Manitoba Neuroscience Network Seminar Series Friday, October 25th, 2013 | 9:00 am Dr. Tooru Mizuno Associate Professor Department of Physiology University of Manitoba Topic: Regulation of hypothalamic gene expression and metabolism by glucose. Location: PX236/238, Psychiatry Bldg. Bannatyne Campus Brief Biosketch: Mizuno began his studies in grassland science at Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine in Japan. He then went to Japan's Yokohama City University School of Medicine in Japan to receive his PhD in Physiology. Afterwards he went to Fishberg Center for Neurobiology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York where he worked as a Research Associate, Instructor, and Research Assistant Professor. In 2003 he took the post of Instructor at Harvard Medical School's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. In 2004, after being offered a Tier 2 CRC, Mizuno came to the University of Manitoba's Department of Physiology. His research focuses on metabolic diseases such as obesity. More specifically, he studies CNS mechanisms of metabolic regulation by nutrients and hormones. Location: PX236-238, PsycHealth Centre Theatre Brief Biosketch: As a physicist specializing in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), I am developing a non-invasive, empirical method to diagnose Alzheimer's disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and other central nervous systems disorders as early as possible. I am also using MRI to follow the effectiveness of treatment regimes over the course of time. Dear Manitoba Neuroscience Community On behalf of the Winnipeg Chapter Society for Neuroscience and the Manitoba Neuroscience Network, it is my pleasure to announce the 2013-2014 Seminar Series. These monthly seminars are held in a joint format with the University of Manitoba Clinical Neuroscience Rounds and are intended to encourage collaboration and exchange of ideas between the clinicians and the basic neuroscientists. This year we have put together a diverse series of talks from the local scientists as well as three distinguished visiting speakers. I am hoping that we all can attend these meetings and enhance the sessions with lively discussions.
