Slide Filing Cabinets available from Professor Emeritus Jim Teller

Good morning everyone, Professor Emeritus Jim Teller has asked me to let you all know that he donated his 35 mm (mostly teaching) slide collection to the U of M Library. Slides are now being digitized, and images and the labelled slides will be available from U of M Archives early in the new year. He had housed the ~3000 slides in 15 wood cabinets in his office, and some of these cabinets are now available (free) from the Library; they measure 15 cm high x 30 cm wide x 45 cm deep and each has separate slots (in 5 rows) for 250 35-mm slides. Hello everyone, Today marks my final day as Acting Dean, and I wanted to quickly thank you all for your efforts, energy, and patience over the past year plus. In that time, we’ve had to address a variety of unexpected challenges, and we’ve started to think about doing things in new ways. This is never easy. That said, it is clear what we can do as a faculty when the opportunity arises, as highlighted by our recent success with the Impact Plus Chairs. We are so much more when we work together. Mario Pinto, Vice-President (Research and International) Dear Colleagues, Following the success of last year's event, we are excited to welcome the Undergraduate Research Showcase (URS)<https://umanitoba.ca/research/opportunities-support/undergraduate-research-…> back on Thursday, October 22, 2026. The URS gives undergraduate students an opportunity to share the research, creative work, and innovative ideas they have developed throughout the year. The success of the URS would not be possible without the support of our volunteer judges. We are inviting you to volunteer a few hours of your time to evaluate and celebrate the work of our undergraduate students. This year, the URS will feature three presentation streams: Oral Presentation Stream Students will have up to three minutes to present their research using a format of their choice. Poster Presentation Stream Students will present their research through a poster and engage with judges during the scheduled judging period. Innovation Stream (New) Our new Innovation Stream will provide students with an opportunity to showcase innovative projects and ideas in a more interactive format. Presentations will be primarily oral and demonstration based and will be held in the new IDEA START Program space in University Centre (Room 151, 1st Floor). Event Details Date: Thursday, October 22, 2026 Location: University Centre, Fort Garry Campus Judging Time: 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Judging Period: Judges will be assigned a two-hour window closer to the event. Prizes: Students will compete for $7,500 in cash prizes Presentation Categories: * Applied Sciences * Health Sciences * Natural Sciences * Social Sciences and Humanities * Creative Works Judges for the Oral and Poster Presentation Streams will evaluate approximately 4 to 6 students within their selected stream and category. Caretaking changes

Good morning, Please note that your building will be transitioned to the new office cleaning program beginning Monday, August 24th in preparation for the Fall term. These changes support the goals of the Campus Cleanliness Plan. A new intranet page outlines our caretaking services and definitions: Cleaning services<https://umanitoba.sharepoint.com/sites/um-intranet-facilities/SitePages/Cle…>. Should you have any questions or concerns regarding your office space, please contact fg-caretaking(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:fg-caretaking@umanitoba.ca> and we can assess the space with you. Key changes include: * Office cleaning will move to a once-weekly full clean of floors, completed during the afternoon/evening shift (2:00 p.m.–10:15 p.m.). * Individual desk-side waste and recycling bins will no longer be emptied individually. Office occupants will need to empty their own bins into designated three-stream waste collection stations located in hallways or in shared spaces. * See maps<https://umanitoba.sharepoint.com/sites/um-intranet-sustainability/SitePages…> for three-stream hallway waste collection stations. * For units and individuals that require temporary continuation of desk-side garbage collection, a green tag system will be implemented. Good afternoon, Caretaking Services will be implementing several operational changes to office cleaning in the coming weeks, in preparation for the Fall term. These changes support the goals of the Campus Cleanliness Plan. You will be contacted with a date for when your building will be transitioned, approximately one week in advance. Key changes include: * Office cleaning will move to a once-weekly full clean of floors, completed during the afternoon/evening shift (2:00 p.m.-10:15 p.m.). * Desk-side waste and recycling bins will no longer be emptied individually. This course, offered through the Division of Extended Education in collaboration with the Office of Equity Transformation, is offered to all UM staff, students, and faculty at no cost to learners. This is an important milestone for our institution, and an exciting opportunity for us to celebrate together across the UM community. Later this week, President Benarroch will invite all staff and faculty to mark their calendars and take part in this historic year. His message will include a link to the new UM150 website (which will go live very soon!), where you'll find an early list of programming, key dates, and contact information for the planning team should you have questions or ideas about how your area would like to get involved. For your convenience, a printable Save the Date page is also attached. External Relations is leading the planning efforts for institution-wide events and initiatives throughout 2027. For those of you who have already booked one of our UM150 roadshow presentations...thank you! REGISTRATION NOW OPEN: 2026 Summer Institute for Literacy in Indigenous Content

***Shared on behalf of Cary Miller, Indigenous Studies*** Greetings campus community, I am pleased to announce that registration is now open for the 2026 Summer Institute for Literacy in Indigenous Content. This year marks the 7th annual offering of the program, which has supported more than 500 participants in successfully completing the training. The Institute will run Tuesday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., May 12 to July 28. Research demonstrates that learning of this nature is most effective when delivered over an extended period rather than as a one-time event. With this in mind, we encourage participants to attend as many sessions as possible. Participants that successfully complete the program will receive a certificate of completion recognizing their professional development. Most sessions will be held via Zoom and will be recorded for those who may need to catch up. However, two sessions will be held in person and will not be recorded. These in‑person commitments include: * May 12 at Migizi Agamik, Fort Garry Campus * A full day in community at Brokenhead Reserve on Friday, June 12th. (transportation provided to and from the Fort Garry Campus) The Zoom link will be available on the UMLearn course site. There is no cost to participate. The purpose of the Summer Institute is to support the implementation of TRC Call to Action #57, which calls upon public servants to receive education on the history of Indigenous peoples, including residential schools, Treaties, Indigenous rights, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Indigenous law, and Indigenous–Crown relations. The training also incorporates skills‑based learning in intercultural competency, conflict resolution, human rights, and anti‑racism. In addition, the Institute is designed to assist faculty in integrating Indigenous content into their courses—an expectation outlined in the University of Manitoba’s current strategic plan. Through discussion and practical guidance, participants will explore topics such as selecting course materials, developing syllabi, and facilitating conversations about race in the classroom. We encourage Deans and supervisors to recognize participation in this program as part of employees’ professional development. The below message is sent on behalf of Mikayla Hunter, Founding President, Queer & Trans Graduate Student Group, PhD Candidate, Community Health Sciences, University of Manitoba Good morning, Lavender Graduation<https://lavendergraduationlegacyproject.org/about-us/> is an annual ceremony conducted on numerous campuses to honor queer and trans students to acknowledge their achievements and contributions as they graduate their degrees. The Lavender Graduation Ceremony was created by Dr. Ronni Sanlo, a lesbian who was denied the opportunity to attend the graduations of her children because of her sexual orientation. In response, she organized the first Lavender Graduation ceremony at the University of Michigan in 1995. Since 1995, Lavender Graduation ceremonies have happened across North America, most predominantly in the United States. In 2018, McGill University made history when it became the first post-secondary institution outside of the United States to host a Lavender Graduation. Since 2024, the Queer & Trans Graduate Student Group has hosted a Lavender Graduation ceremony at the University of Manitoba. At this ceremony, grads from all post-secondary institutions in Manitoba who are 2SLGBTQIA+ are welcome to attend and be celebrated for their accomplishments. Students who have graduated in the Fall 2025/Spring 2026 or will be graduating in Summer 2026/Fall 2026 are welcome to be a graduate this ceremony. This ceremony is symbolic in nature and no parchments are conferred. I would greatly appreciate if you could share this information with students in your faculty. If you're still making plans for the upcoming week/Spring Break, consider visiting Daniel Gowryluk, Museum Coordinator, at one of his stops across the city! Daniel will be sharing his expertise and enthusiasm for the Ed Leith Cretaceous Menagerie at the following stops throughout the week: YWG Airport: Saturday March 28-Monday March 30th at the community table on the departures floor. Service Disruption -St. John's College Sidewalk closure - Ongoing

Good Morning, Please see below notice on behalf of Kim Dandewich. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Building: St; John’s College sidewalk Location: Sidewalk along east side of St. John’s College Residence Timeframe: Monday March 23 – ongoing to project completion Category: Sidewalk Closure Overview: Please be advised that the sidewalk on the east side of St John’s College Residence will remain closed for the duration of the project to allow for construction activity (see map). Access to Wallace Building and Parking Lots Q/K is available through the greenspace between St. John’s College and St. Paul’s College or via the Wallace tunnel, which can be accessed indoors through the Allen Building and Parker Building. Access to St John’s College and St. John’s College Residence will not be affected. Please plan accordingly and allow additional time for the detour. Barricades and safety signage will be clearly posted to safely direct cyclists and pedestrians as required. Caution should be taken at all times during construction. Your patience and cooperation to ensure everyone’s safety is appreciated.
