Upcoming events: Reproductive Rites: Book Launch and Abortion Outreach with Dr. Dana Medoro and Dr. Neil McArthur Hosted by Lisa Naylor (Wolseley MLA) at Nicolino's (2077 Pembina Hwy) Thursday, Jan 26th, 2023. Reception starts at 6 PM / Panel Discussion at 7 PM Neil McCarthur and Dana Medoro will launch their books in solidarity with the Women's Health Clinic. This event will be MC'd by Lisa Naylor, formerly an abortion counsellor with the WHC, now the MLA for Wolseley. Small donations will be gratefully accepted for a new ultrasound machine at the WHC. Some books will be available for purchase.

On Caliban and Slavery in Shakespeare’s The Tempest by Dr. Jamie Paris (ETFM) Thursday, February 9th, 2023 from 2:30 - 4:30 PM CT 409 Tier Building The UMIH is thrilled to present the New Faculty Colloquium in which we highlight the research-in-progress of new faculty members in Arts. In this talk, Dr. Paris will consider the enslavement and imprisonment of Caliban in William Shakespeare’s The Tempest in terms of the history of the enslavement of Indigenous peoples in the New World in the early modern period and with reference to the overrepresentation of Indigenous peoples in Canadian prisons. This talk will attempt to bridge ideas from premodern critical race studies with the emerging field of early modern Indigenous studies.

J.W. Dafoe Political Studies Students’ Conference (PSSC)

The department of Political Studies is excited to announce the 2023 J.W. Dafoe Political Studies Students’ Conference entitled The Hot Artic. Free and open to the public, this annual conference features distinguished Canadian and international speakers exploring issues in international affairs and their implications for Canada. The first lecture is the Paul Buteux Memorial Lecture delivered by Madeleine Redfern, Inuk activist, on Feb 1st from 6 - 8:00 PM CT. There are also three panels running from 10 AM - 4 PM focused on unpacking issues in the Artic on Feb 2nd at the Great Hall (Canadian Museum for Human Rights). The Centre for Professional and Applied Ethics Graduate Fellowship 23-24

The Ethics Graduate Fellowship is open to all University of Manitoba graduate students, at any stage of their program. Applications from students in all fields are encouraged. The aim of the fellowship is to support graduate students who do research in the field of ethics, or to encourage students in other fields to consider the ethical implications of their work, to integrate ethics into their research, and to promote understanding of ethics as it relates to their areas of study. Two fellowships worth $3000 will be awarded to two successful applicants. Qualification and publication records and the significance of applicant's research will be considered. Please submit a curriculum vitae and a 500-word research proposal to the address above.
