Educational Exposure Program

Hi everyone, I am writing to let you know about the Educational Exposure program, which aims to facilitate student input and collaboration with course leads to revise the current curriculum of various modular and longitudinal courses across M1 and M2. Currently, there are no courses that have specifically reached out to us looking for student input, but if there is a course that you are particularly interested in, or believe certain aspects could use revision, please reach out to the course leader and inquire whether they would be interested in collaborating with you on an educational exposure project for the course. Examples of previous educational exposures involve reviewing course materials to ensure diversity of patient cases, updating lectures to incorporate more visual examples of medical conditions, searching for relevant videos and articles to add to the list of supplementary resources for certain lectures, and reviewing literature to identify gaps in current curriculum. If you are interested or have any other questions regarding the program, please let me know! Once a project is completed, students will receive MSPR recognition for their hard work. I have attached a document that outlines the Educational Exposure program that you can pass on to instructors when inquiring, as well as the document involved in project registration. One medical student is required for each committee. Search committees would begin in November 2025 and run until Spring 2026 at the latest. The commitment will include attending 3-5 mandatory meetings in a hybrid setting, with the longest of these meetings being 1.5-2 hours in length. Please consider purchasing disability insurance. A student who suffers a disability may continue to incur living expenses. It is better to pay those expenses by collecting insurance rather than borrowing more on your Line of Credit (LOC). LOC Insurance, often called Loan Protector Insurance, is not guaranteed coverage and has limitations. Doctors Manitoba provides an exclusive disability insurance plan that is discounted and offered without a medical exam or other detailed health information. They offer this open enrollment between September 1 and October 31 each year. Hi Med 1s and 2s, You may or may not be aware that the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences has an Attire and Dress Code Guideline, which can be accessed below. This is a simple, short guideline providing reasonable direction. Part of this guideline relates to scents: 2.4 Scented products should be avoided, recognizing that some individuals have allergies and/or are sensitive to certain chemicals in scented products. Fragrances and other scented hygiene products shall not be used/worn in designated scent free zones. In areas that are not designated scent free zones, fragrances and scented hygiene products shall be used/worn in moderation and shall abide by any directions received in regard to the limitation or use of products with scents and/or fragrances to accommodate those with scent and/or fragrance allergies. In UofM classrooms and shared spaces on campus, please be mindful of those with allergies or sensitivities and try to avoid using scented products. Work on Additional Security and Safety Improvements Continue Along with the launch of the Shared Health Safe app we continue to work to make additional improvements to enhance safety and security on the HSC campus. As was shared earlier, two Winnipeg Police Service officers will be stationed at HSC to provide a visible presence 24-7 in the emergency department. More details to follow. Staff have shared positive comments about this announcement and we look forward to the WPS officers working with our HSC security officers to provided a tiered response to security concerns. Efforts have also been made to improve signage throughout the campus, including recently added Respectful Workplace signs that make clear the expectations of the public when they enter our facility and interact with staff. Work also continues to address concerns raised by staff regarding transit stops around the HSC campus. William Avenue Parkade Effective Wednesday, Oct. 15, the William Ave. parkade began using rapid roll up doors to help close down entry points into William Parkade. In addition to that step, HSC Parking Services also recently added: * Staff card access and visitor scan access to the southwest corner of William Ave. parkade. * Staff card access only at the northeast William Ave. parkade door across from the backdoor of the Ambulatory Care Clinic at 700 Elgin Ave. Additional improvements to the safety and security of our parking lots, including the addition of roll up doors in our other parkades will also take place in the coming weeks. Dr. Kerry Galenzoski Scholarship In 2024, Dr. Kerry Galenzoski established an endowment fund at the University of Manitoba. The purpose of the fund is to recognize and reward students for their work within the queer community in Community Psychiatry or outreach. Each year, beginning in 2025-2026, the available annual income will be used to offer one scholarship to an undergraduate student who: 1. is enrolled full-time in any year of study in the Undergraduate Medical Program in the Max Rady College of Medicine. 1. is in good standing. 1. has demonstrated their work within the queer community in Community Psychiatry or outreach. MMSA Fall Student Initiative Grants

Hey everyone, I am emailing you to inform you about the first round of the Student Initiative Grant (SIG) program for this academic year. The SIG program is an MMSA administered program that aims to fund new and exciting initiatives and projects developed by students. The ideal SIG application pitches an initiative that is creative, has the potential to benefit all four medicine classes, and has goals that are not already met by an existing program/event. The maximum amount that may be requested for a SIG application is $1000. Please see attached the SIG guidelines and application form for more information. The deadline for applications for the first round of SIGs will be October 31, 2025 at 11:59 pm CST. Within a few weeks of the deadline, applications will be assessed by a SIG committee consisting of myself, the MMSA treasurers, and a few other MMSA council members. Possible outcomes for a SIG application include receiving full funding, partial funding, or rejection. There will be a second and final round of SIGs in the spring! Each year, the William Carlos Williams competition receives hundreds of entries, which are judged by the Cleveland State University Poetry Center<https://www.csupoetrycenter.com/>. Categories and Prizes The WCW competition will be awarding prizes in two categories: 1. a medical student category, open to students enrolled in M.D. and D.O. programs in the U.S., Puerto Rico, or Canada, and 2. a physician category, open to any rank of physician (M.D. or D.O.) at any career stage, from residency to retirement, in the US, Puerto Rico, or Canada. Submissions will be judged on the merits of craft, originality, and content. Good morning Med 1 Students, At the beginning of the academic year, you were asked to complete a Pre-School Assignment. Paula and Jim have reviewed the assignments and compiled a summary as a result. Med 1 Introductory Career Development Assignment 2025 Feedback points for consideration: 125 students ( 87% out of 144 students of the whole class) submitted this assignment. 1. Journey to medical school: There is a wide diversity of backgrounds, experiences and environmental factors that were shared in response to this question. This variety is a strength for the cohort. We encourage you to tap into this potential by reaching out and building connections with members of your class. While each person's journey is unique, hearing about the experiences of others often leads to new ideas and possibilities that can be applied to your personal journey. 1. How would a family member or friend would describe your best strength(s): There were many wonderful examples of personal strengths, values and abilities provided in this category e.g. resilient, organized, empathetic, kind, hardworking, and many, many more! It may be helpful to see where your strengths and values fit in with the CanMed competencies<https://www.royalcollege.ca/en/standards-and-accreditation/canmeds.html> as well. 1. Have you identified an area of medicine you would like to practice in? There were many people who were able to identify an area of practice where they felt their interests and skill sets would fit. Specifically, 79% had identified an area of medicine for future practice (23 mentioned family medicine). At our Building a Meaningful Career, we spoke about the importance of recording and reflecting on your experiences to make informed career decisions. Please be sure to retain a copy of this assignment in your career portfolio, file, or journal, so you can refer to it add to it as you progress through medical school. Your reflections will prove very helpful in responding to frequently asked interview questions when you are applying for a residency position in the future.
