Over the past several years, these types of events have had limited uptake from the ever-shrinking media landscape in Winnipeg. Rather, sharing our research excellence successes via the many digital avenues that we have at our disposal, that we know are reaching our intended audiences in an effective way, is what we will focus on. This will provide an increased return on investment. Our combined social media channels reach an audience of 223,000 local, national and international readers - equivalent to one print and online Saturday edition of the Winnipeg Free Press. This is in addition to print media ads done throughout the year to highlight research excellence. Please mark December 5 on your calendar. Further details will be sent later. Dear Colleagues: For the CFI Innovation Fund competition, we have received 21 NOIs. As you know, we have invited the Project Leaders or a team member for each project to present their concept to the university community on June 13 and 15 (schedule is attached for your information). I have also attached the 21 NOIs for your review. I reviewed these myself and it took me 3 hours to review. I am not a fast reader so you probably will take less time. I request you, as the research leader in your Faculty/School, to review each NOI and then identify names in your own unit who should review that NOI and attend the presentation from the project team. I am sharing with all researchers the schedule of the presentations and have asked them to review the topics and contact you if they need a copy of one or more NOIs prior to the presentation date. This will identify additional names from your units. [ADR-RLO-Meeting] Sharing The Innovative Research of UM Graduate Students

Colleagues, Through their innovative research, our graduate students are changing the landscape around issues that are of global interest and importance, including the intersection of technology and medicine, influencing perceptions on climate change, and the future effects of antimicrobial resistance. Beginning on Saturday, April 28, we will be celebrating their innovative ideas through a media campaign focused on this year’s 13 Three Minute Thesis (3MT) finalists. Through these students, we’ll demonstrate the breadth and depth of research happening at the UM and the impact their work is having at the local, national and international level. The campaign will launch in the Globe and Mail and Winnipeg Free Press on Saturday, April 28. A preview of what will appear is attached. In addition, we will be featuring the individual research stories of six of the 3MT finalists through print and digital ads, social media, videos and special content created for the Front and Centre website. There will be other activities planned over the next several months to share these stories with our local and national alumni, community leaders and other key stakeholders. Barnard, Ph.D. President and Vice-Chancellor RE: Announcement: Distinguished Professor Dr. Digvir Jayas, Vice-President (Research and International) I am pleased to announce that Distinguished Professor Dr. Digvir Jayas has agreed to a two-year extension of his term as Vice-President (Research and International), to June 30, 2021. This extension was approved by the Board of Governors at its meeting of April 17, 2018. Dr. Jayas received his doctoral degree in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan in 1987, following a Master's Degree from the University of Manitoba in 1982 and an undergraduate degree from the G. B. Pant University in India in 1980, both in Agricultural Engineering. He has spent his career at the University of Manitoba, first as a faculty member in the Agricultural Engineering and Biosystems Engineering Departments, followed by a series of progressively senior leadership roles as Department Head, Associate Dean (Research), Associate Vice-President (Research) and Vice-President (Research and International), a role he has held since 2009. Dr. Jayas is consistent in his efforts to ensure that institutional decisions consistently reflect its interests as a research-intensive U15 university but also fit the needs of the University's research enterprise, including establishing supports for researchers intended to grow the success rate for grant applications, enhancing research funding supports provided by the university, advocating increased investment in graduate student support, leading successful application processes for research chairs, and changing the way in which intellectual property is managed. He has, through many conversations with researchers, department heads, Associate Deans (Research) and Deans, encouraged a strategic approach to pursuing research funding. In a similarly collaborative manner, he has led significant progress in pursuing the implementation of the research pillar of the University of Manitoba strategic plan (Taking our Place). Under his leadership, research funding has surpassed $190 million and research programs have been established to support interdisciplinary collaborations, incorporation of Indigenous knowledge and perspectives in research, and international collaborations. Dr. Jayas has generated notable success in advancing major initiatives on the University's behalf, such as the successful application processes for a Canada Excellence Research Chair and a Canada 150 Chair, the Churchill Marine Observatory and the development of the Smartpark Innovation Hub. He continues to advocate with government and industry for increased funding for research and to develop supports within the University that help researchers be successful. Dr. Jayas' areas of expertise are in drying, handling and storing grains and oilseeds and digital image processing for grading and processing operations in the Agri-Food Industry. His work has received global recognition and he has been the recipient of numerous awards and honours for his contributions. Among many others, he is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a Fellow of Engineers Canada, a Fellow of the Indian Society of Agricultural Engineers and a Foreign Fellow of both the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, India and the National Academy of Sciences, India. He is the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate from the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and a winner of both the Brockhouse Canada Prize for interdisciplinary research in science and engineering and the Dr. John M. Bowman Memorial Winnipeg RH Institute Foundation Award. Over his career, he has received almost $30 million in support for his research projects via grants and has authored or coauthored over 900 publications. He also is a member of numerous boards, committees, professional organizations and associations, which presently include ArcticNet, Cancer Care Manitoba Project Grants Committee, Engineers Canada, Genome Prairie, Manitoba Centre for Health Policy, NSERC Council, TRIUMF and Research Manitoba, among others. Dear Associate Deans (Research)/Research Liaison Officers: You are invited to attend a demonstration of SciVal on Monday, October 23rd from 10:30-12:00 in the Borger Boardroom (E1-270 EITC). SciVal is a web-based research metrics tool drawing on the Scopus publication database to provide quick and easy access to data on the research performance of individual researchers, research groups and institutions. SciVal has been used at the University to provide metrics to support several major institutional grant proposals, including submissions to the Canada Research Chairs, Canada Excellence Research Chairs and Networks of Centres of Excellence programs. The Office of Research Services has offered SciVal demonstrations and training sessions to Units across the University since our initial subscription in 2015 with the intention that it become widely used by administrators and the research community. As you may know, I have previously been the primary Office of Research Services contact for SciVal analyses and support; however, I will be away on maternity leave as of November 2017. Crista Gladstone, Projects Coordinator (Strategic Research Initiatives), will be the primary ORS contact for SciVal going forward from this time. Upon my return I will continue to be available to provide research metrics support for health-related proposals in my capacity as Research Grants Officer (CIHR). Please circulate this invitation to Department Heads; research and administrative staff who may be involved in utilizing the tool are also welcome to attend. Dear Associate Deans (Research)/Research Liaison Officers: Please be advised that CIHR Doctoral Research Awards and Post-Doctoral Fellowships require ORS approval prior to submission to CIHR through ResearchNet's eApproval sytem, and should be submitted in hard copy to ORS by the internal deadline with a completed Funding Application Approval Form (http://umanitoba.ca/research/ors/media/Funding_Application_Approval_Form.pdf). The internal deadline for CIHR Doctoral Research Awards<https://www.researchnet-recherchenet.ca/rnr16/vwOpprtntyDtls.do?prog=2700&v…> is September 26th, with a submission deadline of October 3rd. Please note that sponsor letters are not required to be included with the submission provided to ORS for the internal deadline, but must be submitted directly in ResearchNet 48 hours in advance of the submission deadline. The following email is sent on behalf of Dr. Digvir Jayas, Vice-President (Research and International) and Distinguished Professor: Dear All: In April of this year, a schedule of ADR/RLO meeting dates for 2017/2018 was distributed to ADR/RLOs, as well as to Research Grant Officers, Research Facilitators, and others. Following consultation and feedback with ADR/RLOs last term, I would like to try utilizing ADR/RLO meetings differently this year. Specifically, I would like to hold smaller meetings primarily with ADR/RLOs. I anticipate that as future agendas are assembled and finalized that it will be beneficial for Research Grant Officers, Research Facilitators, or others to also attend; please keep this year's schedule of meetings in your calendar. Therefore, unless indicated otherwise, this year's ADR/RLO meetings will consist of the VP (Research and International), the AVP (Research), the AVP (Partnerships), and the ADR/RLOs. If a meeting is dedicated to research in, say, one of the three Tri-agency areas, i.e., humanities and social sciences, natural sciences and engineering, or health sciences, then only a subset of the ADR/RLOs may wish to attend. Also, if a particular topic requires the presence of one or more research facilitators or other personnel, we will invite them to that particular meeting, as needed. Thank you. Digvir S. She joins Jackie Cooney-Birch, Research Grants Officer (CIHR) in service delivery of grant applications from federal and international health-related agencies.
