Undergraduate Lab Spaces

Students, During student orientation at the start of this academic year it was made clear to each of your classes that the Brass, Hart and wet lab areas are joint spaces used by dental and dental hygiene student groups and must be kept neat, clean and tidy at all times. After-hours access to lab spaces is a privilege not a right. Currently the college has supported the students' request to have these labs open after hours (10pm on Monday and 8pm Thurs-Fri). After hours and weekend access was negotiated to support student learning under the agreement that students would be mindful to keep the areas clean and neat. To note, most dental colleges do not allow after-hours lab access and if so, only with very reduced supervised hours. As you can see from the attached photos the wet lab (between Brass and Hart labs) has hit a new low on cleanliness. These photos were taken this afternoon, this is deplorable. Also, there was equipment that was left running and a hot glue gun that was left plugged in and heated. This is unacceptable and a building safety issue. The limit has been reached for having myself and your course coordinators reminding you of your responsibility to keep these spaces clean and tidy. Lab cleanliness includes * all counters clean and free of debris * the face of all cabinets free of debris * all equipment that is not in direct use is shut off * the model trimmer and basin are clean and free of debris * all plaster splash has been removed from the model vibrators * all sinks are clean and clear of debris * polisher is clean and the side basins are free of debris * all supplies have been replaced to their proper storage location * all personal equipment has been removed and stored appropriately * stone scales are clean and stored properly * countertop paper replaced daily or when it becomes overly soiled or wet * No food, drinks in lidded containers Starting immediately if any of the pre-clinical lab spaces are not clean and tidy, that space will be closed for after-hours access. You will all lose the privilege of after-hours access to the pre-clinical spaces. This will be one night or one weekend loss of access but could progress to full loss of afterhours/weekend access to all lab spaces if this is not corrected. You must also ensure that you are following the after-hours timings. Custodial services have indicated that students remain in the lab after agreed times and they are unable to complete their task responsibilities. Custodial services should not get to the point that they must call security to have you move out of the lab so they can do their job. This is not fair. Do not negotiate your exit timing with custodial staff. Exit the lab on time, period. The wet lab must be cleaned immediately. I will leave this space open tonight, so you have time to sort the space out appropriately. It will be assessed tomorrow and each day subsequently and if not clean the lab space will be locked for that evening or the full weekend. Dr. Reeve Trenna M. Clinical Updates - 6 October 2025

Dental Hygiene and Dental Students, Updates as follows: 1. For insurance pre-authorizations (CDCP, Blue Cross, NIHB etc.) you must indicate if a planned crown/denture is "Initial Placement". If not the initial placement, the PCCs need to know approximately when the initial was placed in order to submit the pre-authorization. If this detail is not included in the pre-authorization request it will be denied and returned requesting this information. Add these details to EHR notes when treatment planning is most helpful. You can also include the details in your email request for pre-authorization submission. 2. HC FUND Form * If you want to request the Exam and X-rays to be covered, you must include their codes and fees in the HC Form. * You must list all treatment codes, sites and associated cost in the HC Form. It is most helpful to list as follows: * 23 33111 one canal root canal $xxx.xx * 23 27201 ACC crown $xxx.xx * When calculating the Total Cost requested for the HCFUND, include all costs for the listed treatment. If the patient has CDCP coverage, calculate the co-pay amount. * Only treatment included under the CDCP Fee Guide that meets CDCP eligibility criteria and frequency limits is considered. 3. There is a new Screening Template Note to be used in axiUm going forward. Located under D3X5 (3rd year) and D4X5 (4th year). 4. Radiology Request Form - you must close the requisition for radiographs REQ ---> FIN (page 71-73 in axiUm orientation manual) 5. Ensure you are checking in and checking out your patients when seated and dismissed- it is students responsibility to do so as they are in constant communication with their patient, as well as for safety reasons (mentioned in Patient Management Orientation). Part time instructors have mentioned this helps them monitor which students to check in with first. And this is mandatory in case of a fire drill all people must be accounted for and we use axium to track this. 6. Students are not allowed to delete treatment that is put in EHR. A patient's chart is a legal documentation - correct process is to submit correction card for it. (page 74 in axiUm orientation manual and page 36 in Patient Management Orientation) 7. Students are coming into PCCs windows with their masks under their chin. They touch their masks many times when by the window. Masks should be removed before exiting the unit followed by hand sanitizing. PCCs will be noting when students come to the front desk with masks on and breaches will be followed up. 8. Albendazole for Humans

Albendazole is a widely used antiparasitic medication that plays a vital role in treating various worm infections in humans. It belongs to the benzimidazole class of drugs and is highly effective in eliminating intestinal and tissue-dwelling parasites. By interfering with the parasites’ ability to absorb glucose, Albendazole causes them to lose energy, eventually leading to their death and removal from the body. This medicine is prescribed for several parasitic infections, including roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and pinworms. It is also effective against more complex conditions such as hydatid disease caused by tapeworm cysts and neurocysticercosis, a serious infection of the nervous system triggered by pork tapeworm larvae. In many cases, Albendazole is preferred due to its broad spectrum of activity and relatively simple dosing regimen. The dosage of Albendazole depends on the type of infection being treated. For common intestinal worms, a single dose may be sufficient, while more severe infections may require extended courses. It is often taken with fatty foods to improve absorption. Doctors may adjust the dosage depending on the patient’s age, weight, and overall health. Albendazole is generally well tolerated, but mild side effects such as nausea, abdominal pain, headache, or dizziness may occur. Rarely, prolonged use can affect liver function or blood cell counts, so monitoring may be required in long-term treatments. For individuals in areas where parasitic infections are common, Albendazole provides an essential tool in reducing worm-related illness. However, it should only be taken under medical supervision to ensure safe and effective treatment. The child feeding room is equipped with a sink, fridge, microwave, change station, couch, table and toiletries for baby and parent. Opening Assembly - TOMORROW 6PM

Good afternoon, In preparation for the Opening Assembly ceremony tomorrow, please by in Brodie (by the elevator) no later than 5:45pm to line up. When you arrive, please line up in alphabetical order (by last name). Jean will be there to assist the Dental class, and Dawn will assist the Dental Hygiene class. The ceremony starts at 6:00pm, Dental Hygiene will enter first followed by Dentistry and then IDDP students. Please stay standing until everyone has entered and then take your seat, there will be blue folders on your seat with the Community Code of Conduct that will be read aloud with Dean Cholakis and Professor Bertone. Your names will be called to come up on the stage for donning of your white coat, please make sure your white coat is unbuttoned and draped over your left arm. Let me know if you have any guests that require special seating accommodations. See you tomorrow!
