The purpose of this graduate student support program is to enhance through "matching" funding the number of doctoral and master's students funded from tri-council grants. By increasing our competitiveness in attracting tri-council funds we increase the quota of tri-council scholarships available to our graduate students as well as our quota of Canada Research Chairs and indirect cost of research funds. As indicated in the program guidelines, the GETS program will be supported through baseline funds allocated in the 2011-2012 operating budget for the purposes of academic enhance ($350k) and the Faculty of Graduate Studies RA fund ($350k), which has been discontinued and rolled into this new funding program. The GETS program guidelines have been developed in consultation with the associate deans (research) / research liaison officers network. CIHR Canada Graduate Scholarships Master's Award 12-13 Competition

Please find attached information for the up-coming 2012-13 CIHR CGS Master's competition. The application process for the CGSM is via ResearchNet's electronic submission system. Applicants are to complete their application through ResearchNet, including uploading their own official transcripts (NOTE: transcripts issued by the Registrar's Office to the student will be considered official. Opening the envelope to scan the transcript will not render it unofficial). After submitting their application electronically through ResearchNet, they are to print their complete application and submit a hard-copy to their respective departments. It is recommended that they also submit their official transcripts in case CIHR requests official copies, however, it is not obligatory. If students decide to keep their transcripts, they should ensure they have them available should CIHR request the originals. As in last year's competition, CIHR no longer requires departmental appraisals. However, while a departmental review is not required by CIHR, departments are strongly encouraged to assist their students by reviewing applications to help students submit the best application possible. The Faculty of Graduate Studies is asking that departments please complete the departmental Ranking Sheets. *Please set a deadline date for which applications are to be submitted to your department. It is advised that a deadline be set at least 2 weeks prior to the Faculty of Graduate Studies' deadline, which is _December 8, 2011_*to ensure there is adequate time to review applications, provide feedback and submit recommendations by the deadline. Please forward the strongest applications along with the Departmental Ranking Sheets. For applications that departments do not recommend, do not send the applications, only send the "Not Recommended" Ranking Sheet with the list of names. Please do return both Ranking Sheets, even if there are no student names to list. This competition is set to be advertised either on Friday, 30 September, 2011 or Monday, 3 October, 2011. Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council 2012/2013 PGS/CGS Competition

Please find attached information from NSERC regarding the upcoming NSERC PGS/CGS competition as well as a frequently asked questions document. The application process for the Postgraduate Scholarships (PGS) and Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) programs is again a fully electronic submission system for this year's competition. Students will continue to complete their applications using NSERC's online system, but will no longer be required to print and sign paper copies. As in the past few competitions, NSERC no longer requires departmental appraisals. As a result we are not requesting that departments review and rank the applications prior to submission to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. While a departmental review is not required, departments are strongly encouraged to assist their students by reviewing applications, in particular the proposal, and helping students to submit the best application possible. New this year, NSERC is allowing us to permit online access to the NSERC applications to university representatives. Please contact me if you are interested in having one representative in your department provided with online access. Departments can use this access to ensure that their students' applications are complete, and to provide feedback to their students. There are two deadlines to note for the NSERC PGS/CGS competition; a transcript submission deadline and an online submission deadline. Applicants must submit official transcripts to all institutions attended in sealed envelopes to my attention at 500 University Centre October 3, 2011. This will provide me with time to upload transcripts so that students can submit their application electronically by our October 10, 2011 deadline.
