*** For grad students only! ***
Hello students,
The Neurotalks career day is this Thursday, May 3rd, and the undergraduate
student organizers from Let's Talk Science have once again asked for our
help. They are looking for graduate students who would be willing to take
small groups of high schools students on tours of the Bannatyne campus
before the day's activities begin.
They are looking for a minimum of 2 tour guides, and the tours will take
place from 8:15-8:45 am. All you have to do is take them around to the
various buildings and possibly give them a glimpse of your lab.
Please send me an email ASAP if you are interested. As always, thank you
very much for your help.
Best wishes, Sari

Hello everyone,
We have received a request for a speaker from an elementary school teacher
at Dalhousie School (please see her email below). She is looking for
someone who can speak about the adaptations that occur in the CNS of
visually-impaired and hearing-impaired individuals. From our perspective,
this could include anything from structural/anatomical differences, to
functional neuroimaging, to psychology and behaviour. The date has not been
determined, but if you are interested in speaking to these students, please
send an email to Kae Normandeau at your earliest convenience:
kae.normandeau(a)umanitoba.ca
Please do not contact the teacher directly at this time, as Kae has to keep
track of all speaking engagements that are arranged through the MNN Speakers
Bureau.
Thank you very much for considering this request.
Best wishes, Sari

Subject: requesting speaker about brain difference between deaf/hearing and
blind/seeing people
Hi Kaeleen,
I'm a Grade 4 teacher at Dalhousie School. We are currently working on
inquiry projects, and two of my students are exploring brain differences
between deaf/hearing people and blind/seeing people. Do you have anyone who
might be willing to speak to them? I'm not sure what this would look
like.ideally for us, the person would come out to Dalhousie School (near the
south campus of the U of M). Thanks!

o Application category (PhD student or postdoctoral fellow) and your start
date in that position
o The conference title, location and dates
o Type of presentation (e.g. poster or oral)
o The importance of the meeting and significance for career development

B I O
Sachin Katyal received his B.Sc. (Biochemistry) from the University of
Alberta and received his Ph.D. (Oncology) at the Cross Cancer Institute and
the University of Alberta. His post-doctoral training, at St. Jude
Childrens Research Hospital, in the area of DNA damage and repair in
neurodevelopment and neuro-oncology was done in the lab of Dr. Peter
McKinnon; work that led to publications in internationally-renowned journals
such as Nature, Nature Neuroscience and EMBO J. In 2013, Dr. Katyal began
his independent academic research position at the University of Manitoba and
CancerCare Manitoba where he is an Assistant Professor within the Department
of Pharmacology and Therapeutics (D-PT) and, a Senior Scientist within the
Research Institute of Oncology and Hematology (RIOH). Dr. Katyals
research is CIHR- and TFRI-funded; he is the recipient of the CIHR Institute
of Cancer Research 2014 Early Career Award in Cancer Research, a CIHR New
Investigator award and most recently a TFRI New Investigator Award to
counteract resistant Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM). He serves on several
scientific review committees for international academic journals and grant
review panels. Sachin has also established industrial partnerships, which
have facilitated the development of innovative technology and methodology to
accelerate his DNA damage repair research program. These were instrumental
for his recently-funded CFI infrastructure award to develop a novel
high-throughput genotoxicity and drug screening facility to understand and
identify new therapies against brain tumours and leukemia. Sachin is also
actively involved in trainee development, mentorship and career progression
through various University-wide initiatives, courses and workshops.
L E A R N I N G O B J E C T I V E S
1. To understand the function of DNA damage repair pathways during
neurodevelopment.
2. To identify biochemical (DNA repair) mechanisms that cancerous cells
use to mitigate the effectiveness of chemotherapeutics in neural tumours.
3. To describe new high-throughput DNA damage analysis methodology.
4. To functionalize this methodology into a novel drug screening and
DNA damage analysis platform to interrogate tumour chemoresistance and to
develop personalized quick-to-clinic anti-GBM treatments via drug
repurposing studies.

Hello students,
I hope you all had an enjoyable long weekend. I am writing to ask for
volunteers to help with the Neurotalks career day for high school students
that we are organizing in conjunction with the undergraduate students from
Let's Talk Science at Fort Garry. Neurotalks will be held Thursday, May 3rd
at the Bannatyne campus.
I am looking for 2 students to participate in a career panel that will take
place from roughly 3:15-3:45 pm that afternoon. You will be part of a group
of 7 people that includes faculty members and medical residents, and you
will answer questions from the high school students about university and
graduate school. I especially encourage those of you who went to U of M to
take part, as many of these students will likely be applying to come here
and will be interested in learning more about what U of M is like.
Please let me know ASAP if you are interested and thank you very much for
helping us with this event.
Best wishes, Sari
