Independent Student Analysis Survey

Hi everyone! I hope everyone had a great winter break! I'm reaching out to share the attached MMSA report from the 2024-2025 Independent Student Analysis (ISA). This report is a result of all the feedback we collected on the ISA Survey last year, so we'd like to thank everyone who participated last year! As a refresher, the ISA is a key component of the accreditation process for medical schools in Canada, completion of which is mandated by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS). The ISA survey focuses on several key aspects of our medical school experience, namely curriculum, student support services, learning environment, and facilities. It is student-led and the best opportunity to share feedback with the college regarding any concerns from the student body about the medical school experience. In the past, we've brought up components of the curriculum or student-life that have been, or are currently being addressed. Recent examples include changes to the Clinical Skills and Population Health curriculum, renovation of our lounge space, and funding for third-party study materials in clerkship. The Max Rady College of Medicine is set to undergo its accreditation in 2027. Student feedback plays a large role in their evaluation, and this year’s ISA report will be a key resource for them to ensure that feedback from the entire student body is heard. Because of this, it is crucial that everyone fills out the survey — This survey will be one of the most impactful sources of feedback that you will be able to provide during your degree, as it will be used both by UGME to prepare for the upcoming accreditation visit, as well as by the accreditors from CACMS as part of the accreditation process. The upcoming 2025-2026 ISA Survey will be launched at varying times for each class starting January 2026, and will follow the following timeline: Med 1s and Med 2s: March 2nd – March 31st, 2026. Med 3s: February 2nd – March 31st, 2026. Med 4s: January 5th – February 27th, 2026. There will be dedicated time blocked off for every class, either during the pre-clerkship curriculum, PDC, or TTR, to ensure that everyone has adequate time to complete the survey. The dates and times are as follows: Med 1s: Fri, March 6th, from 14:00-14:50 Med 2s: Fri, March 6th, from 13:00-13:50 Med 3s: Thu, March 19th, from 13:00-14:50 Med 4s: Mon, Feb 9th, from 12:00 to 12:50 A unique survey link will be sent out to each of you via email from messages-noreply(a)simplesurvey.com on the first day of the survey period. Camp Briardale - early exposure opportunity

Hi, Camp Briardale is a residential camp for children living with Type 1 diabetes run by Diabetes Canada as part of the dCamps program. It is hosted at BB Camp on Town Island in the Lake of the Woods (about a 15 min boat ride from Kenora). We take healthcare professional students in 2 roles - either as a "medical counsellor" or as a "midnight rambler". Both these positions offer the opportunity to learn about type 1 diabetes, living with a chronic illness, and being part of an interprofessional healthcare team. In addition - it is FUN! If you did not get to go to camp as a kid, this is your opportunity and if you have been to camp before this is your chance to go again! This year's camp dates are August 24-29 inclusive. There will also be training sessions on Friday Aug 21 (afternoon) and a full day on Saturday August 22. Camp is considered a 2 week early elective. Applications will be accepted early in the New Year with interviews early March. I have attached the staff handbook from last year as a FYI. You will find descriptions of the med counsellor and midnight rambler positions in it. As soon as the 2026 handbook is available and applications open, I will email your class again. Message from Dr. Butler - December 18 UM Closure and Exams, Pre-Clerkship

The following message is sent on behalf of Dr. Butler, Associate Dean, UGME: Hello, I am resending the memo regarding yesterday's UM closure as well as the UGME Deferred Examination Guidelines. Let me begin by expressing my understanding that yesterday was upsetting for most of you. Your colleagues in the MMSA have expressed these concerns to me directly and I have received several emails. I wish to give you all more context regarding the events and decisions: UGME was aware of the possibility of inclement weather well in advance and we planned for multiple contingencies. We sent emails advising students to plan for this. I was in communication with the UM Registrar on Wednesday PM regarding UGME exam plans. All indicators were that UM would remain open. UM Leadership at Central Campus made the decision to close the UM around 710 AM yesterday. The notice I received was by an email to all faculty & Staff. UGME immediately sent out an email to students that your exams were cancelled. We appreciate that many students were already on campus as they planned ahead; thank you for your diligence. Several directors and administrative staff met at 9 AM to discuss options as students were asking for immediate direction. Many exam options were discussed: 12/18 - UM closed, 12/19 - insufficient notice to bring in invigilators, 12/20-1/04 - winter break per UM Medicine calendar, 1/05 - remedial exam, 1/12 remedial exam, most of January - insufficient time, March spring break - student travel / rest. Per Deferral Guidelines, the UGME standard is for deferred exams in June (except CV1 & RS1). However, our hope is to pick a time relatively close to the modular courses and we identified time for Med1 on 1/16 and Med2 on 1/23. UGME must consider all students writing exams, including those with known accommodations. We must also adhere to policy and be mindful of union contracts, room bookings, and availability of staff. UGME recognizes that there are now two exams on 1/16 for Med1 and three (including small PF-EM2) on 1/23 for Med2. Some students may find this too much for one day and you may choose to defer your extra exam to June. On a one-time basis, UGME will waive section #9 and permit you to defer the NS1 or EM2/PF-EM2 and still write the regularly scheduled exams (MSK1 and GHN2) that day. Students concerned about their academic progress or whether they should defer exams should speak with Student Affairs, Remediation, and / or Student Services Bannatyne. Regarding section #2 line 1. UGME considers severe inclement weather / hazardous conditions and road closures as an emergency. This is rationale for deferral. If you require clarification, please discuss with Student Affairs. Finally, my expectation is that all of you conduct yourselves respectfully with UGME staff members, including email communication. My hope is that you can trust us to act on your behalf with respect to your busy curriculum, UM decisions / policies, and the safety of all involved. The original plan was for each group to review 7 videos that cover each of the commitments, and then we were going to spend the last 15 mins discussing the broader context for these videos. In reviewing all the videos it feels like you have done a great job providing important historical and cultural context for all of the commitments - and so there is no need for this debrief. I do want to provide a brief introduction for both of the groups - but can only be in one place at a time. I am going to start in Apotex 071 at 3 pm and provide 5 minutes of context prior to that group starting to watch the videos in sequence. I will then move to Apotex 050 - so the session for Apotex 050 will start at 3:06 (give me one minute to get there) and then you will start watching the videos around 3:11. When the videos are done the session will be finished. I will be moving back and forth between the theatres in case there are any questions. NOTE: Some activities have capacity limits.
