Mental Health First Aid, Health Promotion Project

Dear Nursing Students, We are fourth year nursing students in our community rotation, located at the YMCA Mental Health Services. Our manager has graciously offered to host a private session for a minimum of 8 students to become certified in Mental Health First Aid. This program is typically associated with a fee of $300 for certification but for a limited time, this program can be offered for 50% off just for U of M students. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain knowledge on mental health crisis management within the community, support the Mental Health Services program at the YMCA, as well to strengthen your nursing CV. The program is a two-day session, with the next program being offered June 25th – June 26th. With nursing schedules being busy, if there is enough interest, Rebecca (manager at YMCA Mental Health Services) is willing to try to find a more convenient time to deliver the program (in August after finals, or in November during reading week). Hello Students, I trust everyone is doing well and that the semester has been going smoothly. As we move through the academic year, I would like to wish everyone continued success in their studies and clinical placements. My name is Hamidat Ahmed-Ishimel, and I am honoured to serve as your Senior Stick for the 2026–2027 academic year. I am excited to work with and advocate for nursing students throughout the year. This initiative is designed to provide additional academic support for students enrolled in NURS 2500 through weekly 1-hour tutoring sessions focused on improving understanding and performance in the course. Volunteer Tutor Opportunity We are currently seeking volunteer tutors who meet the following eligibility criteria: • Must be a 3rd- or 4th-year nursing student • Must have achieved a minimum grade of B+ in NURS 2500 • Must be interested in gaining teaching and leadership experience Volunteer tutors will receive formal recognition on their Co-Curricular Record (CCR) upon completing a minimum of 10 hours throughout the semester. Tutors are expected to commit to one hour per week, but the specific day, time, and location of the sessions can be coordinated directly between the tutor and tutee for flexibility.
