Message from Dr. Kelley Main, Dean, Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies
Date: January 14, 2026
To: Department Heads, Graduate Chairs, Graduate Award Contacts
Cc: Deans of Faculties/Schools/Colleges with Graduate Programs
Subject: 2026-2027 University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship (UMGF) Allocations
Please find attached the preliminary allocations for the University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowships (UMGFs) for the 2026-2027 academic year. Allocations are based on the average enrolment over the previous two (2) years for Master’s and four (4) years for PhD.
Additionally, please find attached a copy of the 2026-2027 UMGF<https://umanitoba.sharepoint.com/sites/um-intranet-graduate-studies/Shared%…> Unit Guidelines<https://umanitoba.sharepoint.com/sites/um-intranet-graduate-studies/Shared%…>, as well as the University of Manitoba Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Award Holder’s Guide <https://umanitoba.sharepoint.com/:f:/r/sites/um-intranet-graduate-studies/S…>
for your reference.
UMGF 2026-2027
October 1, 2026– final deadline
July 31, 2026 – to be considered for Supplemental awards
Allocation notes:
An allocation of zero (0) refers to new UMGF awards. A Unit’s budgeted funds may already be committed to renewals for that year, and/or the Unit may not have recent enrolment to support a new award allocation.
Unit allocations have been rounded to the nearest whole number (any allocation less than 0.5 was rounded down).
In some cases, coordination at the “Budget Faculty” level of the allocations to small Units may be desirable. Individual Units participating in such coordination must be in agreement, and any resulting arrangement must be approved by the Faculty of Graduate Studies well in advance of any recommendations.
To use your allocation:
The process to submit a UMGF recommendation changed effective 2025-26 and varies slightly depending on whether you are recommending a current student or a student who is in the process of being admitted to UM.
If you have been authorized on behalf of your Unit to do so, and you have reviewed the UMGF<https://umanitoba.sharepoint.com/sites/um-intranet-graduate-studies/Shared%…> Unit Guidelines<https://umanitoba.sharepoint.com/sites/um-intranet-graduate-studies/Shared%…>, you may begin submitting recommendations for the 2026-27 UMGF award immediately using one of the following options:
1. Submit the UMGF recommendation with the admission recommendation via Slate.
This option is only available for newly admitted students.
2. Complete the online recommendation form available on our SLATE website –
UMGF Award Recommendation Form<https://applygrad.umanitoba.ca/register/?id=17b14a62-7720-429c-9574-d41121a…> (Unit use only)
This option is only available for current UM students.
Students can be referred to UMGF information and the Award Holder’s Guide on the FGPS website<https://umanitoba.ca/graduate-studies/funding-awards-and-financial-aid/univ…>.
Questions regarding UMGF recommendations and processing can be directed to FGPS Awards Office: Graduate.awards(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:Graduate.awards@umanitoba.ca>
Questions regarding the UMGF allocation process and budget can be directed to Danielle Moore, FGPS Awards Officer, at danielle.moore(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:danielle.moore@umanitoba.ca>
