Dear friends of the UMIH, Please join us for a full agenda of exciting events covering a wide range of topics, several in collaboration with UMIH’s partners. We begin today, Monday, October 20th, with another of our Brown Bag Lunch Series, on “Understanding Mediums: The Extensions of Spirit,” at 1pm, 409 Tier. This is a presentation by Catherine van Reenen, doctoral candidate in the Department of Religion and one of UMIH’s graduate fellows. Based on a chapter of her thesis, this presentation will highlight conceptual affinities between the media theory of Marshall McLuhan and the 'medium theory' of a group of psychical researchers who focused on a phenomenon known as 'teleplasm', a mysterious substance alleged to ooze from the orifices of entranced mediums. -Workshop: “AI and Artmaking” Erika Jean Lincoln, -Organized by Creative Manitoba and Mentoring Artists for Women’s Art (MAWA), supported by UMIH -Date: October 22, 7- 8:30pm, online, information available at https://creativemanitoba.ca/event/ai-and-artmaking/#tribe-tickets__tickets-… This online Boot Camp will break down artificial intelligence (AI) into bite-sized pieces that are easy to understand. It will explore the gateways and barriers that AI employs in image and sound generation, and generative text in performance and writing. -UMIH Guest Lecture Series: “Strangely Friends. A History of Cuban-Canadian Encounters” Karen Dubinsky (Queen’s University)  Date: Thursday, October 23rd, 2:30pm, 409 Tier In this presentation, Karen Dubinsky will discuss her new book Strangely Friends, which focuses on the often-neglected network of personal and cultural connections between Cuban and Canadians since the early days of the Cuban revolution. It addresses the stories of many Canadians, from teachers and activists, attracted to Cuban a well as of Cubans drawn to Canada. In this presentation, Mira Sucharov, Professor of Political Science at Carleton University, will discuss the role of the scholar-activist as researcher in the context of the politics of Israel/Palestine. This event is possible due to the support of the Newcombe Family Foundation -“Refusing to Harness a River: A Study of Drylands Farmers Resisting Irrigation in Mid-20th Century Saskatchewan. Shannon Stunden Bower (University of Alberta) Thursday, October 30th, 1-2:30pm, 108 St. John’s College This presentation will focus on dryland farmers from Saskatchewan’s Outlook-Broderick area in their efforts to resist the Saskatchewan government’s attempts to compel them to irrigate. This event, organized by the Centre for Human Rights Research, is also supported by the UMIH’s Research Cluster Food Matters. This one-day, mixed-format symposium will be held on November 18th, 409 Tier, beginning at noon and with the keynote address delivered via Zoom at 2:30pm by Prof. Rostyslav Radyshevskyi (Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv). We have several confirmed participants already and the program will be announced soon. The Institute for Humanities at the University of Manitoba invites proposals for papers and panel presentations for the international conference Identity in Motion: Literary Representations of Refugees, Exiles, and Immigrants. This conference seeks to explore the diverse literary portrayals of displacement, migration, exile, and the refugee experience across genres, languages, and cultures. We welcome interdisciplinary approaches, including but not limited to literary studies, cultural studies, history, and sociology. The format for this conference is hybrid (in person/Zoom). Dear friends of UMIH, With the semester now in full motion, in this newsletter I would like to bring to your attention some exciting events and opportunities-see attached posters for further information: -Indigenous Peoples and the Lula Administration: The Role of the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples in Brazil Dr. Eloy Terena, Vice-Minister of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil Wednesday October 1st, 2:30 pm, 108 St. John's College A member of the Terena Indigenous people in Brazil, Dr. Terena is a lawyer and the Vice-Minister of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil. He holds doctoral degrees in Law and Anthropology, and a post-doctoral degree in Social Science (École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, France). He has worked as the general counsel for the Association of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (APIB) as well as in the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the International Criminal Court. Dr. Terena recently received Brazil's most prestigious award, the Order of Rio Branco, for his work in establishing the first Ministry of Indigenous Peoples in Brazil's history. Dr. Shiri Pasternak is Associate Professor of Criminology at Toronto Metropolitan University. She is the author of Grounded Authority: The Algonquins of Barriere Lake Against the State (2017), and co-editor of Disarm, Defund, Dismantle: Police Abolition in Canada (2022). Her talk will take us through the resource hinterlands of hard rock northern Ontario mining, Maritime monopoly, the Family Compact, and NWT extraction to show how Canada’s colonial policies carved out a system of economic rent structured on Indigenous dispossession and global networks of capital. UMIH welcomes applications for 2025-26

Dear Friends of UMIH, Do you have a humanities topic you would like to explore with colleagues here at U of M? Are you a humanities graduate student in search of both funding and professionalization opportunities? Do you know humanities researchers who are not affiliated with the U of M but who would benefit from support from UMIH in the academic year ahead? April is application season at UMIH and we’d be glad for your help spreading the word about the following opportunities. Research Clusters Research clusters are groups of faculty and graduate students from different departments and disciplines with shared research interests. Successful groups are awarded up to $5,000 (subject to budgetary approval) annually. Goals for Research Clusters include: facilitating meaningful dialogue on humanities-related themes across disciplinary boundaries and fostering and promoting interdisciplinary research in the humanities. Graduate Student Fellows We are delighted to welcome applications for the UMIH Graduate Fellowship. This an annual fellowship valued at up to $5,000 (subject to budgetary approval). The UMIH Graduate Fellowship will be offered to a UM graduate student who is enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Graduate Studies and is conducting research in the humanities. Applicants need to have achieved a minimum degree GPA of 3.5 (or equivalent) based on the previous 60 credit hours of study. While preference will be given to students at a late stage of their PhD program, all graduate students in the humanities at UM are welcome to apply. The application deadline is April 30, 2025. Affiliates work on a research project outlined in their application and present a colloquium on their research during or soon after their affiliation. These positions are non-stipendiary. Research affiliates may receive up to $3,000 (subject to budgetary approval) to support their research. Applications are welcome from: post-doctoral fellows, independent scholars, graduate students enrolled in the program generally considered to be the highest in their field (e.g. PhD, LLM, MFA), and individuals in full-time university appointments who wish to spend all or part of a sabbatical leave in Manitoba. Experiential Teaching and Learning in Humanities Classrooms: A Roundtable Conversation Tuesday March 25; 2:30 – 3:30PM; Hybrid event: Tier 307 + on Zoom Co-hosted by UMIH and The Office of Experiential Learning (CATL) Our speakers— Dr. Danielle Dubois (Religion), Dr. Christine Stewart (Women’s and Gender Studies), and Dr. David Watt (English, Theatre, Film & Media) — will share examples of experiential teaching and learning in the Faculty of Arts. Join us to get inspiration and advice on how you can bring an experiential approach to your teaching. All are welcome.
