Dear Friends of UMIH, We have a lot to share with you about upcoming UMIH programming. Please mark your calendars and join us at one or more of the following events. “Impersonal Love: Theorizing Antisocial Maternity in the Wake of Leo Bersani” A Presentation by Dr. Rachel Shields (McMaster University / UMIH Research Affiliate) Thursday February 27; 2:30- 4:00PM; Tier 409 In this talk, Dr. Shields will explore connections between Leo Bersani's queer theory and views on motherhood that resist conventional pressures of “maternal love.” Please attend to learn from Dr. Shields as she explores critiques of modern motherhood and analyzes both literary works and films that showcase alternative, “antisocial” maternal approaches. All are welcome. “Dear Alice: Writing and Stitching with Archival Materials” A Free Two-Part Hands-On Workshop with CCWOC Writer-in-Residence Dr. Sonja Boon Monday March 3; 2:30- 4:00PM; UM Library’s Archives & Special Collections Monday March 17; 2:30- 4:00PM; Tier 409 This two-part workshop, co-hosted by CCWOC and UMIH, brings archival materials, found poetry, and textile art into conversation with one another. The first session, to take place in UM Library’s Archives & Special Collections, will introduce participants to power, politics, and possibilities in the archives, while the second session, in Tier 409, will introduce found poetry as a mode of inquiry and creative exploration. Participants will create individual blocks of a quilt that will be stitched together by Sonja Boon. All are welcome. “Bleeding Hearts: Missions, Philanthropy, Gender, and Indigenous Peoples in Saskatchewan, 1890-1920” A Presentation by Karen Brglez (Department of History / UMIH Graduate Fellow) Thursday March 6; 2:30- 4:00PM; Tier 409 Sentimentality was at the core of female missionary efforts in Saskatchewan. This presentation explores the strategic use of sentimental rhetoric by female missionaries who worked in the Canadian Indian Residential School System and on First Nations reserves during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. All are welcome. A UMIH Crafternoon: Book Binding for Beginners Thursday March 13; 2:30- 4:00PM; Tier 409 Our final Crafternoon of 2024-2025 will introduce you to the basics of book binding. Focusing on coptic stitch, we’ll explore methods for creating, collating, and stitching a booklet of blank paper for you to take home and use after the workshop. No registration required; no experience required. All materials and instruction ARE provided. Space is limited; please arrive no later than 2:40. All are welcome. The UMIH invites you to attend the following events. One of them will share the knowledge of a graduate student from the Faculty of Arts while the other is designed to support graduate students’ professional development. Tipācimowinan: Ahki sigwa keteyak / Stories: land and the long-ago ones A Presentation by Carla Kennedy (Indigenous Studies / UMIH Graduate Fellow) Thursday February 13; 2:30- 4:00PM; On Zoom. Anishinaabeg perspectives encompass a holistic understanding of relationships between mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional aspects of self, alongside links between human and more-than-human relations over multiple generations. In this talk, Carla Kennedy will share stories from her grandmother’s teachings on elements of Indigenous knowledge and applied sciences, stories told while checking snares for rabbits in the bush that surrounds the Qu’Appelle valley. These stories and life experiences are embedded in Carla’s research, which integrates Indigenous methods with Drone technology. Please email umih(a)umanitoba.ca for the Zoom link. Sweaty Palms and Breathlessness: Preparing for Stressful Presentations A Free Skills Workshop with Dr. Sonja Boon Tuesday February 18; 2:30-4:00PM; On Zoom This online session, co-organized by CCWOC and UMIH and led by Writer-in-Residence Dr. Sonja Boon, is designed to prepare graduate students for public events: conferences, thesis defenses, interviews, and more. While created with graduate students in mind, this workshop is open to all members of the UM Community. All are welcome. Book Launch featuring UMIH Research Affiliate Dr. Youcef Soufi Thursday February 6; 2:30 - 4:00 PM; Tier 409 Please join us to celebrate the launch of Homegrown Radicals: A Story of State Violence, Islamophobia, and Jihad in the Post-9/11 World (NYU Press). At this event, Dr. Soufi will share an overview and reading from his book. The event will include a moderated discussion. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome. Riffing on Tariffs: Trump, Trade Wars, and the Politics of Uncertainty/Chaos Friday February 7; 1:00 - 2:30 PM; St. John’s College, Room 108 A roundtable moderated by Dr. David Churchill and featuring Dr. Sarah Elvins, Dr. Jordan Howell, Dr. Len Kuffert, and Dr. Jorge Nállim Are you wondering about possible impacts of the recent US tariffs on Canadian goods? Has anything like this ever happened before? Join us for a roundtable discussion about current and past tariff wars in North and South America. Four UM History profs will talk about historical contexts for the events of the past week. Come with your questions! Prairie Abolition: Here and Now Friday February 7 (Fort Gary Campus) – Saturday February 8 (WestEnd Commons) A colloquium on anticolonial abolition across the prairies This two-day colloquium, hosted by the Prairie Abolition Research Cluster, focuses on sharing what we currently already know, feel, have, and are doing to create anticolonial and more just futures here and now. Panels will feature guest speakers to help facilitate discussion with all in attendance. Students, staff, faculty, and community member are invited to join and share. Small Things: Cross-Stitch Provocations Monday, February 10 and Monday, February 24; 2:30 - 4:00 PM; Tier 409 In partnership with the Centre for Creative Writing and Oral Culture, the UMIH invites you to attend a pair of hands-on workshops led by CCWOC Writer-in-Residence Dr. Sonja Boon. In the course of two gatherings, participants will learn about cross-stitch histories and activisms, create their own cross-stitch pieces, and then place them in public locations across campus. All materials will be supplied. No experience with cross-stitch required; no need to register. All are welcome to join us to explore the creative and craftivist potential of a needle and thread.
