CALL FOR PAPERS
Religious Houses: A Legacy
International Conference
Religious Houses: A Legacy
October 7 - 10, 2009 - Montreal and Quebec City, Canada
CALL FOR PAPERS
The purpose of this international conference is to identify and
understand innovative heritage possibilities for the future of convents,
monasteries, and -- more generally -- religious houses in Quebec, the
rest of Canada, and Western society. By comparing cases and putting
them in theoretical, historical, and geographical perspective, we hope
to make a contribution to what these urban and rural architectural
groupings become. We thus aim to examine specific ways of implementing
the proposals and studies conducted in Quebec and to share these
experiences in order to identify and explore, but mostly, to help solve
some of the problems raised in Western societies.
To this end, the conference will attempt to bring together researchers,
professionals and decision-makers from Norther America and Europe, who
have shown particular ability to assess or implement new and original
solutions, or who, through historical or epistemological reflections on
the problems arising in the secularization, conversion, or governance of
former religious houses, are able to contribute to a discussion of the
financial, legal, urban planning or memorial implications of changes in
the vocation of religious houses and their redevelopment.
Interested researchers and professionals are invited to submit a
participation proposal before February 28, 2009. Submissions, including
an abstract (title and 300-word description) and brief summary, are to
be sent to the attention of:
Dr. Lucie K. Morisset, chair of the Scientific Committee
by email: Institutdupatrimoine(a)uqam.ca <mailto:Institutdupatrimoine@uqam.ca>
or by mail:
Institut du patrimoine
Université du Québec à Montréal
C.P. 8888, Succ. Centre-ville
Montréal (Québec) H3C 3P8
Canada
After assessment by the Scientific Committee, authors will be notified
of the acceptance of their proposals by March 31, 2009. Please note
that the Organizing Committee is prepared to pay for travel expenses of
a certain number of speakers.
For full details on this event and contact information, please contact

*Invitation to Participate in Study Survey*
The purpose of* this survey*
<http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=qwAQQy0_2bGPpEJLIIYXWYkQ_3d_3d>
is to gather information from graduate students in *Universities across
Canada*.
The objective of this study is to create knowledge in the social
sciences and post-secondary communities about social support systems,
both formal and informal, that graduate students in social sciences can
access while completing their degrees. Another objective of the study is
to understand career goals and pathways to these goals for graduate
students in social sciences. Challenges and barriers to these goals will
be explored.
The study is being conducted by 2 researchers, one who is an Assistant
Professor with the University of Manitoba. Marlene Pomrenke (PhD) has
her doctorate in social work and works at the Student Counselling and
Career Centre at the University of Manitoba. Carolyn Peters (MSW) is
currently completing her doctoral program at the Faculty of Social Work,
University of Manitoba.
This study involves filling out a survey about your current support
systems as well as your career goals upon completing your degree.

Community and Collaborative Art Practices
The 9th Annual Art History Graduate Student Association Symposium
Symposium Date: March 6, 2009
Submission Deadline: January 17, 2009*
The Art History Graduate Student Association at York University will be
hosting its 9th Annual Symposium on Friday, March 6, 2009. Graduate
students and recent graduates in Canada, the United States, and abroad
are invited to submit proposals.
This symposium focuses on the centrality of human participation in
contemporary art practice. It seeks to engage with the ethics, the
aesthetics, and the politics of community-based and collaborative art.
We are interested in presenting papers stemming from the visual arts,
theatre, architecture, dance, film production, and other disciplines.
This symposium aims to critically address questions posed by cultural
historians and critics concerning the implications in collaborative art
projects. Such questions include: How does active participation
influence aesthetics? Does collaborative art practice, with its social
interactions, shared assumptions and invisible rules, push or hinder the
limits of relationality? How does the integration of human
participation impact upon works of art? How has the proliferation of
outdoor art festivals such as Nuit Blanche in Paris, Montreal, and
Toronto permanently affected the way contemporary artists produce work?
How has the response to such large-scale exhibitions influenced art
practice? How has public or private art funding reflected this
increased interest in accessible art? Do such art practices allow for
the empowerment of communities and participants? How might the inclusion
of community-based projects in institutions like museums, cinemas, and
concert halls impact their criticality?
Presentations that touch upon questions relating to community and
collaborative art practice in the following sub-themes are encouraged:
. artist collaborations and interventionist works
. authorship and cultural property
. developments in Relational Aesthetics
. legalities of human participation
. theories of time, space, and place
. embodiment and performance studies
. activism and social welfare
. the politics of inclusion
. accessibility issues
We invite emerging scholars to submit proposals that engage with any of
these issues by sending a 300-word abstract of your paper, curriculum
vitae, email address, and contact information by Friday, January 17,
2009 to:

Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation
The Foundation was formed in 1990 to honour those women through
scholarships and to encourage more Canadian women to pursue careers in
engineering.
Since its inception, nearly 100 women studying engineering at Canadian
universities have been able to continue their studies with CEMF's
support. The generosity of CEMF's donors and supporters now allows for
14 annual scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $15,000 at the
undergraduate, masters and PhD levels of study to be awarded to Canadian
women. The Foundation will celebrate its 20th Anniversary in 2010 with a
new undergraduate scholarship.
Winners are honoured at the Annual CEMF Awards Luncheon held in
conjunction with the Engineers Canada Annual General Meeting and are
featured in a promotional brochure sent to universities, provincial
associations, donors and stakeholders across the country.
Scholarship recipients are selected based on their strong leadership
abilities and their ability to act as ambassadors for the engineering
profession to young girls. CEMF scholarship winners are extraordinarily
outstanding women who wear the role model mantle with pride.
Deadline for applications for the 2009 CEMF Scholarships is *January 16,
2009.*

*STUDENT RESEARCH ASSISTANTS REQUIRED *!
_Title of Study: _
*Understanding the Work of Nurse Practitioners:*
*Exploring Discourse, Transactions, and Actions with Patients *
*through Video-Tape Analysis*
_Project Background:_
This research study is being conducted to understand and measure what
happens in the practice of Nurse Practitioners. That is, what is it

build relationships with adult patients? Video data is currently being
collected during repeat encounters between NP's and their
patients/clients.
_Research Assistant's Role:_
The videotaped data will permit several analyses one of which is
application of the Davis Observation Code (DOC). The DOC is a 20 item
scale originally developed to measure the content of physician-patient
interactions in family practice. The RA will explore key behaviors
related to illness and lifestyle modification within the NP-patient
interaction. This study will be the first of its kind to apply the DOC
to NP-patient encounters.
*Start date: Feb 2009*

New Social Inquiry is an open access, peer-reviewed, online publication
dedicated to bridging academic social science inquiry with other ways of
asking and answering questions about our social worlds. Our aim is to

accessible to a wide audience, engaging and relevant for
non-specialists, yet sophisticated and complex enough to push
scholarship forward. NSI sees academics as entrusted with the
responsibility- and the privilege- to contribute to public dialogue. The
work published in NSI assumes that the potential for engagement with
complex issues exists beyond the walls of the university, and that both
laypeople and experts are equipped to contribute to social inquiry and
criticism in meaningful ways.

Students from other disciplines are also encouraged to
attend/participate, especially since many research topics are
interdisciplinary in nature. This symposium is designed to allow
students to network with other researchers, labs, and universities; and
to meet with other students studying in their field or similar fields.
During the symposium, the students will have the opportunity to attend a
banquet and keynote talk given by Dr. Bill Cade, president of the
University of Lethbridge.
Students will also have the opportunity to meet University of Lethbridge
faculty and learn about post-secondary opportunities at our institution
during the beer and pizza poster session. We encourage everyone to
attend and to help make the upcoming PUBS yet another success. Due to
the lack of food venues open on campus during reading week and the lack
of restaurants on the West side of Lethbridge, we highly encourage
attendees to purchase lunch tickets. Registration is now open through
our website (www.pubs2009.com). Registration will remain open until
*January 9, 2009* with abstracts also due January 9, 2009. Please find
attached the official letter of invitation and flyers to be distributed
Thank you, The PUBS 2009 Organizing Committee

*Eleventh Annual Graduate Student Research Conference
Department of Sociology and Equity Studies in Education
Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of
Toronto (OISE/UT)*
*The Fecundity of Recognition
**The Self/Other in Politics, Sociality, Ethics, and Critique*
Saturday, April 4th, 2009 -- 8:30am to 5:30pm
We find ourselves in an in-between geography, flanked between a
transcendental possibility to separate inherited -- historically,
politically, socially -- subjectivities from the power that binds itself
to them and the immanent struggle to negotiate within and across that
power. We find ourselves, as well, amidst the uncanny geography of lost
objects, recaptured desires, and violative engagements with one another,
both in our everyday social and political terrains. The impulse to
imagine such a metaphorical or allegorical geography or, let us call it
another word, landscape, finds itself nestled, unsettlingly, in the
realm of what one might be bequeathed to call, invoke, and name as the
possibility or impossibility of/for recognition -- the violent look, the
lascivious gaze, the at-once both recuperative and destructive knowledge
of the encounter between self and other, within the ever traducing logic
of a power that is both evaded and restored in these encounters.
Ultimately, we might charge "recognition" -- the moment of the encounter
or the instance of power -- as that which allows us to think carefully
about discursive politics, complicated terrains of sociality, ruptured
yet rapturous ethics, and a critique yet-to-happen.
The purpose of this conference is to address, therefore, the productive,
generative, and non-productive utterances and tendencies that exist in
the moment of the encounter -- whether we are to consider it in light of
Hegel's age-old dialectical encounter between the master and the slave
or Fanon's re-working of Hegel's age-old dialectical encounter by
inserting, necessarily so, the question of race and gender into that
meeting between self and other, or again, perhaps our consideration
might lead us to Levinas's ethics of the other where we are to learn
from the possibilities and impossibilities inscribed in the act of
responsibility as we know it that may or may not be arrived at in the
encounter between self and other, or yet again, we might be entering
into the terrain of Ahmed's unsettling of Levinas through an addressing
of what it means to engage in strange and uncanny encounters where we
claim to be responsible and ethical, but fall short on this task,
necessarily and inevitably so -- an important point to contemplate upon.
In all these and several other moments of theoretical incursions, we are
called upon to understand how recognition, both in its tacit and its
explicit permutations and formulations, allows us to have a better
understanding of political subjectivity, social existence, psychic
disillusionments, and ethical quandaries.
Another moment for us to pause and take stock of recognition causes us
to enter that heady -- no irony or pun intended, here -- terrain called
the "body". What happens to the body in such encounters? How do we take
account of moments such as empathy, anger, or vulnerability in the
context of how it affects a body in the moment of being recognized as
either "normative" or otherwise? Where do we go from here -- politically
or otherwise -- when we address the world of law, the world of psychic
struggles, the harsh ways in which we are forced to separate mind and
body, to become or be named as falling either in the category of a
"rational" subject or an "irrational" aberration? In turning our
attention toward theories of recognition, what this conference, amongst
the several other aspirations it might have, hopes to address is the
split between rationality and irrationality, the rupture between mind
and body, as though these things exist outside of one another. The
rupture needs to be unearthed, addressed, and troubled -- both its
violence and its purpose. We are attempting here to link embodiment with
theories of recognition as has been done in the realm of critical social
theory within the place of, to name a few, feminist theory, queer
theory, critical race theory, critical disability studies, Marxist
theory, psychoanalysis, Foucauldian instigations that examine power and
discipline, law, ethics, and political philosophy. When, in the final
analysis, perhaps, does the body become accounted for, if ever in the
act of recognizing other as "other", wholly other or absolutely other --
either by state-sanctioned violence or in the everydayness of
discriminatory practices that prevent subjects from merely being?
It is with these concerns and considerations in mind that the Graduate
Student Conference Committee of the Department of Sociology and Equity
Studies in Education at the University of Toronto invites you to submit
either single paper or panel presentations on the broad topic of
recognition, as has been outlined here. The Committee will consider some
of the following expansive spaces of inquiry as relevant to the
overarching concerns of the conference, but, please also note that the
list below is by no means an exhaustive or conclusive one:
? Recognition in Space, Place, and Time
? Recognition and Racial Subjectivity
? Recognition and the Engendering of Gender
? Recognition in Queer Theory
? Recognition and Bodily Subjectivity in Critical Disability Studies
? Recognition of the Labour of the Classed Other in a time of Capital
? Gaze, Discourse, and the Other -- Anthropology and Sociology
Revisited
? Recognition and the Body, both proper and general
? Writing Recognition and Alterity in Literature and the Literary
? Recognition and the possibility of/for the Social and the Political
? Theorizing Recognition
? On a Violence borne of Recognition
? Annihilation of the Self
? Recognition at the borders of the Nation-State
? Recognition, Performance, and Performativity
? Psychoanalysis and Theories of Recognition

Summit of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago extends its greetings
and is pleased to announce the launch of the "Summit of the Americas
Essay Contest", within the framework of the Fifth Summit of the Americas
that will be held in Trinidad and Tobago on April 17-19, 2009.
The Essay Contest, directed to undergraduate or graduate students of the
OAS Member States <http://www.oas.org/documents/eng/memberstates.asp>,

Security and Environmental Sustainability
<http://www.summit-americas.org/SIRG/SIRG_0708/V_Summit_Draft_Decl_Commitmen…>/,

The objective of this initiative is to raise awareness of the Summits of
the Americas Process among youth, stimulating analytical ideas from
college and university students regarding the key issues of the region,
as well as encouraging the participation of different actors in the
process in the formulation of ideas and recommendations about the
central topics of the Fifth Summit. Essays will analyze the principal
areas engaged in this theme: a) human prosperity; b) environmental
sustainability; c) energy security; d) strengthening democratic
governance and e) strengthening the Summits Process. These topics
include some of the key priorities of the region, around which the
leaders of the hemisphere will center their attention in efforts to make
commitments that will improve the wellbeing of the citizens of the
Americas. The Contest will motivate the youth of the Americas to analyze
the region's challenges and formulate innovative solutions.
Essays will be accepted in the four OAS official languages (English,
Spanish, French, or Portuguese). A qualified jury comprised by
academics, high level specialists and experts of the member institutions
of the Joint Summit Working Group
