Christal ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *KAVANAGH-LAVERENDRYE GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP* * Research Fields* historical studies (see eligibility for other fields) *Categories* Social Sciences and Humanities *Citizenship* Unrestricted *Eligibility* The Martin Kavanagh-Pierre Gaultier LaVerendrye Fellowship at St. Paul's College was established in 1987 by Mr. Martin Kavanagh to continue study and research into the life, times, and influence of LaVerendrye, the great explorer of the Canadian West. Mr. Kavanagh believed that LaVerendrye deserves a greater place in the history of Western Canada than is sometimes acknowledged. He spent much of his time and efforts researching and writing about LaVerendrye, his colleagues, and his times. In the coming year the Kavanagh-LaVerendrye Fellowship will provide $3,000 for work on the life and times of LaVerendrye. Travel and hotel costs for the round trip are covered by the EUVP. As well, a per diem is paid to each participant to cover meals and incidentals. The EUVP is jointly supported and administered by the European Parliament and the European Commission. It has been in operation since 1974. A EUVP visit consists of an individual five- to eight-day programme of meetings with EU officials at the EU institutions in Brussels, Strasbourg and /or Luxembourg. All programmes are coordinated and arranged by the EUVP Secretariat in Brussels. Each visit is custom tailored to the wishes of each participant and takes place during the following year. The conference theme is on "New Horizons in Particle Research". The two day conference has oral presentations, poster and video sessions. The technical program will emphasize the key roles played by chemical engineers from Canada in developing innovative and value-added technologies and products for chemical, materials, agrochemical, biochemical, and pharmaceutical industries and energy and environmental sustainability. Participants learn how to diagnose problems, make common "field fixes" and understand troubleshooting advice from off-site technical advisors. On a background of technological and scientific innovation, the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) is being launched as a program of research and platform to investigate the complexities of the aging process and improve our understanding of the transitions and trajectories of healthy aging. The CLSA is a Canada-wide, 20-year follow-up study of 50,000 people between the ages of 45 and 85 years at baseline. It is a research initiative that bridges biological and population sciences to create a future "Legacy Research Platform" that will provide scientists with the resources essential to pursue leading-edge research. The presentation by Dr. Raina will provide an overview of the CLSA and opportunities for research nationally and locally. This award is based on overall academic excellence through coursework, research, awards and distinctions, letters of reference, external examiner's report and a description of the student's statement on the significance of their research.
