*Invitation to Participate in a Food Study*
Researchers from the University of Manitoba invite you to participate in
the following food studies:
_*B*_*_arley Tortilla Study_*
This study is designed to determine the glycemic response of barley
tortillas in healthy volunteers. You will be asked to attend 6 visits
one week apart for 3.5 hours per visit for product testing. To
participate, you must be between the ages of 18 to 40 years and have no
chronic or acute medical conditions or allergies to barley. Blood
samples will be taken.
*_Buckwheat Cracker Study_*
This study is designed to determine the glycemic response of buckwheat
crackers in healthy volunteers (no chronic or acute medical conditions)
and volunteers with type 2 diabetes (diet controlled). You will be asked
to attend 4 visits one week apart for 3.5 hours per visit for product
testing followed by consumption of buckwheat crackers daily for 7 days.
To participate, you must be between the ages of 18 to 70 years and have
no allergies to eggs, buckwheat, rice flour, or the sugar substitute
Splenda. Blood samples will be taken.
Your involvement in these studies is strictly voluntary. Your identity
and the data collected will be kept confidential. An honorarium will be

Attached are the NSERC Doctoral Prize Call for Nominations and checklist
for the upcoming competition. Please post the announcement and bring it
to the attention of faculty members advising Ph.D. students. As in the
past, NSERC awards prizes in two categories only: Engineering and Sciences.
I have asked Dr. Peter Graham, Associate Dean of Science to chair the
selection for the best thesis in the Science category. Eligible
Faculties may submit a maximum of one nomination to the Faculty of
Science by their deadline of September 14, 2009. Each Faculty is
required to set an internal deadline in order to meet the Faculty of
Science deadline of September 14, 2009. The Faculty of Science will
forward one recommended nomination to Graduate Studies by September 22,
2009. If you have thesis submissions from students in your faculty,
please contact Dr. Graham and inform him of your faculty's submission
and ask to be included as a member of the selection committee.
The Faculty of Engineering has agreed to coordinate the NSERC Doctoral
Prize nomination for the Engineering category. Departments may submit
one recommended nomination to The Faculty of Engineering by September
14, 2009. The Faculty of Engineering will submit one recommended
Engineering nomination submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies by
September 22, 2009.

Manitoba Water Stewardship has established an annual scholarship at the
University of Manitoba, to assist graduate students in Manitoba to
pursue studies and undertake research in water-related issues in Israel.
Established as part of a larger cooperative initiative on water
management between Manitoba and Israel, the goal of the award is to
strengthen international co-operation and support scholarly development
on a range of water resource issues as well as offering young Manitobans

The Faculty of Graduate Studies would like to bring the following

Canada Graduate Scholarship Foreign Study Supplement (CGS-FSS)*
As announced by the Government of Canada in Budget 2008, the federal
granting agencies will be administering the Canada Graduate Scholarships
Foreign Study Supplements (CGS-FSS).
The program will be administered by Canada's federal granting agencies -
SSHRC, NSERC and CIHR. A total of 250 CGS-FSS awards will be available
and divided among the three granting agencies.
**Objectives:* *
The CGS-FSS program will support high-calibre Canadian graduate students
in building global linkages and international networks through the
pursuit of exceptional research experiences at research institutions
outside of Canada. By accessing international scientific research and
training, CGS-FSS recipients will contribute to strengthening the
potential for collaboration between Canadian universities and affiliated
research institutions and universities, or other research institutions
outside of Canada.

*Value and Duration of Supplements: * *
The value of the CGS-FSS is up to $6,000, based on the information and
budget justification provided in the application. A defined research
study period would normally be three to six months.
**Eligibility:* *
To be eligible to apply for the CGS-FSS program, applicants must:
-be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada;
-be registered at an eligible Canadian institution at the time of
application; and
-hold an active Canada Graduate Scholarship at the Master's or Doctoral
level or a Vanier CGS
Successful applicants must maintain full-time graduate research studies,
and an active CGS or Vanier CGS during the course of their CGS-FSS
supplement funded activities in order to remain eligible. Eligible
applicants can only take up one CGS-FSS while they hold an active CGS or
Vanier CGS and must do so within one year of receiving the appropriate
notification of award letter.
The Faculty of Graduate Studies internal deadlines are *May 11, 2009 and
September 10, 2009.* Students are encouraged to apply for the May
competition, as the quota may be filled before the September

Participants for Research Wanted
"The efficacy of acupuncture in relieving delayed onset muscle soreness
(DOMS) in healthy human adults."
Volunteers are required for a research study to be conducted at the
School of Medical Rehabilitation (Bannatyne Campus). We are looking for
healthy individuals between 18-50 years of age.
Participants will be required to attend three sessions. The first and
last visits will be under 25 minutes long, and the second visit will be
about 50 minutes.
