Dear MNN members, We are pleased to introduce the refreshed MNN Seminar Committee, including the MNN Executive Committee and our colleagues Henry Dunn, Jill Stobart, Mark Fry, Zahra Moussavi, Sanoji Wijenayake, and our student voice, Mohammed Abrar Basha. In a bid to intensify our commitment and reach, we are initiating the MNN Student's Seminar Committee. This new formation will work symbiotically with the principal Seminar Committee. Students across all campuses are invited to be a part of this committee. Greater Coordination: Our MNN Seminars will now synchronize with various seminar series across all Winnipeg campuses and programs. This endeavour aims to bolster participation and benefit our valued members. 2. Visiting Speaker Series: Our aim is to welcome up to eight guest speakers and potentially increase this number. Neuroscience Grand Rounds: This format will blend faculty and clinician talks. We invite you to express your interest or recommend others by the same August 21 deadline. 4. MNN Engagement Rounds: Each month, we will focus on a particular lab. The lab's Principal Investigator (PI) will introduce their research, followed by short presentations from up to 3-4 of their trainees. The session will conclude with an informal social hour accompanied by pizza and drinks. Further details will be shared soon. In addition, the role involves achieving research outcomes as part of the Pan-Canadian TRanslational Initiative to DE-risk NeuroTherapeutics (TRIDENT) project. The position will play a lead role in training staff, graduate students, undergraduate students, and post-doctoral fellows on advanced microscopy techniques, and in resolving issues that arise in the research environment. The Research Associate will support and operationalize new and innovative research opportunities as requested, participate in the development of research and project plans, and design, build and run experiments to image small animal brain tissue using advanced microscopy techniques. The role will plan, implement, and coordinate data collection, perform data analysis, develop microscopy best practices, troubleshoot whole-brain imaging and clearing techniques, evaluate and interpret experimental results, develop models or correlations, and prepare reports, including scientific manuscripts, and other written material for presentations and/or submissions to various stakeholders as required. The role will also carry out original and independent research under the guidance of Dr. Prado and collaborators. Qualifications Education: - Master's degree in Molecular Biology, Cellular Biology, Neuroscience, or related field - PhD in Molecular Biology, Cellular Biology, Neuroscience, or related field Experience: - 2 years of demonstrated experience in fluorescence microscopy techniques, using light-sheet, confocal, or super resolution, in a related academic research environment - Published experimental findings involving microscopy work preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: - Expertise in advanced microscopy techniques involving rodent brains - Ability to learn new microscopy techniques and to troubleshoot microscopy-related issues quickly and effectively - Ability to produce high-quality microscopy images and to analyze microscopy data - Ability to troubleshoot perfusions of animal models (mice and marmosets) and to troubleshoot clearing methods - Ability to train others and to develop and maintain procedures with high attention to detail - Familiarity with regulations and guidelines governing research ethics in an academic environment and with best practices for reviewing and writing grant proposals - In depth knowledge with methods for research design, implementation, and analysis - Familiarity with techniques for updating, managing and extracting data from a research database - Communication skills to describe technical concepts effectively to both novice and sophisticated users and complete detailed analytics and reports - Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy - Ability to work in a manner that models best practices in confidentiality standards - Ability to provide solutions and ideas for improvement by using imaginative approaches where constructive thinking and innovation are required - Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate the research group's events and activities - Ability to provide guidance, support and feedback in a way that is positively received - Results-oriented with the ability to motivate and coach research group members to meet high performance standards, while working effectively as a member of the leadership team - Ability to investigate defined issues, solicit input, and suggest remedies and alternative approaches that meet the needs of the situation - Proven ability and natural inclination to develop relationships by interacting with people in a professional, respectful and diplomatic manner Marco A.M. EXTENSION of MNN travel and lectureship awards deadline - JULY 24

*** Please note that the submission deadline for the MNN travel and lectureship awards has been extended to July 24th, 2023 *** We are pleased to announce that the Manitoba Neuroscience Network will again be accepting applications for 2023/24 TRAVEL AWARDS FOR NEUROSCIENCE PROJECTS and the 2024 VIKTOR HAVLICEK MEMORIAL NEUROSCIENCE LECTURESHIP. TRAVEL AWARDS: A legacy fund created by the estate of Nancy Hettie Clark is used to enrich neuroscience training and support opportunities to network within the wider neuroscience community. Two travel awards of up to $1000 each are intended to be awarded annually to a graduate student and a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Manitoba. The application deadline is JULY 10. The eligible travel period is between May 1, 2023 and April 30, 2024. Eligibility: Eligible trainees are either graduate students or postdoctoral fellows. Student candidates must be enrolled as full-time graduate students (PhD or MSc) in the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Manitoba, and have a cumulative graduate grade point average of 3.5 or greater (University of Manitoba scale). Postdoctoral fellow candidates must be within five years of having been awarded their Ph.D. and have a full-time appointment at the University of Manitoba or an affiliated hospital or institute. All candidates must demonstrate excellent research performance and potential in a neurosciences-related discipline, and must demonstrate they will disseminate research results that reflect a high-quality contribution by The University of Manitoba. How to apply: A complete application package consists of the following: * Cover letter stating the following (1 page maximum): o Application category (student or postdoctoral fellow) and your start date in that position o The conference title, location and dates o Type of presentation (e.g. poster or oral) o The importance of the meeting and significance for career development o Any information that would allow reviewers to assess the significance or impact of the conference (e.g. abstracts are peer-reviewed) o Clearly state your graduate GPA (students only) * Graduate level academic transcript (students only) * Listing of scholarly output (publications and presentations) * Support letter from the primary research advisor with (a) a merit assessment of the candidate and project, and (b) confirmation that there is a commitment to cover all eligible travel expenses less the award value * Copy of the submitted abstract Submit all materials to <mailto:info@manitobaneuroscience.ca> info(a)manitobaneuroscience.ca email by JULY 10. The support letter may be appended or sent separately by the research advisor. LECTURESHIP: Viktor Havlicek, MD, PhD, DSc, was a Professor in the Department of Physiology (now Physiology and Pathophysiology) at the University of Manitoba from 1968 to 1981. The Viktor Havlicek Memorial fund was established through gifts to the University of Manitoba in his memory. This fund yields at least $3,000, with a possibility of up to $4,000, once every two years to support a visit to the University of Manitoba by an internationally-renowned neuroscientist in a manner that encourages interactions with trainees. Applications are now being accepted until JULY 10, 2023 for a visit and lecture to take place between April 1, 2024 and March 31, 2025. Applications for the next Lectureship will be accepted in 2025 for 2026/2027 fiscal year. Nominations must be made by a faculty member but trainees and staff are encouraged to suggest names to their advisors. Faculty from any MNN contributing institution (ie. not only the University of Manitoba) may submit nominations. A complete nomination consists of a letter to the Neuroscience Awards Committee (NAC) Chair explaining the rationale for choice of candidate (1 page maximum), along with any supporting materials the applicant deems useful for assessing the merit of the candidate and the benefits of his or her visit to the University of Manitoba. The NAC will determine an order of invitation priority for submitted nominees and the top-priority candidate invited at a time determined in consultation with the nominator.
