MNN Scientific Meeting
Dear Neuroscience Community,
Since 2010, the Manitoba Neuroscience Network (MNN) has held several
scientific meetings consisting of neuroscience faculty and trainees. These
gatherings have been received with tremendous enthusiasm, attracting around
150 attendees each year. We are pleased to build on this success by holding
a sixth scientific meeting in 2016.
The 2016 meeting content will center on dementia. There will be
participation by Manitoba principal investigators and an invited speaker.
There will also be a poster competition for graduate students and
postdoctoral fellows to showcase the research done in neuroscience labs in
the region.
Please register for the event and maximize your awareness of the research
quality and opportunities in your community in an atmosphere designed to
encourage social interaction.
The DEADLINE for abstract submission is May 13st, 2016. Please follow the

Dear colleagues,
To mark Brain Awareness Week 2016, the MNN will be hosting Canada Excellence
Research Chair Dr. Oliver Ernst from the University of Toronto on March 14
and 15. Dr. Ernst is a world leader in the study of the structure and
function of G protein-coupled receptors, particularly rhodopsin. Additional
information about his research and publications can be found on his website:
http://biochemistry.utoronto.ca/person/oliver-p-ernst/.
Details of his scientific and public talks will be sent out in the next
couple of weeks, but at present, we would like to finalize his itinerary by
scheduling meetings with MNN researchers. To broaden the scope of his
visit, we have divided up his time as follows:
Monday, March 14 - Fort Garry campus. Dr. Ernst will spend the entire day
at Fort Garry and will be available for meetings from approximately 10 am -
4 pm. Meetings will be 30-45 minutes and MNN members will be given
priority. We are also looking for someone (student or postdoc) who would be
willing to escort Dr. Ernst to his different meetings around the campus that
day. This is a great opportunity to interact with a world-renowned
researcher, and we will also give you a $25 Starbucks gift card! Please
contact us at the addresses below if you are interested.
Tuesday, March 15 - Bannatyne campus. MNN members at Bannatyne (and St. B)
are welcome to request meetings with Dr. Ernst at the Bannatyne campus from
9 am - 4 pm.
Please respond ASAP to Kae Normandeau (Kaeleen.Normandeau(a)umanitoba.ca or
outreach(a)manitobaneuroscience.ca ) to indicate that you are interested in
meeting with Dr. Ernst. Thank you for your continued support of the MNN.
Best wishes, Sari

Hello everyone,
Brain Awareness Week 2016 is fast approaching, and in the next several weeks
you will be hearing more about the outreach events that MNN will be hosting
to mark the occasion. They include our Café Scientifique on multiple
sclerosis (March 7), a visit from CERC chair Dr. Oliver Ernst from the
University of Toronto (March 14 and 15), and our 2nd annual Winnipeg Brain
Bee, which will be held Saturday, March 12. We have a wonderful core of
Brain Bee volunteers who will be returning this year, but I am looking for
one faculty member (or postdoc) who would be willing to host a laboratory
demonstration for the competitors that day. We already have neuroanatomy
and neurophysiology demos planned, and we would like to have one more demo
in another area. It could be microscopy, imaging, something clinical, or
something else entirely. Here are the details:
Date: Saturday, March 12, 1-3 pm
Time commitment: 2 hours (not including set-up time)
How it will work: The students and teachers will be split into 3 groups and
rotate through the different demos. We expect that there will be 8-9 people
in each group. Each demo will be 30-40 minutes in length. Ideally, we
would like to have something that the students can actively participate in
(hands-on), but if you would prefer to simply have them observe, thats fine
too.
Caveats: NO live animals.
The demo must take place at the U of M
Bannatyne campus/HSC.
If you are interested in taking part, please respond as soon as possible.
Thank you for your continued support of the MNN and our outreach programs.
Best wishes,
Sari S. Hannila, PhD
Director of Outreach

The Manitoba Neuroscience Network (MNN) is your local chapter of the Society
for Neuroscience and is committed to enabling neuroscience networking,
outreach and training opportunities. MNN-driven activities in 2015 included
visiting speakers, annual MNN symposium, Manitoba Brain Bee, Canada
Excellence Research Chair public lecture series, neuroscience Café
Scientifiques, awards for the Manitoba Schools Science Symposium and BSc
(Med) program, and our Art of Neuroscience program. Exciting expansion of
these activities and new initiatives are planned for 2016.
The MNN is typically able to cover NETWORKING expenses related to our
speaker series by partnering with St. Boniface Hospital Research and the
Health Sciences Centre Research Department, and in part by using sponsorship
and registration revenues from the annual symposium.
In contrast, MNN OUTREACH efforts rely heavily on annual membership dues so
it is important that we maximize our membership base each year.
You are receiving this message because you were a 2015 member or because we
have identified you as someone who may benefit from being a member. The
membership year is January through December, 2016, and you are encouraged to
apply or renew. Besides supporting the activities of your local SFN
Chapter, you will also be eligible for discounted registration rates for the
MNN 2016 symposium in June ( <http://www.sbrc.ca/mnn2016>
www.sbrc.ca/mnn2016).
WHAT ARE THE MEMBERSHIP DUES AND HOW CAN I APPLY OR RENEW?
- Faculty, Professionals:
$60.00
- Postdocs, Residents, Technicians, Research Associates:
$30.00
- Students and Retirees:
$15.00
- All-inclusive Lab Rate:
$100.00
Please visit <http://sfn-manitoba.ca/application/>
http://sfn-manitoba.ca/application/ to join or renew. Fees can be paid by
credit card, cheque or University of Manitoba FOP.
Thank you very much!
