled "Epilepsy Surgery in the 21st Century". Friday, July 17. 12:00-13:00. Theatre B, Basic Medical Sciences Building. Dr. Serletis completed his MD at the University of Calgary in 2003. He went on to complete a PhD (Physiology and Biomedical Engineering) and Neurosurgery residency at the University of Toronto. Subsequently, he completed the Pediatric/Adult Epilepsy Surgery Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic, a unique and prestigious fellowship that provides highly specialized hypothesis-based epilepsy and high volume surgical training. Dr. Serletis currently holds an academic position at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, and established and now directs Arkansas' only comprehensive Epilepsy Surgery Program. He has also founded and grown the states' only non-profit organization for epilepsy patients and their families. In addition to epilepsy, Dr. Serletis' clinical interests are pediatric neurosurgery, functional neurosurgery, and neuro-oncology. As a surgeon-scientist, he has unique research interests in epilepsy neurodynamics and electrophysiology, and has published numerous papers in this field. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Serletis.
