The annual EU Visitor's programme (EUVP) is now accepting applications
The European Union Visitors Programme (EUVP) enables young leaders from
countries outside the European Union to obtain first-hand impressions of
the European Union's policies, Institutions and achievements and to
increase mutual understanding between professionals from non-EU
countries and their EU counterparts. Travel and hotel costs for the
round trip are covered by the EUVP. As well, a per diem is paid to each
participant to cover meals and incidentals.
The EUVP is jointly supported and administered by the European
Parliament and the European Commission. It has been in operation since
1974. A EUVP visit consists of an individual five- to eight-day
programme of meetings with EU officials at the EU institutions in
Brussels, Strasbourg and /or Luxembourg. All programmes are coordinated
and arranged by the EUVP Secretariat in Brussels. Each visit is custom
tailored to the wishes of each participant and takes place during the
following year.

*The Manitoba Health Research Poster Competition*
The Manitoba Health Research Poster Competition (June 2) for graduate
students is a great venue for students from across the health spectrum
(Animal Science to zoologists... as broad as the CIHR mandate) to gain
practice in presentation, receive feedback from experienced judges
(awards of excellence are also available), and network with students
from across the breadth of health research, both here and nationally.
The opportunities for networking are broad, from social events (June 3)
such as the dinner cruise and tours... the broad-spectrum symposium on
Molecular Imaging (June 4) and meeting with CIHR leadership (June 3).
And it¹s all free for participants, so I'd encourage you consider this
opportunityand to pass the message along to your colleagues. For more

*Association of Graduate Liberal Studies Programs Annual Conference*:
Imagination in an Age of Instant Information
*Association of Graduate Liberal Studies Programs Annual Conference
<http://www.aglsp.org/>*
*October 22-24, 2009 *
Disney's Coronado Springs Resort Walt Disney World® Lake Buena Vista, FL
Hosted by Master of Liberal Studies Program, Rollins College
<http://www.rollins.edu/holt/liberalstudies/>
Special Keynote Speaker: Billy Collins
<http://www.barclayagency.com/collins.html>
What role does imagination play in an age when information on almost
every topic is available instantaneously? Why do students need to learn
to analyze a poem, a novel, or a piece of art when the works of scholars
and specislists are so easily accessible? Can instant information
actually discourage students from using imagination and creativity to
address important issues? How can we help students understand that the
world's great ideas, discoveries, and artistic innovations came from men
and women with imagination, a passion for knowledge, and a need for
self-expression? Keynote speaker Billy Collins, US poet laureate
2001-2003, will stimulate the discussion as we explore how we keep
imagination and creativity at the center of our Graduate Liberal Studies
programs. He will speak at the Friday night banquet at the Living Seas
Pavilion, Epcot.

Course: Electronics for Fieldwork
*Overview*
This 2-day course is designed to give users of electronic field
equipment a basic understanding of electronics. Participants learn how
to diagnose problems, make common "field fixes" and understand
troubleshooting advice
from off-site technical advisors. Course content is tailored to the
needs of each class and special topics can usually be incorporated into
the curriculum.
The instructor has an extensive background in both electronics and field
biology and, so, understands the problems of "electronics in the bush".
Hands-on class time gives students experience in how to use test
instruments to diagnose problems, skills needed to affect basic repairs
and knowledge to help design some custom solutions.

The Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA)
Understanding the Complexity of Aging and Health through
Interdisciplinary Research
Parminder Raina, PhD
Professor, Department of Clinical Epidemiology & Biostatistics
McMaster University
Lead Principal Investigator, Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging
Recent advances in biosciences and population health herald exciting
opportunities to conduct high-impact population health research. On a
background of technological and scientific innovation, the Canadian
Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) is being launched as a program of
research and platform to investigate the complexities of the aging
process and improve our understanding of the transitions and
trajectories of healthy aging. The CLSA is a Canada-wide, 20-year
follow-up study of 50,000 people between the ages of 45 and 85 years at
baseline. It is a research initiative that bridges biological and
population sciences to create a future "Legacy Research Platform" that
will provide scientists with the resources essential to pursue
leading-edge research. The presentation by Dr. Raina will provide an
overview of the CLSA and opportunities for research nationally and locally.
Monday, March 30, 2009
12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m.
Theatre A
Basic Medical Sciences Building
730 William Ave.
Following Dr. Raina's presentation all are invited to reconvene in
S211 Medical Services Building
1:00 -- 3:00 p.m.
where Research Affiliates, faculty members, research staff and students
will have an opportunity for more in-depth discussions with Dr. Raina
following brief presentations by Peter Cattini, Associate Vice-President
(Research), Professor, Physiology, and Philip St. John,
Internal/Geriatric Medicine. Dr. Cattini will speak about the importance
of such large scale studies from his perspective as a basic scientist;
Dr. St. John will speak from the clinical perspective.
A light lunch will be served. Please RSVP (474-8754) by Tuesday March 24.
