Survey for Anthropology Graduate Students
On behalf of the American Anthropological Association's Committee on
Practicing, Applied, and Public Interest Anthropology (CoPAPIA), I am
writing to request your assistance in distributing the AAA online 2009
survey of Masters graduates in anthropology to your own alumni. We
launched the survey earlier in this month. Your assistance in
distributing the link to the survey and encouraging your alumni to
complete it is essential to its success.
An information page about the survey is found on the AAA web site at:
http://www.aaanet.org/cmtes/copapia/MAalumnisurvey.cfm. The direct link
to the survey itself is also on this page. You may send either this page
link or the direct survey link to your alumni.
The genesis of the survey comes from a number of different interests.
The AAA would like to connect with more Masters alums with regard to
planning services, programs, and benefits. Departments of anthropology
nationwide graduate over 1,000 Masters students per year and yet we know
very little about their careers, their educational experience, and their
needs for organizational affiliation. We have learned that departments
of anthropology would like feedback on their graduate programs'
usefulness as their graduates pursue careers in the broad array
specializations characteristics of the discipline.
In creating the survey, we engaged the advice of an extensive Advisory
Network to provide feedback from all specialties across anthropology. We
are sending the link to academic departments that grant MA degrees, as
well as a number of other groups and list serves. (A list of members of
the Advisory Network is found on the web page mentioned above.)
Results from the survey will be published through the AAA, including the
Anthropology Newsletter and the AAA web site. Individual respondents can
request a copy of the survey report as well. Analysis will begin in fall
2009 and the report is expected at the end of 2009 or early 2010.
The anonymous survey takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes to complete.
Queries can be directed to MASurvey2009(a)aaanet.org
<mailto:MASurvey2009@aaanet.org>.
Those who wish to go directly to the survey (without going through the
CoPAPIA page) can go to the following URL:

*Distinguished Speaker Lecture: "The Road to Stockholm: A Nobel

*"The Road to Stockholm: A Nobel Mission"
LOUIS J. IGNARRO, Nobel Laureate
Distinguished Professor of Pharmacology, UCLA*
Dr. Louis J. Ignarro is a Distinguished Professor of Pharmacology at the
UCLA School of Medicine and winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Medicine
for his groundbreaking discovery of the importance of Nitric Oxide in
cardiovascular health. This discovery made it possible to develop and
market Viagra, the first oral medication for the effective treatment of
erectile dysfunction. As a result of his role in this blockbuster drug,
Dr. Ignarro is sometimes known as "the Father of Viagra".
For nearly 30 years, Dr. Ignarro's research has focused on the role of
Nitric Oxide in the cardiovascular system. Among the most significant
contributions from Dr. Ignarro's wealth of research is the discovery
that Nitric Oxide is produced in the blood vessels and controls the flow
of blood by signaling the vessels to expand and contract.

Your ability to get healthy and stay that way depends on who you are.
Some Canadians are more vulnerable to ill health than others because of
determinants like their gender, income, education, race/ethnicity,
Aboriginal status, sexual orientation, or where they live. These
determinants also shape Canadians? access to primary health care (the
provision and coordination of health services that are responsive to
community needs). If there?s no one-size-fits-all model, how can we
ensure that Canadians have equitable access to primary health care? How
can we design a health care system that protects against vulnerability?
Please join us for a stimulating discussion with health experts about
access to primary health care for vulnerable populations.
The expert speakers featured on the panel are:
**Dr. Sherry L. Grace**, Scientist, Division of Behavioural Sciences &
Health, Toronto General Research Institute
**Dr. Stephen W. Hwang**, Associate Professor, Department of Medicine,
University of Toronto
**Anna Travers**, Director, Rainbow Health Ontario
The event is co-moderated by **Dr. Colleen Flood**, Scientific Director,
CIHR?s Institute of Health Services and Policy Research, and *Dr. Joy
Johnson*, Scientific Director, CIHR?s Institute of Gender and Health.
If you have accessibility needs, please contact the organizers and we
will do our best to accommodate you.
/What is CIHR?/
The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is the Government of
Canada?s agency for health research. CIHR?s mission is to create new
scientific knowledge and to catalyze its translation into improved
health, more effective health services and products, and a strengthened
Canadian health-care system. Composed of 13 Institutes, CIHR provides
leadership and support to more than 11,000 health researchers and
trainees across Canada. www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca <http://www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca>

**Objectives:* *
The CGS-FSS program will support high-calibre Canadian graduate students
in building global linkages and international networks through the
pursuit of exceptional research experiences at research institutions
outside of Canada. By accessing international scientific research and
training, CGS-FSS recipients will contribute to strengthening the
potential for collaboration between Canadian universities and affiliated
research institutions and universities, or other research institutions
outside of Canada.
**Value and Duration of Supplements: * *
The value of the CGS-FSS is up to $6,000, based on the information and
budget justification provided in the application. A defined research
study period would normally be three to six months.

application; and
-hold an active Canada Graduate Scholarship at the Master's or Doctoral
level or a Vanier CGS
Successful applicants must maintain full-time graduate research studies,
and an active CGS or Vanier CGS during the course of their CGS-FSS
supplement funded activities in order to remain eligible. Eligible
applicants can only take up one CGS-FSS while they hold an active CGS or
Vanier CGS and must do so within one year of receiving the appropriate
notification of award letter.
The Faculty of Graduate Studies internal deadlines are *May 11, 2009 and
