Subject: abstracts due for CSA annual meeting
The Canadian Society of Agronomy is trying something new for it's 2013 annual conference by holding it jointly with the annual meeting of the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, and Soil Science Society of America. The Meeting will be held in Tampa, Florida on November 3-6. I encourage you to consider attending and to submit an abstract. The early abstract submission deadline is April 30 and the final deadline for abstracts is May 14. Please see the attached message about abstract submission and for more information on how the CSA sessions will be organized within the larger conference.

Subject: Results: Private Industry Involvement in PSGSS Vote
Hi all,
The results of the vote regarding our position on private industry involvement in future plant science graduate student symposiums was:
11 Yes (agreed with the statement)
1 No (did not agree with the statement)
Obviously, not everyone voted. If you did not get a chance to vote and/or you have concerns regarding our viewpoint on this matter (restated at the bottom of this email), please contact me directly at:
Mary_Price(a)umanitoba.ca within the next few days.
I will be sending out an email to the other schools inviting them to join the discussion later this week and will keep everyone posted.
Thanks to everyone who voted!
Mary
U of M PSGSA standpoint on private industry involvement in future PSGS
symposiums:
It is without a doubt that private industry plays a crucial role in agriculture and agricultural research. However, it is our opinion that it should be kept, to some degree, at an arms length from meetings interested in discussing ACADEMIC agricultural research. While we acknowledge the role various companies may play in providing financial assistance to carry out some students projects, we feel that including and acknowledging this within the individual students presentation would suffice for the purpose of our meeting. We also acknowledge that the PSGSS requires a substantial amount of fundraising and that a large portion of this money must often be sourced from private industry. However, the acknowledgement of the help provided by these companies should be carried out to a reasonable degree, such as within the schedule handbook. Finally, we believe the unwritten mandate of this meeting to be one of inter-school graduate student learning and socializing. For this reason, we do not believe non-student representatives from any institution (whether private or public) should be present save for invited speakers or judges.

Subject: Mess In Grad Lounge Fridge
Hi guys,
If any of you have had food in the grad lounge fridge recently, please check at some point today to make sure that you do not have any spoiled food in there. There is a plastic bag of stuff which is making a mess, if any of it is yours and you would like to salvage it, please do so ASAP. I'm going to throw out the entire contents of the bag at the end of the day Monday.
Remember the fridge isn't a depository to forget about your lunches, it's not hard to toss something in the garbage if you're not going to eat it before it goes bad. If old food keeps building up, we might need to start throwing everything out on a weekly basis.
Thanks,
Mary

Subject: Vote Required -- Private Industry Involvement in PSGSS
Hi all,
I'm asking EVERY STUDENT to take a few minutes to read the following and to reply to this email with their vote on the following matter.
As you're aware, the plant science graduate students symposium is held each year at one of the three participating schools (University of Saskatchewan, North Dakota State University and University of Manitoba). Traditionally, this meeting has been a chance for graduate students to improve their presentation skills in a semi-relaxed environment and to socialize with students from other schools.
It is usually necessary for the hosting school to source some funding from private companies in order to finance the event, which necessitates acknowledgement. However, there has been some concern raised with regards to the degree of private industry involvement in this meeting. In particular, things such as the presence of industry representatives at the presentations, presentations to students by industry reps instead of academic researchers or an overly high degree of advertising are of concern to some students.
I think it's important to start a discussion with the other two schools regarding this matter and potentially draft guidelines for future symposiums. Through casual discussions with our grad students, I have come up with the following consensus for our stance on this
matter:
Please reply by email by Sunday April 14th with either:
"Yes" - you agree with the opinion stated above "No" - you do not agree with the opinion stated above
The results of the vote will be emailed to all graduate students. If there is no clear decision, we will hold an open discussion next week.
Mary

Subject: Space allocation
The PLant Science Space Allocation committee again asks for your requirements in order to map out the assignments for the second term. This will be in force from May 1, 2013 to August 31, 2013. As before, we need specific area needs and conditions submitted so that an accurate allocation can be made. Please send the details to either Dr. Stasolla or myself no later than April 22, 2013.
Also, I want to mention that we will be beginning the change over to the new lighting systems during this allocation period. Because of this, it is imperative to know if it will cause any disruptions in your research work. I expect the changes to occur very quickly but we may have to do some secondary planning to reduce any problems in this area. I am anticipating work to commence on this project on or about the last week of May and no later than the first week of June. Please factor this into your considerations.
On behalf of the Space Allocation Committee, I thank you for your cooperation.
Ian Brown
