Introducing NEW Manitoba Neuroscience Seminars

The Winnipeg Chapter Society for Neuroscience <http://sfn-manitoba.ca/> is pleased to introduce the new Manitoba Neuroscience Network Seminar Series. Eight seminars are planned. They will be held the last Friday of each month, October thru May, during the second hour of Clinical Neuroscience Rounds. The Manitoba Neuroscience Network represents neuroscientists from several campuses, seminars will therefore be distributed among the Bannatyne, St. Boniface and Fort Garry campuses, although most will be at Bannatyne. The spirit of our effort is to try to bring people together once a month. Therefore, we encourage you to travel to the site of each seminar. However, seminars at St. Boniface and Fort Garry will be video-linked to Bannatyne for those who cannot travel. Please find attached the seminar schedule for 2010/2011. We will circulate separate notices for each event as we approach each one. The first speaker is Dr. Jim Nagy, October 29, 2010 at 9am in room PX236/238 Psych Health Bldg., Bannatyne Campus. The Centre for Research & Treatment of Atherosclerosis Seminar Series: Dr. Richard Bazinet Date: Friday, October 1, 2010 Time: 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM Location: A229 Chown Bldg.** (**This event will be video-linked to St. Boniface Campus - Room R1002, St. Boniface Research Centre) Dr. Richard Bazinet <http://www.utoronto.ca/nutrisci/faculty/Bazinet/> Department of Nutritional Sciences Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto TOPIC: Maintaining brain polyunsaturated fatty acid concentrations: Uptake and Metabolism. Dr. Bazinet's Biosketch: Dr. Bazinet received his BSc from the University of Western Ontario and completed his PhD under the supervision of Dr. Stephen Cunnane at the University of Toronto in 2003. Dr. Bazinet then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Dr. Stanley Rapoport's Brain Physiology and Metabolism Section at the National Institute on Aging where he examined the brain arachidonic acid cascade as a target of drugs used to treat bipolar disorder. Dr. Bazinet joined the University of Toronto in 2006, where he is currently an assistant professor. Dr. Bazinet is also the 2008 recipient of the Early Career Award from the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids as well as the 2010 recipient of the Jordi Folch-Pi award from the American Society for Neurochemistry. Dr. Bazinet sits on several editorial boards and is an Associate Editor for Senior Associate Editor of Lipids and in 2010 he became the Editor-in-Chief of Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids. The goal of Dr. Bazinet's research program is to identify the mechanisms that regulate brain lipid uptake and metabolism (signaling) and to identify the role of brain lipid metabolism in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases and neuropsychiatric disorders. Dr. Bazinet's group uses a combination of molecular biology, biochemistry and using kinetic approaches. September 17, 2010 Dear Manitoba Neuroscientists, The Winnipeg Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience is committed to improving the public's understanding of the brain and nervous system. We are currently in the process of designing a program of outreach activities that will maximize the value of the contributions we make. This includes formulating a plan for our participation in the International Brain Awareness Week. My feeling is that the best way to proceed is to assemble a committee of a few dedicated individuals who believe strongly in community outreach. The objective of that committee will be to formulate a cohesive outreach plan. All ideas are on the table and innovation is encouraged. If you have a strong belief in cultivating stronger public knowledge of neuroscience and possibly making a difference in the lives of young people, please contact me at canderson(a)sbrc.ca .
