Nick Shepel Student Travel Award
Competition deadline: Friday April 29th, 2016 - 5:00 pm
The Nick Shepel Student Travel Award was established by the Division of Neurodegenerative Disorders, St. Boniface Hospital Albrechtsen Research Centre to honor Nick Shepel who was an outstanding researcher, friend and leader. Nick was a true inspiration to his lab partners and brought fire, humor, and a desire to always do better. His insistence to always try better will have a permanent effect on his lab mates. Nick led by example and taught that detailed preparation and execution of experiments ensured reliable results.

The Manitoba Neuroscience Network (MNN) is pleased to announce establishment
of The NANCY HETTIE CLARK TRAINEE TRAVEL AWARDS and the VIKTOR HAVLICEK
MEMORIAL NEUROSCIENCE LECTURESHIP. These are new awards for neuroscientists
affiliated with the University of Manitoba. The first application deadline
will be May 1, 2017. More details will be made available well before then.
The estates of Nancy Hettie Clark and Dr. Viktor Havlicek each made generous
contributions to the University of Manitoba (Department of Physiology) in
the 1980's. In both cases, funds were intended to promote the
neurosciences. The legacies and unspent annual allocations have accumulated
to substantial values, prompting the MNN and Department of Physiology and
Pathophysiology to create clear terms of reference for awards that respect
the initial intent of the contributions.
Capital reserve funds have been created, and annual interest will be used to
fund each new award. The Nancy Hettie Clark Trainee Travel Award fund is
intended to allow two (2) annual trainee travel awards of $700 each. The
Viktor Havlicek Memorial Neuroscience Lectureship fund is intended to allow
one (1) biannual lectureship award of $3000, used to bring an
internationally-renowned neuroscientist to Winnipeg. Both awards will have
the same deadline (May 1, starting 2017) and recipients will be selected by
the Neurosciences Awards committee, chaired by the MNN (Winnipeg Chapter,
Society for Neuroscience) President. Detailed terms of reference are
attached.
The MNN thanks the University of Manitoba's College of Medicine (Dr. Ed
Kroeger) and Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology (Drs. Peter
Cattini and Larry Jordan) for helping to ensure that these awards promote
excellence in the neurosciences across all faculties at the University of
Manitoba.

MNN Visiting Speaker - Dr. Michael Salter
Friday, April 15th, 2016
Michael Salter, PhD
<http://www.sickkids.ca/AboutSickKids/Directory/People/S/Michael-Salter.html

Chief of Research, The Hospital for Sick Children Senior; Scientist -
Program in Neurosciences & Mental Health;
Professor of Physiology, University of Toronto
1) Scientific Lecture: From receptors to pain: The Molecular dynamics of
pain
12:00 Noon | Theatre C, Bannatyne Campus
----------------------------------------------------------------------
2) Trainee Lunch - All neuroscience-related trainees (including students,
postdoctoral fellows & research associates) are invited to attend!)
1:00 PM | Room SR415, Kleysen Institute for Advanced Medicine
Dr. Salter's main research focus is on synaptic physiology, in particular in
relation to pain, and he has done groundbreaking work that has led to new
paradigms about neuroplasticity and about how synaptic transmission in the
central nervous system is regulated by biochemical processes within neurons
and by glial-neuronal interactions. His discoveries have broad implications
for the control of cell-cell communication throughout the nervous system and
his work has regularly appeared in elite journals including Nature, Science,
Cell, Nature Medicine and Neuron. Dr. Salter has a broad interest in
neuroscience and his work relevant to learning and memory, stroke-induced
neuron death, epilepsy and schizophrenia. As a distinct line of research, he
and his collaborators reported in Cell in 2006 their discovery of a
previously unsuspected role for sensory neurons in the pathogenesis of
diabetes and in the control of glucose homeostasis.
